Paddy Pimblett makes bold Ilia Topuria claim: ‘I reckon I proper hurt him'
Paddy Pimblett has vowed he would 'proper hurt' Ilia Topuria, if the UFC stars were to settle their longtime grudge.
Pimblett and Topuria were involved in a backstage altercation ahead of UFC London in 2022, where 'Paddy The Baddy' threw a bottle of hand sanitiser at the Spanish-Georgian, who was confronting the Scouser over allegedly anti-Georgian comments on social media.
At the ensuing Fight Night, Pimblett submitted Rodrigo Vargas, and Topuria knocked out Jai Herbert. The latter bout saw Topuria venture up to lightweight, Pimblett's division, though he soon returned to featherweight, where he won the title in 2024.
Now, however, Topuria is back at 155lb, having vacated the 145lb title in February. 'El Matador' is preparing to face former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for the vacant belt on 28 June, while Pimblett is likely one win away from a title shot.
As such, Pimblett vs Topuria is finally a realistic possibility again, and the Liverpudlian discussed that match-up while talking to compatriot Tom Aspinall, the interim UFC heavyweight champion.
'If Ilia wins and says he wants to fight me, the UFC will make that fight, because they know it's a money fight,' Pimblett said on Aspinall's YouTube channel. 'That's one of those fights, there'll be a f*****g world press tour like [Conor] McGregor vs [Jose] Aldo.
'I know I'd beat him. Funny, because I get laughed at for it, but I know I beat him. We've already talked about gameplans to beat him, and I know how to beat him.
'No one goes for his weaknesses when he fights them. Everyone [has] just decided to have a boxing match with him. I'm not going to come out and have a boxing match with him; I'm going to beat him with my all-around MMA game.
'As I said, I know I'd beat him up, and I reckon I proper hurt him and just shut everyone up even more – like I love to do.'
Topuria, 28, is unbeaten as a professional, while Pimblett has three losses to his name but none in the UFC; since debuting in the promotion in 2021, the 30-year-old has gone 7-0.
Last time out, in April, Paddy The Baddy dominated and stopped Michael Chandler, a former UFC lightweight title challenger who previously held the Bellator belt three times.
Meanwhile, Topuria will enter the UFC 317 main event on the back of two straight knockouts of featherweight greats. In February 2024, he stopped Alexander Volkanovski to take the title from the long-reigning champion; then, in October, he scored the same result against former title holder Max Holloway, retaining the gold in the process.

How far the Reds will cast their net is unknown at this stage but it is clear they are looking to start with one club and the La Liga outfit, who finished 13th last season, are of serious interest. Edwards' involvement comes more than a year after he returned to Anfield. The former sporting director came back as chief executive officer of football, linking up with the club's current sporting director Richard Hughes. "It was vital for me that, if I did return, it had to be with renewed vigour and energy. In practice, this means having fresh challenges and opportunities," Edwards said in 2024 when his return was confirmed "As such, one of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club, growing this area of their organisation. Chelsea Club World Cup opener TV figures released after stadium for win over LAFC was less than a third full
The viewing figures for Chelsea 's Club World Cup opener against MLS side LAFC have now been released, and it makes for somewhat more encouraging reading than the in-ground attendance numbers. The Blues got their campaign in the United States up and running with a fairly routine 2-0 win over LAFC - featuring former Premier League regulars Olivier Giroud and Hugo Lloris. Pedro Neto scored a stunning opener in the first half, before Enzo Fernandez made sure of the points and put away any hopes of a fight back late on. Yet one of the biggest talking points from the game was the fact that the 71,000-seater Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, appeared to be less than half full, in a bitter blow to FIFA. However, with every single game shown for free on DAZN, and Channel 5 having the rights to select fixtures, Monday night's victory for the Blues was at least better received back home. Figures published now show that there was an average audience of 1.4million for the game on 5, with 283,000 also tuning in for Boca Juniors draw with Benfica, which kicked off three hours later at 11pm. As such, president of Paramount International Advertising Sales Lee Sears has described the reception of the Blues match as 'a standout moment'. 