Anti-ticket scalping law mulled as fans cry foul over high concert tickets
JOHOR BARU: The Communications Ministry will hold discussions with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry to address the growing problem of concert ticket scalping, including the possibility of introducing an anti-scalping law. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said complaints have poured in over tickets being resold at up to five times their original price, especially for international acts performing in Malaysia. "This issue surfaces every time a big-name international artiste holds a concert here. We will engage with the domestic trade ministry, event organisers, and e-ticketing companies to find the most suitable solution," she said after launching the Johor-level Madani MSME Digital Grant Festival 2025 in Permas Jaya today. Citing the recent G-Dragon concert, Teo said some fans paid five times the face value due to overwhelming demand, with scalpers bulk-buying and reselling tickets at inflated prices. She added that the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry was studying the matter and that lessons could be drawn from countries that have implemented anti-scalping legislation.

Malaysia Mulls Anti-Scalping Law To Curb Soaring Reselling Prices
The government is considering introducing legislation to curb concert ticket scalping, as inflated resale prices for high-demand shows continue to frustrate fans and dent Malaysia's live entertainment market. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said her ministry will hold discussions with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) and relevant stakeholders to address the growing problem, which has been most apparent at international concerts such as K-pop star G-Dragon's, where scalpers have resold tickets at hefty mark-ups. Additionally, scalpers were found on social media selling tickets to the concert of My Chemical Romance in Kuala Lumpur, scheduled for April 30 next year, at exorbitant prices, including one offering a Zone C category ticket worth RM499 for RM6,000. 'KPDN is currently reviewing the matter, including the possibility of introducing a Bill to address it. The Communications Ministry has also engaged with event organisers and ticketing companies to find the most suitable solution,' Teo said. She shared that she has had a meeting with KPDN and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission on Aug 1 to gather input from agencies tasked with monitoring and enforcing ticket sales. 'The discussions also reviewed international best practices in countries with dedicated anti-scalping laws,' she said.
