Will Smith reveals advice from JAY-Z and Kendrick Lamar before releasing new album
Will Smith has shared the valuable advice given to him by JAY-Z and Kendrick Lamar before embarking on his musical comeback.
The Hollywood actor and rapper released his first album in two decades, Based On A True Story, which dropped on March 28. In a recent interview on Sway In The Morning on SiriusXM, Smith revealed that he sought advice from two rap icons—JAY-Z and Kendrick Lamar—before diving back into the music scene. Both artists, despite their different approaches, offered him remarkably similar guidance.
"I made two phone calls," Smith said, recalling his conversations. "I talked to Jay and I talked to Kendrick, asking, 'What's the advice?''
JAY-Z's counsel focused on authenticity. 'He said, 'Don't fake your story,'' Smith recalled. ''You gotta say what's true for you. Be true to your story.'' This advice stuck with Smith, influencing the concept behind his upcoming album. 'That's where I got the Based On A True Story from Jay,' Smith explained.
Kendrick Lamar's advice mirrored JAY-Z's in essence, even if it was phrased differently. "He said, 'Man, just say that s### you always been f###### scared to say,'' Smith shared, acknowledging the challenge that came with being so open and honest. "It was scary, right? To just, like, say it," Smith admitted.
Instead of crafting his music to please others or chasing trends, Smith focused on creating something that feels authentic to him. 'Make the record you want to make,' he said. 'Don't try to make the record that you think people will like you for. Make the one that's authentic.'
Smith's Based On A True Story features 14 tracks and guest appearances from notable artists such as his son Jaden, Big Sean, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and Teyana Taylor.

Love Is Blind stars AD Smith and Ollie Sutherland announce pregnancy after recent engagement
Amber Desiree 'AD' Smith and fiancé Ollie Sutherland, known for their appearances on Love Is Blind, have announced they are expecting their first child. The couple shared the news via a joint Instagram post on Sunday, May 25, just two months after revealing their engagement during the Love Is Blind Season 8 reunion. In the announcement video, Smith and Sutherland are seen walking through a nature setting, holding hands and sharing affectionate moments. The clip ends with the couple turning to the camera and resting their hands on Smith's baby bump while smiling, set to Monica's 'Angel of Mine.' The caption read: 'How you changed my world, you'll never know.' The pair first met while filming Season 3 of Perfect Match in early 2024, which is expected to premiere this summer. Though they were spotted together after production wrapped — including a dinner date in Mexico — their relationship remained private until the Love Is Blind reunion aired on March 9. Sutherland proposed during the reunion in a beachfront moment, calling Smith his 'best friend' and the 'love of [his] life.' Shortly after the Instagram reveal, fellow Love Is Blind cast members flooded the post with congratulatory messages. Freddy Powell joked about becoming the baby's godfather, while Zack Goytowski expressed joy for the expecting couple. On Smith's March 11 episode of her podcast What's the Reality?, the couple also revealed plans to host two wedding ceremonies — one in the United States for Smith's family and another in the United Kingdom for Sutherland's relatives. Smith and Sutherland continue to share glimpses of their relationship journey with fans, marking new milestones as they prepare to become first-time parents.

'It was really like a high school, college experience because it was full on,' Hannigan shared. Gellar added, 'I was 17 when we did the pilot, 18 when we started, so I looked to all of them because I was learning.' The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, officially announced in February 2025, has fans buzzing. Notably, Gellar is returning to reprise her iconic role, with director and lifelong fan Chloe Zhao helming the pilot. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are writing the series, promising a modern take while honoring the original's legacy. Gellar emphasized that her hope for the reboot is to bring comfort and connection. 'Buffy is still hitting people who are watching it for the first time. They're seeing themselves, their friends, and their chosen family,' she said. 'More than ever right now, we need that.' Both Gellar and Hannigan reflected on how their roles have come full circle. 'We used to play teens and now we have teens,' Hannigan noted, highlighting the generational resonance the show continues to hold. Stephen A. Smith for President? Donald Trump gives his backing
ESPN host and NBA commentator Stephen A. Smith says he was 'aghast' after receiving what he called an unexpected "endorsement" from U.S. President Donald Trump, who said he'd 'love to see' Smith run for president. The exchange unfolded during a NewsNation town hall earlier this week, where commentator Bill O'Reilly, appearing alongside Smith, called Trump and asked if he had advice for Smith should he consider entering the 2028 race. "Stephen A., he is a good guy, a smart guy," Trump replied. "I love watching him. He's got great entertainment skills, which is very important… I'd love to see him run." While the moment was initially treated with humour, Smith addressed it seriously on his own podcast The Stephen A. Smith Show, acknowledging the weight of the comment. 'Regardless of how some of you feel about him, he is still the president of the United States… it counts for something,' he said. Smith, who has no political experience, reiterated that he's never wanted to be a politician. But he's kept the door open, citing encouragement from both elected officials and his pastor. 'You don't know what God has planned for you,' he added. Speaking on CNN's State of the Union with Jake Tapper on Sunday, Smith elaborated: 'I wasn't looking for any kind of endorsement… especially from him. But there's a bit of flattery that comes with getting such words from the man who holds the highest office in the land.' Pressed on whether he believes he could win if he ran, Smith said confidently, 'You're d*mn right.' While Smith's presidential ambitions remain hypothetical, the political world is already bracing for a competitive 2028 race. Prominent Democrats like Gavin Newsom, Pete Buttigieg, and Gretchen Whitmer are all rumoured contenders following the party's sweeping defeats in 2024. Meanwhile, Trump has launched merch for a 2028 reelection bid. As for Smith, he's not making any official announcements — but the buzz surrounding his name just got a serious boost.
