PETALING JAYA: Badminton World Federation (BWF) will be under the leadership of Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, who has been appointed as president for the 2025-2029 term.
At the BWF annual general meeting in Xiamen on Saturday (April 26), Khunying, who also serves as the president of the Badminton Association of Thailand, was elected unopposed, succeeding Poul Erik Hoyer, who chose not to seek re-election.
Hoyer, the Olympic champion from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, had held the presidency since 2013, completing three consecutive terms. However, he chose not to stand for re-election due to health reasons.
With her appointment, Khunying becomes the fifth Asian and also the second woman to serve as BWF president, following in the footsteps of Ferry Sonnevilla (Indonesia, 1971-1974), Lu Shengrong (China, 1993-2001), Korn Dabbaransi (Thailand, 2001-2005), and Kang Young-joong (South Korea, 2015-2021).
Meanwhile, former Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria was elected as one of the BWF council members, representing Malaysia's voice in the sport's world body.

Athletics-Swede Duplantis soars to new pole vault world record with 6.28m jump
Athletics - Diamond League - Stockholm - Stockholm Olympic Stadium, Stockholm, Sweden - June 15, 2025 Sweden's Armand Duplantis with Usain Bolt before the competition Jonas Ekstromer/TT News Agency via REUTERS ATTENTION EDITORS - THIS IMAGE WAS PROVIDED BY A THIRD PARTY. SWEDEN OUT. NO COMMERCIAL OR EDITORIAL SALES IN SWEDEN. STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Sweden's Armand Duplantis soared 6.28 metres to break the world pole vault record at the Diamond League event in Stockholm on Sunday, the 12th time he has set a new world-best mark. The American-born double Olympic champion improved on his previous record, set in February, by one centimetre on his first attempt, making the most of the perfect conditions to delight the home crowd. Having promised fans ahead of the competition that he would try to break the record, Duplantis encouraged the crowd to get behind him from the moment his name was announced at the Swedish capital's Olympic stadium, which was built for the 1912 Games, and they responded by wildly clapping and cheering his every attempt as he cruised through the competition. Kurtis Marschall did his best to put it up to the hometown favourite, but the Australian could only manage a best effort of 5.90 before making three unsuccessful attempts to clear the six-metre mark. That left the field clear for Duplantisas the bar was raised to 6.28 for his world record attempt, and once again, the 25-year-old made it look easy, powering through his run-up before planting his pole and soaring to another world record as the stadium exploded in jubilation. Duplantis sprinted from the landing mat, tearing off his singlet to celebrate his first world record set on Swedish soil with his partner and family. In the women's 400m hurdles, Dutch athlete Femke Bol blazed away over the last 100 metres to win in a season-best time for her of 52.11 seconds, eight-tenths of a second ahead of American Dalilah Muhammad, who came second. Speedy Tigers roar back to hold Pakistan in Nations Cup
KUALA LUMPUR: Speedy Tigers twice clawed their way back to hold world No.15 Pakistan 3-3 in a thrilling Nations Cup Group B clash at the National Hockey Stadium on Sunday. It was world No.13 Malaysia's ninth draw against the Green Shirts since the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Pakistan, who came into the tournament without any warm-up matches, struck early through Ahmad Nadeem (sixth minute) and Abdul Rehman (ninth) while Ashraf Rana Waheed added a third in the 54th minute. But Malaysia refused to back down, roaring back with three goals in the final 11 minutes through Fitri Saari (49th) and Syed Syafiq Syed Cholan (52nd, 56th). National coach Sarjit Singh admitted his side were nervous, especially after a rain delay pushed back the start by over an hour. "My players showed great spirit to come back from 2-0 and 3-2 down to earn a point," said Sarjit. "We only played well in the third and fourth quarters, but I'm pleased with the players' work rate. "Every match counts, and hopefully, we start stronger against New Zealand tomorrow." Earlier, defending champions New Zealand edged Japan 2-1 after falling behind early. Ryosuke Shinohara opened the scoring in the fifth minute, but the Black Sticks hit back immediately through Sam Hiha, before Dylan Thomas netted the winner in the 56th minute.
