
Neanderthals bred with humans 100,000 YEARS earlier than first thought, scientists say - as they discover skeleton of five-year-old crossbreed
Experts have discovered that a five–year–old child who lived 140,000 years ago had parents from both species.
Their fossil – likely a female – was first unearthed 90 years ago in the Skhul Cave on Mount Carmel in what is now northern Israel.
A team from Tel Aviv University and the French Centre for Scientific Research conducted a series of advanced tests on the remaining bones, including a CT scan of the skull.
'Genetic studies over the past decade have shown that these two groups exchanged genes,' said lead author Professor Israel Hershkovitz.
'Even today, 40,000 years after the last Neanderthals disappeared, part of our genome—two to six per cent—is of Neanderthal origin.
'But these gene exchanges took place much later, between 60,000 to 40,000 years ago. Here, we are dealing with a human fossil that is 140,000 years old.
'In our study, we show that the child's skull, which in its overall shape resembles that of Homo sapiens—especially in the curvature of the skull vault—has an intracranial blood supply system, a lower jaw, and an inner ear structure typical of Neanderthals'
The finding makes the remains the earliest human fossil in the world to display features of both Neanderthals and Homo sapiens, the team say.
A recent study, also carried out by Professor Hershkovitz, showed that Neanderthals lived in what is modern–day Israel as far back as 400,000 years ago.
The new findings suggest they encountered early humans that began leaving Africa around 200,000 years ago.
This human–Neanderthal type, which researchers have called 'Nesher Ramla Homo' after the archaeological site where it was found – was the result of interbreeding between the two populations.
The child is, so far, the earliest evidence of the social and biological ties between these two populations over thousands of years.
The local Neanderthals eventually disappeared when they were absorbed into the Homo sapiens population, much like the later European Neanderthals.
'The fossil we studied is the earliest known physical evidence of mating between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens,' Professor Hershkovitz said.
'In 1998, a skeleton of a child was discovered in Portugal that showed traits of both of these human groups. But that skeleton, nicknamed the 'Lapedo Valley Child,' dates back 28,000 years ago—more than 100,000 years after the Skhul child.'
Until now, anthropologists have attributed the fossils discovered in the Skhul Cave to an early group of Homo sapiens.
'The current study reveals that at least some of the fossils from the Skhul Cave are the result of continuous genetic infiltration from the local—and older—Neanderthal population into the Homo sapiens population,' Professor Hershkovitz added.
The Daily Mail has previously spoken to scientists who explained that hybrid children would likely inherit traits from both of their parents.
That means hybrids might have a Neanderthal's long arms and short legs with the smaller skull of a Homo sapiens.
Likewise, some of the hybrid children may have had strong Neanderthal facial features but the upright posture and long legs of a modern human.
In some cases, this hybridisation process could even lead to the formation of unusual, new traits, not found in either parent.
Anne Dambricourt–Malassé, a paleoanthropologist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research and co–author of the study, said that this girl's skeleton tells us what hybrids might have looked like.
She explained that the girl had 'a powerful neck, a little higher than Homo sapiens, her forehead was less bulging.'

The girl also showed a 'slight subnasal prognathism', meaning that her jaw would have jutted out much like the famous 'Habsburg chin'.
Her spine shows that she would have had a more upright position than a Neanderthal, who typically walked with a curved back.
However, the girl's jaw, spine, and pelvis all bear features that appear to be more Neanderthal in their origin.
The new discovery was published in the journal l'Anthropologie.

The Neanderthals were a close human ancestor that mysteriously died out around 40,000 years ago.
The species lived in Africa with early humans for millennia before moving across to Europe around 300,000 years ago.
They were later joined by humans, who entered Eurasia around 48,000 years ago.
These were the original 'cavemen', historically thought to be dim-witted and brutish compared to modern humans.
In recent years though, and especially over the last decade, it has become increasingly apparent we've been selling Neanderthals short.
A growing body of evidence points to a more sophisticated and multi-talented kind of 'caveman' than anyone thought possible.
It now seems likely that Neanderthals had told, buried their dead, painted and even interbred with humans.
They used body art such as pigments and beads, and they were the very first artists, with Neanderthal cave art (and symbolism) in Spain apparently predating the earliest modern human art by some 20,000 years.
They are thought to have hunted on land and done some fishing. However, they went extinct around 40,000 years ago following the success of Homo sapiens in Europe.

