Bullion Bull Run: 1 tola gold costlier than a kg of silver

Time of India22-04-2025

Nagpur: The gold-silver equation has gone haywire. In a rare instance, traders say 1kg of silver is cheaper than one tola (10 gram) of gold, indicating a sharp increase in gold prices.
On Tuesday, the rate of a tola of gold stood at Rs99,000 (Rs101,970 with GST), while one kg of silver was at Rs97,000. The yellow metal crossed the Rs1 lakh mark with GST on Monday itself. A difference of Rs2,000 is not only significant but, but also not in line with the normal trends, say traders. A tola and a kg are standard measures for gold in the domestic market. Globally, the rates are quoted in dollars per ounce. Normally, one kg of silver remains costlier than one tola of gold.
This indicates a one-sided rally in the price of gold, which has now left silver behind. The sliding dollar, differences between the US President and Fed chief, and volatile geopolitical situations have led to funds being parked in gold, fuelling its price. The same factors have impacted the industrial consumption of silver, keeping its rates moderate. Silver also has an industrial use while gold is used in ornaments and as a safe haven asset.
Rajesh Rokde, president of Gems and Jewellery Council (GJC), said this shows that if gold is racing ahead, silver still has some headroom. TOI collected the last five years' rates from the local market at Sarafa Oli in Itwari. A person who invested in the yellow metal in the Covid year of 2020 now stands to gain more than double the principal amount. Silver, on the other hand, has given 25% returns since then.

Around March-April 2020, gold rates stood at Rs41,600 a tola, now touching Rs99,000 (without GST), an increase of 137% since then. Silver, on the other hand, gave over 25% returns compared to the physical market rates. Meanwhile, the gold exchange-traded funds (ETF) rates have also crossed Rs81 a unit, while silver ETFs are over Rs93 on average.
Investors in sovereign gold bonds got a price of Rs9,669 per unit for premature redemption of bonds issued in October 2018, again giving handsome returns, said market sources.

Hagawanes in magisterial custody remand till June 16

1 2 Pune: The court of judicial magistrate first class Amol Shinde on Tuesday extended the custodial remand till June 7 of Nilesh Chavan, business associate of Shashank Hagawane and co-accused in the dowry death case of Vaishnavi Hagawane. The court sent Vaishnavi's father-in-law Rajendra Hagawane and brother-in-law to magisterial custody remand till June 16. They were later sent to the Yerawada Central Jail. Bavdhan police's senior inspector Anil Vibhute produced Chavan and the Hagawanes before the court following the end of their initial custodial remand. Vibhute filed a remand report to extend Chavan's custodial remand by five days and sought magisterial custody for Hagawanes. Assistant public prosecutor Nitin Adagale told the court that the custodial interrogation of Chavan was essential because the police recovered a firearm licence, revolver and two cellphones of Vaishnavi's mother-in-law Lata and Shashank's sister Karishma from him. Adagale argued that investigations revealed Chavan's involvement in a criminal conspiracy along with the other co-accused and sought time to find out if he mistreated Vaishnavi's nine-month-old boy and why had he forcibly taken possession of the child. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Descubra ofertas de voos imperdíveis Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo The prosecution said Chavan was communicating with the other co-accused over the phone and sought time to examine their call records and collect details of financial transactions done by them, if any, for the purpose of collecting evidence. The prosecutor relied on the statement of witnesses stating that Chavan abetted the victim's suicide in the case and prayed that sufficient time be given to the police for detailed investigations. Defence lawyer Swanand Govindwar opposed the prosecution's plea on the grounds that the court had given enough time for Chavan's questioning and his custodial interrogation was not essential. The court upheld the prosecution's plea on the grounds that there was sufficient progress in the investigations. Vaishnavi's husband, mother-in-law arrested in cheating case MIDC Mhalunge police on Tuesday secured the custody of Vaishnavi Hagawane's husband Shashank and mother-in-law Lata from the Yerawada Central Jail and arrested them for duping a farmer to the tune of Rs11.7 lakh in a case relating to an excavation machine transaction since March 20, 2022. Khed court judicial magistrate first class JB Mhaske sent the duo to police custody remand for three days. Farmer Prashant Yelwande (33), a resident of Nighoje village in Khed, registered a complaint with the police on May 29 stating that he had purchased an excavation machine in Lata's name for Rs11.7 lakh through a recovery agent and was paying EMI of Rs 50,000 per month to Shashank. However, instead of depositing the money in the bank, Shashank colluded with the agent and got the machine seized from Yelwande's possession and duped him. Later, Shashank refused to return the machine or repay the EMI paid by Yelwande and allegedly threatened him with a gun.

Punjab Cabinet approves Rs 68cr loan waiver for 4,700 SC families

Chandigarh: The Punjab Cabinet on Tuesday gave its nod to waive loans of an aggregate amount of Rs 67.84 crore taken by 4,727 Scheduled Caste (SC) and disabled loanees from the Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation (PSCFC), with chief minister Bhagwant Mann stating that debt accrued until March 31, 2020, would be waived. A spokesperson said that the waiver covers all loans disbursed by the PSCFC up to the fixed date, offering relief to Scheduled Caste and Divyangjan (persons with disabilities) loanees. The move will benefit a total of 4,727 loanees. The Cabinet granted ex-post facto approval for the waiver of loans disbursed up to March 31, 2020, for loanees of the PSCFC, he said. Hitting out at the previous govts, Mann alleged that these families were exploited as "vote banks" through false promises. These loans, Mann explained, were taken for various small enterprises like ration shops, hardware stores, boutiques, and even for education. He added that beneficiaries couldn't repay due to unforeseen circumstances, such as the death of an earning family member or prolonged illness, and that the waiver would provide them significant relief. CM Mann stated that the loan waiver was a fulfilment of a promise made in the State Budget 2025-26. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Descubra ofertas de voos imperdíveis Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo He noted that the corporation, established in 1971, has provided over Rs 847 crore in low-interest loans to more than 5.50 lakh Scheduled Caste families to date. Mann added that many families petitioned the state govt, citing their inability to repay the loans due to a lack of funds. Finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated these loans were pending for almost 20 years, with previous governments failing to address the families' requests for relief. He noted that despite the corporation serving economically vulnerable families, it maintained a surprisingly high loan recovery rate of 84%. This, he highlighted, indicates that the enterprises started by these families are largely successful. Mann also pointed to the cooperative bank in Dhuri, which boasts an almost 99% recovery rate, in stark contrast to the negative rates seen elsewhere. All 4,727 cases (including 4,685 defaulting loanees and 42 regular loanees) will be covered under this loan waiver scheme. "No Due Certificates" (NDCs) will be issued by the district managers of PSCFC. The full amount of Rs 67.84 crore, comprising principal, interest, and penal interest calculated as of April 30, 2025, will be reimbursed to the PSCFC by the state govt. The cut-off date for calculating the final interest amount will be the date on which the govt issues the notification to implement the scheme," a source said. With the implementation of this waiver, 4,727 poor SC and Divyangjan beneficiaries will receive relief amounting to Rs 67.84 crore — comprising Rs 30.02 crore in principal, Rs 22.95 crore in interest, and Rs 14.87 crore in penal interest (calculated up to April 30, 2025). This initiative will help restore their dignity. As per the 2011 Census, Scheduled Castes constitute 31.94% of Punjab's total population. Many members of this community have availed loans from PSCFC to establish self-employment ventures aimed at their economic upliftment. However, some borrowers have been unable to repay their loans due to circumstances beyond their control, leading to defaults, said the spokesperson. MSID: 121600011 413 |