'Last night's FIFA Club World Cup match was a standout moment for 5, driving big numbers including new and hard to reach younger audiences to the channel,' Sears stated. 'It's a clear example of how premium live sport can outperform our channel average and deliver real value to both viewers and advertisers.' With Atlanta United's home ground able to host over 70,000 fans, it was even more apparent from the broadcast pictures how few had bought tickets for the game. LAFC had been backed by strong and vocal support for the game, though the cross-country trip to Georgia is naturally somewhat more forgiving than the trip across the Atlantic for Chelsea fans. Reports suggest only 22,127 fans were actually at the game, which is being staged after the end of the European season. Ticket prices were even slashed ahead of kick-off in a bid to entice football fans into attending, but seemingly to no avail. While the game in Atlanta saw a surprising number of empty seats, Boca Juniors' clash with Benfica looked to almost be a home game for the Argentinian side, with the stands practically bouncing with supporters in encouraging scenes for FIFA. In the wake of Monday evening's fixtures, though, LaLiga president Javier Tebas launched a scathing attack on the competition, claiming he now aims to 'eliminate' future Club World Cups. Speaking at a LaLiga event, Tebas said: 'My goal is to ensure there are no more Club World Cups, that's very clear.' Asked if improvements could be made for future editions, he said there were 'no dates' in the footballing calendar left and the competition should be 'eliminated'. 'There are no dates,' the 62-year-old said. 'There's no need for yet another competition that moves money to a sector of clubs and players and comes from somewhere. 'There's no more money here; we have to maintain the ecosystem and eliminate it. 'Keep it as it was before, which was a weekend. There's no way, neither in terms of dates, nor economics, nor maintaining the sustainability of football.' The LaLiga president admitted he had watched 25 minutes of Chelsea's 2-0 win over Los Angeles but criticised the fixture for looking like 'a preseason friendly', adding 'I didn't see any intensity'.

Daniel Levy breaks silence on Ange Postecoglou sacking - as Tottenham chairman reveals why he appointed Thomas Frank
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has left Thomas Frank in little doubt about what he expects with a warning that one Europa League trophy is simply not enough. Levy made it clear he craves winning the Premier League and Champions League having sacked Ange Postecoglou just 16 days after leading Spurs to their first trophy for 17 years. He also expects to see a successful Spurs team, beating opponents in a fashion fit for their stylish home. 'There's no point having a wonderful stadium if you don't have a wonderful team, winning,' said Levy. 'Failure is not an option. The desire is to succeed and because it's so difficult I want to succeed even more. 'We've won a European trophy. It's not enough. It's what we haven't done that's more important. 'We need to win the league. We want to win the Premier League. We want to win the Champions League. We want to win.' Levy spoke alongside new chief executive Vinai Venkatesham on the club's in-house media channel about the pressure of the long wait for trophies and the decision to sack Postecoglou, who ended it but presided over a dreadful Premier League campaign last season, losing 22 of 38 games and finishing 17th. 'I'm very grateful to Ange,' said the Spurs chairman. 'I don't regret appointing Ange. 'In his first season we finished fifth and in our second season we were over the moon to win a trophy, but we need to compete in all competitions, and we felt that we needed a change. 'I've an excellent relationship with him. He's always going to be part of our history. Him and his family are always welcome back. 'It was a collective decision, it wasn't my decision, we do everything together. Emotionally it was difficult but we believe we've made the right decision for the club.' Venkatesham explained technical director Johan Lange had analysed more than 30 candidates for the job, delivered a short list and Brentford boss Frank emerged as 'absolutely our number one candidate' and 'an outstanding developer of young players'. On the fresh start, Levy added: 'The things that stood out to me with Thomas, he is clearly highly intelligent, great communicator, super human being, plus all the other technical aspects which are obviously really important.'
