News1821-07-2025
Ghaziabad, Jul 21 (PTI) One kanwariya was killed while two others were seriously injured after their motorcycle hit a road divider near the Bhojpur toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad district, police said on Monday.
According to Modinagar ACP Gyan Prakash Rai, the three men — Akash Bisht, Anshul Awasthi and Rahul Chaubey, all in their mid 20s — were returning to Bhangel in Noida after collecting holy water from Haridwar as part of the annual Kanwar Yatra.
Around midnight on Sunday, their bike crashed into a divider after the rider, Akash, allegedly fell asleep while driving, the officer said.
'All three sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the Subharti Medical College in Meerut, where doctors declared Anshul Awasthi dead. The other two are currently undergoing treatment," the ACP added. PTI COR KIS ARI

Greek police seize over 270 kg cocaine worth over 5.5 million euros, 3 arrested

Thessaloniki (Greece), Aug 10 (AP) Greek police said on Sunday they seized over 270 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated value of over 5.5 million euros (USD 6.5 million) and arrested three men. The cocaine was hidden inside a container of bananas imported from Ecuador, they said. Police had been informed by the United Kingdom's National Crime Agency that the cocaine would be carried by a ship headed to the northern Greek port of Thessaloniki. Police officers found the cocaine and removed most of the drug contained in brick-sized packages from the container before it was loaded into a truck. They released a short video of the removal operation. The truck headed for the Athens suburb of Aspropyrgos, more that 500 kilometres to the south, where the police arrested three men as they opened the container on Saturday. The total amount of cocaine seized was 271.15 kilograms, police said. The arrested men include two Greeks, the 40-year-old owner of a haulage company, a 32-year-old and a 47-year-old Bulgarian citizen, police say, adding that the Bulgarian was in touch with a drug gang and organised the picking up and transport of the container. The 32-year-old was in charge of distributing the drug through unnamed gang members. Police are looking for more people they say belong to a drug distribution gang. The three arrested men will face a prosecutor on Monday. (AP) RUK RUK view comments First Published: August 11, 2025, 04:00 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Punjab: 2 men open fire at Hoshiarpur YouTuber's house, none hurt

Two unidentified bike-borne miscreants fired gunshots at the house of a social media influencer (YouTuber), Simran Sikand, alias Sam, in Model Town locality on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. No one was injured in the incident. The assailants fled before a cop deployed in family's security could respond. Two used cartridges were recovered from the spot, sub-inspector (SI) Gursahib Singh from the Model Town police station said. Police at the spot where two unidentified bike-borne miscreants fired gunshots at the house of a social media influencer Simran Sikand's house in Hoshiarpur on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. (HT Photo) A CCTV footage showed the two bikers turning up outside Sam's house at 12.40 am and the pillion rider opening fire. Sam said he heard the gunshot but mistook it for firecrackers before he was informed by his security guard. SI Gursahib Singh stated that a few months ago, Sikand commented on a religious post on social media, which allegedly led to an online argument with Shahzad Bhatti, a Pakistani national, and Dalbir Singh of Hoshiarpur. Sikand claimed that Bhatti threatened him with a grenade attack at his house, following which the YouTuber was provided police security. He revealed that several attempts have been made on him and his family in the recent past and that he had received a threat from Pakistan-based don Shahzad Bhatti in March. 'In a video call, Bhatti had told me that I was his target,' claimed Sam. Bhatti had taken the responsibility for a grenade attack at the house of Jalandhar-based YouTuber Rozar Sandhu and senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia earlier this year. Sam alleged that he had conveyed his security concerns to senior police officers many times but he was not provided proper security. 'One of the two security personnel deployed at my house is physically challenged and incapable of defending my family,' he added. An FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act has been registered at the Model Town police station, said police, and further investigation is underway. Hundreds honour security guard killed in New York office tower shooting

New York, Aug 10 (AP) Hundreds turned out to honour the life of Aland Etienne, the security guard who was killed last month at a Manhattan office tower by a gunman targeting the headquarters of the National Football League. An immigrant from Haiti who came to the US in 2017 with a dream for a new life, Etienne was remembered as a dedicated father and grandfather who was faithfully working at his security post when the gunman suddenly opened fire on July 28. 'My brother will be remembered as a hero. A humble, steady, kind New York hero," said Smith Etienne, Aland's brother, in a statement. 'Aland made the ultimate sacrifice, choosing bravery and selflessness over fear. In his final moments, he acted to protect others." The memorial service was held on Saturday in Brooklyn for Etienne, 46, the last of the four shooting victims to be laid to rest. A New York City police officer, an investment firm executive and a real estate firm worker were also killed. The gunman wounded a fifth person before taking his own life. Like Etienne, slain NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was working a department-approved private security detail that day, was an immigrant. Islam was Bangladeshi-American. Manny Pastreich, president of Etienne's union, 32BJ SEIU, said Etienne represents not only essential workers who are the backbone of New York City, but also immigrants who come to the US to build a better life and contribute in both large and small ways. 'His legacy will serve as a reminder of the contributions of immigrants, and the sacrifices, they make every day," Pastreich said in a statement. Security officers from buildings across New York held a vigil last week to honor Etienne.
