Lee to hold 2nd meeting of emergency economic task force on Monday
President Lee Jae-myung will hold the second meeting of the emergency economic task force this week, his office said on Sunday, which is likely discuss an additional supplementary budget to boost the local economy.
Lee is set to preside over the session with presidential aides, relevant authorities and working-level officials on Monday, with economic stimulus measures and details of the second supplementary budget expected to be high on the agenda, reports Yonhap news agency.
Lee chaired the first meeting of the task force on his first day in office last week, during which he was briefed on the assessment of the local economy and potential effects of an extra budget.
During his campaign, Lee pledged to introduce an additional extra budget of at least 30 trillion won (US$22.1 billion) to revitalise the sluggish economy.
As the National Assembly approved a 13.8 trillion-won extra budget bill last month, the additional budget is expected to be at least 20 trillion won.
Rep. Jin Sung-joon, policy chair of the ruling Democratic Party, said in a recent radio interview that the party is considering a supplementary budget worth 20-21 trillion won, noting 14 trillion won in spending, out of its initial proposal of 35 trillion won, was already confirmed in the first supplementary budget.
Meanwhile, the finance ministry held a meeting last week to discuss drafting a second supplementary budget bill with an aim to boost the local economy, officials said, following President Lee Jae-myung's call for economic recovery efforts.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance held the meeting earlier in the day as a follow-up measure to the emergency government task force (TF) meeting held the previous day to address economic challenges, according to the officials.
In the TF meeting, Lee asked government officials detailed questions regarding the government's fiscal capacity for an extra budget and the immediate economic stimulus effects it would generate, according to presidential spokeswoman Kang Yu-jung.
During his election campaign, Lee had vowed to introduce an additional extra budget of at least 30 trillion won (US$22.1 billion) to revitalize South Korea's sluggish economy and improve people's livelihoods.

All-party Parliamentary delegation led by Shashi Tharoor wraps up US visit
The all-party Parliamentary delegation wrapped up its visit to the US after meeting with US Vice President J D Vance and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau among political and diplomatic leadership to drive home India's strong resolve to combat terrorism emanating from Pakistan. The delegation, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor , was on the last leg of a multi-nation tour to brief key interlocutors about Operation Sindoor that India launched in retaliation of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The delegation was one of the seven multi-party delegations India had tasked to visit 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community to emphasise Pakistan's links to terrorism. Ukraine denies presence of Russian forces in Dnipropetrovsk region
Kyiv's armed forces rejected as 'disinformation' Russia's claim that its ground troops have crossed into Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region for the first time, even as prospects for a US-brokered ceasefire remain elusive. Separately, Ukraine and Russia continued testy exchanges over the details of a planned large prisoner swap agreed to during last week's talks in Turkey. The exchange is likely to move ahead in the coming days. Russia's defense ministry said Sunday that units of its 90th tank regiment had crossed the western administrative border of Donetsk into neighboring Dnipropetrovsk, in what would be a symbolic milestone in their years-long offensive. In response, Ukraine's southern defense forces said its troops were 'holding their section of the front' while involved in a situation that, while 'tense,' is still contained within the Donetsk region. At issue is the potential advance by Moscow's land forces into one of Ukraine's most populous and industrialized areas. The value of reaching the edge of the region appears mostly symbolic, as Kremlin troops are still more than 140 kilometers (87 miles) away from the regional capital of Dnipro, which is also protected by the river of the same name and its system of estuaries. Kremlin units in recent days have been advancing closer to the regional capital of Sumy in Ukraine's northeast. Parts of the Sumy region were occupied during Russia's 2022 full-scale invasion, and liberated in a Ukrainian counteroffensive. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said last week that Russia's renewed focus on the Sumy region was 'not a surprise' for the Ukrainian army, which is doing its best to repel the advance. Sumy's regional governor said Sunday there was no need for an emergency evacuation of residents, according to the public broadcaster Suspilne. Ukraine's coordination headquarters for the treatment of POWs on Sunday said 'everything is moving according to plan' to move ahead with a major prisoner swap agreed on June 2, which will also include the return of bodies of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers held in Russia. Russia on Saturday suggested Ukraine was to blame for delays in starting the exchange.
