Malaysian Universities Urged To Offer AI Programmes, Set Up AI Faculties
TAWAU, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Higher Education has called on all universities in the country to offer programmes or establish faculties related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), in preparation for the growing demand for AI talents across various industries.
Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has taken the lead in AI education by establishing the country's first AI faculty.
'We have made it clear that all universities should offer and open faculties and programmes related to AI, and the government will continue to monitor the latest developments in this field.
'In addition to AI, we are also seeing new developments in quantum technology,' he told reporters after officiating the appointment ceremony for the chairman of the Sabah Community College Advisory Committee, here today.
He said the Ministry is also ready to offer AI-related courses at community colleges nationwide.
'Community colleges will not be bound by rigid course content and will be open to emerging fields. This will enable graduates to be more employable, as their skills are aligned with current market demands,' he said.
At the same time, Zambry said the government would review the viability of community colleges that are no longer active or reassess the programmes offered at the inactive colleges.
'This is because some colleges are offering programmes that are not well-suited or have not received good response from the local community or students,' he said.
Commenting on the water supply issue at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Zambry said he hoped that the issue could be resolved by the state government, as the ministry and the federal government have channelled RM5 million, including for the construction of underground piping.

RM30 Million Boost To Strengthen Media Ecosystem
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The RM30 million digital transformation allocation is seen as an opportunity for media practitioners to acquire new skills, adapt to modern tools and enhance the quality of storytelling. Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) president Mariah Doksil said the association viewed it as a significant recognition in shaping an informed and democratic society, especially in a world increasingly shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI) that required journalists to be equipped with the right competencies to remain relevant and ethical. 'We hope that any training or programmes under this allocation will help journalists not only prioritise factual accuracy without AI manipulation, but also retain the human soul and empathy in journalism,' she told Bernama here today. Mariah stressed the need for inclusive implementation, emphasising engagement with state media associations especially from Sabah and Sarawak, and called for clear KPIs to measure impact effectively. In JOHOR, Johor Media Club president Mohamad Fauzi Ishak said the announced allocation could be used to increase training related to AI and empower new technology in content production or digital platforms, which are increasingly popular among audiences. 'Therefore, media practitioners now need to be more proactive in learning how to use technology in the media world so that their functions and roles align with the intended objectives. 'This will enable media organisations to enhance their image and credibility as fast, efficient and reliable providers of information,' said Fauzi, who is also Malaysian Media Clubs Federation (GKMM) president. Meanwhile, Universiti Putra Malaysia Senior Lecturer in Communications Dr Syed Agil Alsagoff said the allocation proved the government's commitment to ensuring the media industry remains competitive and relevant. With this financial support, he said media organisations could invest in technologies such as AI, data analytics and digital platforms to improve efficiency and the quality of content produced.

With this financial support, he said media organisations could invest in technologies such as AI, data analytics and digital platforms to improve efficiency and the quality of content produced. 'However, as emphasised by the Prime Minister, it is important to maintain a balance between the use of AI and journalistic ethics,' he said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when officiating the the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today, announced the RM30 million allocation for media organisations in the country to implement digital transformation and adopt new technology in content production. The HAWANA 2025 celebration, organised by the Ministry of Communications with Bernama as the implementing agency, is aimed at recognising the role and contributions of media practitioners in the nation's development. May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the first publication of Utusan Melayu on May 29, 1939, to commemorate the contributions of industry players who have been instrumental in shaping an informed society.

RM30m fund to boost media's digital transformation
KUALA LUMPUR: The RM30 million allocation announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for digital transformation will help media organisations adapt to the evolving media landscape, particularly in facing challenges posed by social media and meeting the expectations of the new generation, especially Gen Z. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the fund is one of the largest in the country's journalism history and aims to strengthen the digital capabilities of local media organisations. 'This may be one of the largest allocations ever provided for the media — RM30 million. 'We hope this fund will help media organisations navigate the ongoing changes, especially the emergence of social media and the preferences of new readers and viewers, particularly Gen Z,' he told a press conference after the HAWANA 2025 highlight event at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', the event was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and attended by about 1,000 media practitioners from Malaysia and abroad. Also present at the press conference were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Capital A Bhd chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, and Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2025 project director. Fahmi said the fund was partly inspired by the success of a previous collaboration with Google, which involved over 30 media organisations in efforts to find new revenue sources through digital platforms. This year, the partnership continues with a new initiative known as Project Sigma, named to reflect Gen Z's interest in the term. The project aims to help media organisations better understand the content consumption behaviour of the younger generation. 'The results from Project Sigma were very encouraging. The RM30 million fund will not only support similar initiatives but also help media outlets explore new platforms, reach new audiences, and experiment with new formats in the pursuit of sustainability,' he said. Fahmi added that the Communications Ministry will soon announce the mechanism for fund application and management. On the one-off 50 per cent discount for round-trip tickets to any of the 57 ASEAN destinations, Fahmi said it was not only a token of appreciation from AirAsia to journalists, but also an opportunity to explore the region and strengthen regional ties. He also announced that AirAsia plans to dedicate an aircraft to the media fraternity, with a journalism-themed plane featuring a special name, livery and design to be unveiled at a future event. Earlier, the Prime Minister announced the RM30 million allocation to support the media industry's adoption of digital technologies and the production of modern content. HAWANA 2025, organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency, aims to recognise the contributions of media practitioners to national development. May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day, in conjunction with the first publication of Utusan Melayu on May 29, 1939, to honour the media's role in shaping an informed and progressive society.
