Yahoo4 days ago

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — Almost four months after meeting the newest cohort of the 'Getting Ahead' program, they're now graduates.
The program is facilitated by Bridges Cooperative Ministry, a ministry group of Franklin Street Church in downtown Johnstown.
'What we're seeing is within one year after graduating that over half of our graduates will actually see increases in their income. They'll see increases in their assets, decreases in their liabilities, their debts. And so, we're super excited for what the future holds for our grads,' Bridges Cooperative Ministry Executive Director, Sonya Dunlap-Horner, said.
Since the program began in 2015, 164 people have completed the program, including this year's graduates.

Dunlap-Horner said the entire team is proud of the graduates, especially after witnessing the challenges they've faced and dealing with change. They've all become a family over the four months, leaning on each other for support.
'It was not easy. It was hard. But trust me, once you decide to dedicate yourself to what you're doing, put in the hard work, you're going to make it,' Cyndi Jean Pierre, a 2025 graduate, said.
Now that she's graduated from the program, Cyndi said she's ready for the next step.
'I am very happy that I finally accomplished my goal with 'Getting Ahead.' And, I am just so ready for the next step in my life, which, first on my list, would be definitely going back to college, because I'm definitely trying to make a better experience and better living for me and my daughter,' Jean Pierre said.
The Getting Ahead program is partnering with local banks to teach their students financial management. They will start a financial literacy program in the fall with Ameriserv Bank.
Once they complete the full ten weeks, they will receive a $150 savings account that will be opened in their name.

‘Its corruption' PA Rep. aims to block $TRUMP, other crypto deals for public officials

PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — A Pennsylvania Representative is attempting to block President Donald Trump-style cryptocurrency from being used by public officials. In January 2025, days before being sworn in, Trump launched a cryptocurrency called '$TRUMP,' which is currently worth $10.74 per stock. The currency was marketed as a 'meme coin,' with no real utility and no 'regulatory oversight,' according to Representative Ben Waxman (D-Philadelphia). Waxman argued in his latest legislation that the $TRUMP currency is 'corruption, plain and simple.' $TRUMP coin is described as a cryptocurrency supporting the Trump administration and its 'conservative followers and Patriots,' according to In May, Trump held a contest for coin buyers, awarding the top 220 holders of the meme coin the opportunity to go to a dinner at Trump's Washington-area golf club. The top 25 holders also got to attend a reception as well, according to the Associated Press. Waxman argued that as the coin gains momentum, Trump then benefits financially either directly through ownership of large reserves or indirectly via related entities and promotional deals. Then, Trump pushes to roll back federal oversight of crypto markets, and in doing so, Waxman wrote that it shields Trump's own schemes from 'scrutiny.' The legislation aims to prohibit elected officials from profiting off cryptocurrency while in office. This would include launching, promoting or trading coins where they hold a personal financial interest. Waxman added that public service must 'never be a get-rich-quick scheme.' Penn Highlands Community College receives $1.1 million endowed to fund full-tuition scholarship program

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — A $1.1 million gift is set to open new doors for local students at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, thanks to a newly announced endowment that will fund full-tuition scholarships beginning in Fall 2026. The Margaret J. Pardee Scholarship will cover the full cost of tuition and fees for full-time Penn Highlands students for one academic year, with the option to reapply the following year. The college expects to award six of these scholarships annually. Eligibility requires applicants to enroll full time in a degree-seeking program and show financial need, academic excellence, and extracurricular involvement. Priority consideration will be given to students graduating from Northern Cambria or Cambria Heights high schools who live within the service areas of the Hope Fire Company or Hastings Fire Company. Applications for the scholarship will open in March 2026. To honor the legacy of Margaret J. Pardee, the college plans to install commemorative plaques at both Northern Cambria and Cambria Heights high schools, pending approval from each district. The scholarship is managed by the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation, which supports student opportunities through private donations, events and grants. Since its founding in 1995, the Foundation has worked to advance the college's mission of providing accessible, high-quality education. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
