Director General of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KPCTA), Habibullah Arif, has reported a remarkable surge in tourism during the three-day Eidul Azha holidays, with approximately 700,000 tourists visiting popular destinations across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Speaking exclusively to a private news channel, DG Arif expressed enthusiasm over the strong turnout. "We are thrilled to witness such an overwhelming response from tourists. K-P's breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality have made it a preferred destination this year," he said.
Breaking down the numbers, Arif noted that Swat welcomed around 288,000 visitors, Galyat saw 177,000, and Chitral and Upper Dir jointly received 100,000 tourists. Other top spots like Naran-Kaghan and Malam Jabba also drew large crowds, attracting visitors seeking natural beauty, adventure, and cultural experiences.
"Tourists were drawn by the region's stunning scenery, outdoor activities, and vibrant traditions," he added.
The DG emphasised the authority's commitment to sustainable tourism, stating, "We are focused on enhancing our infrastructure, improving services, and providing facilities to accommodate the growing number of tourists. Our goal is to ensure every visitor enjoys a safe and memorable experience."
He also highlighted efforts to maintain affordability and comfort, saying, "Within our available resources, we are ensuring the provision of quality food and working to regulate the prices of food and hotel services."
In a bid to diversify tourist offerings, Arif said the KPCTA is actively identifying hidden gems across the province and organising camping and adventure tourism activities to showcase K-P's lesser-known natural wonders.

Women trekkers make history at Tirich Mir

In a landmark achievement for adventure tourism in Pakistan, 17 women trekkers have successfully crossed treacherous trails, icy glaciers, and high-altitude passes to reach the Advance Base Camp of Tirich Mir, the highest peak in the Hindu Kush range. The group made history by advancing beyond Babu Base Camp, a feat previously accomplished only by male teams. The expedition, organized under the auspices of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Culture and Tourism Authority (KPCTA) in collaboration with the Tirich Mir Backpackers Club, brought together participants from diverse backgrounds — including one Kalasha woman, three from Chitral, four from Gilgit-Baltistan, and others from Balochistan, Islamabad, and various cities. They were supported by 36 local porters and three experienced guides. Adding a heartwarming chapter to the adventure, six-year-old Shiz Mir, son of a local guide, completed his first trek alongside the group. Starting their journey from Chitral, the women trekkers navigated a challenging route through Shughrum, Shenyak Camp, Byasam, and Astor Nall before reaching Babu Base Camp and pushing on to the Advance Base Camp. The route tested their endurance with fast-flowing streams, steep ascents, and unforgiving glaciers. Tirich Mir, standing 7,708 meters above sea level, is the crown jewel of the Hindu Kush. This year marks a historic moment as the KP government has declared 2025-26 "The Year of Tirich Mir" and is officially supporting a Pakistani mountaineering team's attempt on the summit for the first time. Previously, only two all-male teams had completed treks to the base camp via the Tirich Valley and Oweer Valley routes. The women's success now sets a new benchmark for gender representation in Pakistan's adventure tourism sector. Participants praised the KP government, KPCTA, and the Tirich Mir Backpackers Club for their excellent arrangements and support. They described the journey as both a rigorous physical challenge and a memorable display of teamwork. Officials hope the achievement will inspire more women to explore Pakistan's mountain landscapes and draw international mountaineers to Chitral Valley, further boosting the region's adventure tourism potential.

Northern tourism buckles under harsh weather

The landslides have uprooted several trees, which have fallen into the Kunhar River, spreading dust clouds and causing widespread fear among residents of Mahandri, Balakot. PHOTO: EXPRESS Where the recent pattern of heavy rains, landslides, and flash floods across Pakistan's northern regions has caused significant loss of life and property for the local population, it has also ruined the summer itineraries of several seasonal tourists from across various cities. According to the Meteorological Department, this monsoon season has brought far more rain than usual. In Chakwal alone, 423 mm of rainfall was recorded by mid-July, which is twice the multi-year average. Roads were blocked in Murree, Soon Valley, Kalabagh, and other locations, leaving dozens of tourists stranded while rescue operations too were severely hampered due to ongoing downpours. In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, at least 13 tourists drowned while spending time near the Swat river. The sudden rise in water levels and a lack of safety measures contributed to the tragedy. Similarly, in Gilgit-Baltistan's Diamer district, three people were killed and 15 reported missing due to landslides, while several sections of the Karakoram Highway were also closed. Following these dangerous incidents, a noticeable decline has been observed in the willingness of tourists to travel to the north. Imran Ahmed, a resident of Lahore, said, "We used to visit Murree or Kalam every year, but the recent tragedies are heartbreaking." Another citizen, Tariq Mahmood, shared, "While on the way to Soon Valley, we got reports of landslides and decided to return. These areas no longer feel safe." Experts believe that extreme weather, encroachments, and weak infrastructure are putting tourist destinations at serious risk hence amplifying the urgent need for the government to focus on early warning systems, emergency planning, and environmental protection. Nadeem Shehzad, a well-known tour operator from Lahore, confirmed that many tours were cancelled at the start of July due to unexpected weather conditions. "Tourists were instead offered safer alternatives, which most accepted. While the summer season is peak business time for the tourism industry, professional operators always prioritize the safety of their clients. Some unlicensed tour operators, however, use misleading social media content to encourage trips to high-risk areas, which can be life-threatening," informed Shehzad. In response to the situation, the Punjab Tourism Department has decided to introduce Tourism Quality Standards at all tourist spots. According to Tourism Secretary Raja Jahangir Anwar, health and safety protocols will be made mandatory at all destinations. Road construction will also be carried out in a way that minimizes the risk of landslides, while encroachments on drainage systems will also be removed. "Punjab has been divided into three tourism zones: northern regions (Murree, Kotli Sattian), natural lakes and rivers, and southern Punjab. Among these, the northern areas are the most vulnerable to weather-related risks. The Punjab government has allocated a tourism development budget of Rs18 billion for the first time, aimed at upgrading existing tourist spots, improving safety measures, and reviving new destinations," claimed Anwar. The Tourism Secretary further urged the public to check weather and security updates from the Tourism Department's website and the PDMA helpline before planning any trips, in order to avoid any unpleasant incidents.

Photo: Express Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said that starting January 1, 2026, Zaireen will only be allowed to travel to Iraq under officially registered group organisers. Pakistan, Iran and Iraq have agreed to establish a joint working group to streamline travel arrangements for pilgrims, following a trilateral conference of the countries' interior ministers held in Tehran on Monday. Naqvi, speaking at the meeting, thanked his Iranian counterpart Eskandar Momeni for hosting the conference at Pakistan's request, highlighting the growing need to address issues faced by pilgrims visiting Iran and Iraq. "Pilgrims travelling to Iraq and Iran are of great importance to us," he said. "This trilateral forum will pave the way for enhanced facilities and support." He said the registration process for "Zaireen Group Organisers" has begun, and only individuals granted special embassy-issued visas will be permitted to travel independently. "The organisers will be responsible for ensuring pilgrims' safe return," he said. "This system will help curb illegal travel and overstay issues." Naqvi also praised both the Iraqi and Iranian governments for their efforts in managing large pilgrim crowds. "Taking care of millions of Zaireen is a significant challenge, and both interior ministers are fulfilling this duty effectively," he said. He commended Iran's leadership during recent hostilities, saying, "Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stood firm and led with courage. We congratulate him and the Iranian people on this victory." Naqvi reiterated Pakistan's support for Iran during its recent conflict with Israel. "Pakistan unequivocally condemned the attack on Iran and supported its right to self-defence," he said, adding that both the Pakistani people and government stood firmly by Iran's side.
