PTRS To Be Enhanced To Boost Students' Performance In Pure Science Subjects
SHAH ALAM, April 24 (Bernama) -- Program Tuisyen Rakyat Selangor (PTRS) will continue to be improved with the introduction of biology, physics and chemistry to its list of subjects, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the move was part of efforts to assist students sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination in improving their performance in Pure Science subjects.

'The desire to enhance the quality of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects has borne fruit, as evidenced by the improved performance in elective subjects in the 2024 SPM Subject Average Grade (GPMP). We will continue to strengthen Biology, Physics, and Chemistry in the future,' he said.
He said this to reporters at the announcement of the 2024 SPM results for Selangor by State Education director Dr Jafri Abu here today.
Introduced in 2009, PTRS offers extra tuition in subjects such as Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Additional Mathematics for students from low-income families with average or poor academic performance.
PTRS also provides allowances to 1,956 teachers and coordinators involved, while students from 277 participating schools are given free lunches.
Amirudin added that he believed the state government's intervention through PTRS had, to some extent, succeeded in improving both student achievements and the quality of education in Selangor, as reflected in the State Average Grade (GPN) for the 2024 SPM results, which were announced today.
Selangor recorded a GPN of 4.59 for 2024, an increase of 0.08 points from 4.67 last year, with 2,368 candidates, or 3.65 per cent, out of 73,799 achieving excellent results in all subjects, compared to 2,005 candidates (3.15 per cent) in 2023.

Malaysian Universities Urged To Offer AI Programmes, Set Up AI Faculties
TAWAU, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Higher Education has called on all universities in the country to offer programmes or establish faculties related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), in preparation for the growing demand for AI talents across various industries. Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has taken the lead in AI education by establishing the country's first AI faculty. 'We have made it clear that all universities should offer and open faculties and programmes related to AI, and the government will continue to monitor the latest developments in this field. 'In addition to AI, we are also seeing new developments in quantum technology,' he told reporters after officiating the appointment ceremony for the chairman of the Sabah Community College Advisory Committee, here today. He said the Ministry is also ready to offer AI-related courses at community colleges nationwide. 'Community colleges will not be bound by rigid course content and will be open to emerging fields. This will enable graduates to be more employable, as their skills are aligned with current market demands,' he said. At the same time, Zambry said the government would review the viability of community colleges that are no longer active or reassess the programmes offered at the inactive colleges. 'This is because some colleges are offering programmes that are not well-suited or have not received good response from the local community or students,' he said. Commenting on the water supply issue at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Zambry said he hoped that the issue could be resolved by the state government, as the ministry and the federal government have channelled RM5 million, including for the construction of underground piping.

Proposed Commission Seen As Game Changer In TVET Transformation Agenda
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- The proposed establishment of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission is expected to strengthen its mandate and broaden its role, in advancing the national TVET transformation agenda. Polytechnic and Community College Education Department director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Zahari Ismail said the commission, if realised, could function as an independent and autonomous body, with the authority to formulate policies, set standards, and oversee the implementation of TVET programmes, nationwide. Unlike the National TVET Council, which serves as a policy and coordination platform without legislative authority, Mohd Zahari said that the proposed TVET Commission would have the mandate to approve programmes, regulate institutions, and ensure quality, in line with the national education framework. 'It would address the fragmentation within the current TVET system, which involves multiple ministries, and enable more consistent collaboration between industry players, institutions, and the government,' he told Bernama when contacted. Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the government is considering a proposal to establish a TVET Commission, as part of efforts to further strengthen technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in the country. Prof Dr Mohamad Sattar Rasul, chairman of the Centre for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Enculturation, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's (UKM), said that the proposed establishment of the commission would enable more effective monitoring of TVET programme implementation. 'The authority to oversee TVET implementation is crucial, to ensure a more harmonised approach, as many programmes under different ministries currently overlap or compete with one another,' he said. He said that the establishment of the TVET Commission would help create a more structured and effective technical education and training landscape in the country. He added that the TVET sector holds strong potential to become a key driver of the national economy, while also providing broad employment opportunities for future generations.
