Three Australians face death penalty for Bali villa murder; two arrested after fleeing to Singapore
The suspects — Tupou Pasa Midolmore, 37, Coskun Mevlut, 23, and Darcy Francesco Jenson, 37 — were presented to the media on Thursday, handcuffed and dressed in orange prison uniforms and balaclavas, according to a report published in the Jakarta Globe today.
'This was a carefully planned, organised attack — not a spontaneous act,' said Bali Police Chief Inspector General Daniel Adityajaya, describing the shooting as a professional operation carried out with clear intent.
The incident took place on June 14 at Villa Casa Santisya in Badung, where the trio allegedly arrived on two motorbikes, attacked the victims, and escaped in separate vehicles.
The suspects fled Bali through multiple provinces, eventually reaching Sidoarjo in East Java before taking a bus to Jakarta; police say they planned to flee the country via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

One suspect was arrested in Jakarta, while the other two were apprehended in Singapore with the help of local authorities.
The shooting claimed the life of Zivan Radmanovic, 32, and left 34-year-old Sanar Ghanim hospitalised with serious injuries, both of whom are Australian nationals.
According to police, Jenson masterminded the operation, securing accommodation, arranging transport, purchasing a hammer to break into the villa, and preparing travel documents for their escape.
Midolmore and Mevlut are alleged to have carried out the assault, with investigators saying the men posed as motorbike taxi riders by wearing ride-hailing service jackets to approach the villa without raising suspicion.
While the investigation has advanced, police have yet to determine the motive behind the attack and are continuing to gather evidence.
The trio face charges under Article 340 of Indonesia's Criminal Code for premeditated murder, and under the firearms law for illegal possession of firearms, both of which carry severe penalties.
'Our investigation is ongoing, and we do not rule out the possibility of additional suspects being involved,' said Daniel.

Riverside County deputies shoot allegedly armed motorcyclist after foot pursuit in Beaumont
Riverside County Sheriff's Department deputies shot and wounded a man who allegedly had a gun following a pursuit in Beaumont on Tuesday. Deputies made contact with the suspect, who has not yet been identified, at around 6:40 p.m. on the side of the road near Redlands Boulevard and San Timoteo Canyone Road, according to a news release from the department. "When asked if he had any weapons, the male became uncooperative and ran toward a residence in the area," the release said. "The deputy chased the male, giving him commands to stop and put his hands up." It was then that deputies claim the man ran towards a home in the area, prompting a brief foot pursuit. At some point, the man allegedly produced a firearm, which resulted in deputies opening fire and striking the suspect. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he is said to be in critical condition, the release noted. No other injuries were reported in the incident and RSO says that the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave per department policy. NYPD officer killed in Manhattan office shooting to be laid to rest
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City police officer who was among the four people shot and killed by a gunman during a rampage at a Manhattan office tower will be laid to rest Thursday. Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was fatally shot Monday in a midtown building housing the National Football League's headquarters. A security guard, real estate firm employee and investment firm executive were also killed. The gunman also shot and wounded a fifth victim, an NFL employee, before killing himself. Islam's funeral will take place at Parkchester Jame Masjid Funeral Home in the Bronx. There will be separate viewings for men, women and close friends and family, followed by a prayer service. He will then be buried at a cemetery in Totowa, New Jersey. Islam was the gunman's first victim when he strode into the lobby of the Park Avenue office tower with an AR-15-style rifle at around 6:30 p.m. and immediately opened fire. Islam had been working a department-approved private security detail in uniform at the time. An immigrant from Bangladesh, Islam had worked his way up the nation's largest police force, serving as a school safety agent before becoming a patrol officer less than four years ago. He was assigned to a precinct in the Bronx, the city borough where he lived with his wife and two young sons. The couple is also expecting the birth of their third child soon. 'He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm's way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,' Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. 'He died as he lived. A hero.' Another victim, Julia Hyman, was buried following an emotional service Wednesday at a Manhattan synagogue. The 27-year-old Cornell University graduate had worked for Rudin Management, which owns the building. Funeral arrangements for the two other victims, security guard Aland Etienne and investment firm executive Wesley LePatner, have not been made public. Police have identified the gunman as Shane Tamura, a 27-year old former high school football player, who authorities say drove from his home in Las Vegas to Manhattan because he believed he had a brain disease linked to contact sports and accused the NFL of hiding the dangers of playing football. Police have said the casino worker had a history of mental illness, but they haven't elaborated other than to say they found psychiatric medication prescribed to him at his residence in Las Vegas.

Shooting New York City LAS VEGAS (AP) — The man who stormed a Manhattan office tower with a gun, killing four people before killing himself, worked in the surveillance department of a Las Vegas casino, part of an industry built on watching for threats before they unfold. Shane Tamura, 27, didn't show up to work his usual shift Sunday at the Horseshoe Las Vegas. Instead, authorities say, he got in his car and drove across the country to carry out a mass shooting inside the skyscraper that houses the National Football League's headquarters. A fifth person, an NFL employee, was wounded in the Monday attack. As investigators work to uncover a motive, questions are being raised about how a man with a documented history of mental health problems — and a recent arrest for erratic behavior at another casino — ended up working in one of the most security-sensitive jobs in Las Vegas. Caesars Entertainment, which owns the Horseshoe, confirmed Tamura's employment but has yet to disclose the nature of his role or whether he was authorized to carry a weapon. A spokesperson didn't respond to emails asking whether Tamura's job required him to hold a valid work card from the state Private Investigator's Licensing Board, which is needed to work as a private security officer in Nevada. State licensing records show Tamura previously held a state-issued license as a private security officer, though it had expired in December. While he held that license, Tamura was arrested at a casino in suburban Las Vegas. A report on the September 2023 arrest says he was asked to leave after he became agitated with casino security and employees who asked him for his ID, and he was arrested on a misdemeanor trespassing charge. Two groups of New York City detectives were on their way to Las Vegas to conduct interviews and search the home, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. Authorities said they were also questioning an associate of Tamura who bought a component of the AR-15-style assault rifle used in the attack. Tisch said Tamura had 'assembled' the weapon and used his concealed carry permit to purchase another firearm, a revolver, last month.