SPACE bots are set to explore off-planet caves to set up new homes for humans. The robo-teams would work together to plunge into lava holes on Mars and the Moon - in search for new habitats for humans. 5 5 5 Research was recently carried out by a team of European academics who outlined the next-level mission in the journal Science Robotics. Their report shows tests carried out on the volcanic, Brit holiday Island of Lanzarote - chosen due to its environmental similarities with the Moon and Mars. The research team includes scientists from the robotics innovation centre at the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) DFKI said: "Lava caves on planetary bodies near Earth are promising sites for future base camps, offering natural protection from radiation and meteorite impacts. "Yet their exploration remains difficult due to harsh conditions and restricted access." Three different robot types worked together on their own to rapidly explore and map out the extreme Lanzarote environment including vast lava fields and numerous craters. While on their discovery mission, the robo-explorers found a skylight - a hole leading to an underground cave. The AI-gadgets took part in a four-step mission to map together the area around the hole, drop a sensor into the cave to collect data, descend a planetary surface exploration device and have it explore the cave independently to create a 3D map. The robot that was lowered into the cave was able to explore the difficult-to-enter area, and successfully generated a 3D model of the cave. Pulling off the application of such technologies in alien landscapes is a key breakthrough in the world of science and technology. DFKI said: "The results not only confirm the technical feasibility of the concept but also demonstrate the potential of collaborative robotic systems for use in future Moon or Mars missions. "The study thus provides valuable impetus for the further development of autonomous robotic solutions in the context of planetary exploration." The major milestone comes after research from 2024 which suggested future humans living on Mars will undergo drastic physical changes and may even develop into a new sub-species, an expert has told The Sun. Kyle Zagrodzky, founder of OsteoStrong, a company that specialises in bone health, explained that an unforgiving Martian environment could push humans to evolve into haunting versions of their "Earthling cousins". At first, Mars-bound astronauts will feel pretty good, according to Zagrodzky, as the lower level of gravity eases the weight on their bones and joints. NASA reveals Uranus has a secret moon
More than one billion miles away from Earth, Uranus is one of the least explored planets in our solar system. So it comes as no surprise that scientists still regularly make new discoveries about the ice giant planet. This week, NASA has uncovered a secret moon hiding in Uranus' orbit. The moon – which is yet to be named – was discovered using the James Webb Space Telescope, and is believed to be around six miles wide. To put that into perspective, that's around 350 times smaller than our own moon! The discovery expands the total known number of moons orbiting Uranus to 29. 'No other planet has as many small inner moons as Uranus, and their complex inter–relationships with the rings hint at a chaotic history that blurs the boundary between a ring system and a system of moons,' said Matthew Tiscareno of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, a member of the research team. 'Moreover, the new moon is smaller and much fainter than the smallest of the previously known inner moons, making it likely that even more complexity remains to be discovered.' NASA first spotted the new moon during an observation of Uranus on 2 February 2025. 'This object was spotted in a series of 10 40–minute long–exposure images captured by the Near–Infrared Camera (NIRCam),' explained Dr Maryame El Moutamid, a lead scientist in SwRI's Solar System Science and Exploration Division based in Boulder, Colorado. 'It's a small moon but a significant discovery, which is something that even NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft didn't see during its flyby nearly 40 years ago.' The moon is the 14th small moon found to orbit Uranus' larger moons – Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon (named after characters from Shakespeare and Alexander Pope). 'It's located about 35,000 miles (56,000 kilometers) from Uranus' center, orbiting the planet's equatorial plane between the orbits of Ophelia (which is just outside of Uranus' main ring system) and Bianca,' Dr El Moutamid added. 'Its nearly circular orbit suggests it may have formed near its current location.' The planets in our solar system have different numbers of moons – ranging from 0 to 274. Neither Mercury nor Venus have any moons, while you probably already know that Earth has just one. Mars has two moons named Phobos and Deimos, and Jupiter has 95 – including the biggest moon in our solar system, Ganymede.
