Dr John O'Driscoll appointed IRFU president
A former British & Irish Lions flanker who represented his country 26 times and made 19 appearances for the Lions across two tours, he was first capped for Ireland in 1978.
Dr O'Driscoll helped Ireland win a first Triple Crown since 1949 when he played a central role in the 1982 Five Nations competition.
He played for Stonyhurst School in Lancashire before going on to represent Liverpool St Helens, Manchester, Connacht and London Irish.
His feats on the field of play saw him elected as Irish Sportsman of the Year in 1980.
After hanging up his boots, Dr O'Driscoll went on to hold coaching, selector and administrative roles.
Speaking after his election to his latest post, Dr O'Driscoll said: "It is a great honour to be elected as the 136th president of the IRFU.
Irish rugby has given so much to me since an early age, first as a supporter, then through a wonderful playing career with London Irish, Connacht and Ireland.
In more recent years, I have been privileged to contribute to the administration of the game alongside people utterly dedicated to its success at every level.
"I look forward to visiting clubs across the country and meeting the volunteers who are the lifeblood of the sport. Their passion, commitment and depth of involvement are vital to Ireland."

Irish challenge falters as Laura Fünfstück fires ahead
The Irish challenge fell away on Day 2 of the PIF London Championship at the Centurion Club as Germany's Laura Fünfstück opened up a three stroke lead heading into the final round. Lurgan's Annabel Wilson had been the leading Irish contender after the opening day but fell away on Saturday, carding a five-over par 78 to fall to +3 overall, just inside the cut-line for tomorrow. Lauren Walsh is best of the Irish performers after Round 2, grinding her way to a two-over 75, with four bogeys and two birdies to sit on two-over par for the tournament. Both Sara Byrne and Anna Foster, carding rounds of 77 and 75 to finish on five-over and seven-over respectively. Defending champion Leona Maguire, who won the individual event last year under its then name of Aramco Team Series, did not compete this week. The leader Fünfstück started with a birdie at the first before rolling in three birdies in four holes on the sixth, eighth and ninth. A dropped shot on 15 was followed by an excellent par-save on 16 before another dropped shot on 17, but she finished in style with a birdie at the last to reach nine-under-par. Four players are in a share of second place with Spain's Carlota Ciganda, Belgium's Manon De Roey, France's Perrine Delacour and South Africa's Casandra Alexander all on six-under-par. Three-time LET winner De Roey went low with a 67 on day two rolling in seven birdies and one bogey to move up the leaderboard. It was an excellent day for Delacour as she went bogey-free with four birdies and one eagle on her scorecard for her round of six-under. England's Cara Gainer and Switzerland's Chiara Tamburlini are in a tie for sixth place on five-under-par with five players one shot further back in tied-eighth.

Ireland suffer defeat to Netherlands in EuroHockey opener
IRELAND SUFFERED a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in their EuroHockey opener at Sparkassen Park, Mönchengladbach today. With Ireland ranked 11th in the world, they were significant underdogs against the world number one team and reigning European Champions. The Dutch took the lead eight minutes into the Pool A encounter. Conor Kelly claims gold for Ireland at European Under-20 Athletics Championships
Ireland's Conor Kelly produced a stellar performance to win gold in the 400m at the Under-20 European Athletics Championships in Finland. The Finn Valley AC athlete lowered his own Irish Under-20 record, clocking a time of 45.83 to win by a comfortable margin from France's Milann Klemenic who finished over half a second behind. Kelly, who turned 18 three weeks ago, had set a new national record of 45.83 at the Morton Games last month but improved on that time in Tampere. Last year, he claimed bronze at the European Championships in Slovakia but has climbed to the top of the podium this year, becoming the ninth Irish athlete to take gold in the championships and underline his status as the leading Under-20 400m sprinter on the continent. Kelly, who was born in London to Irish parents, said he had dreamt in finishing top of the podium at an international podium. "It's special. Honestly, I've dreamed about this everyday. Every minute of every day," he told Athletics Ireland after his victory. In the same race, Athenry's Seán Doggett placed seventh in a time of 47.16. Earlier, Cormac Dixon finished ninth in the final of the 3000m, while Precious Akpe-Moses was run out of the medals in the 200m, finishing fourth in a time of 23.72.
