Over one million people sign up for 2026 London Marathon
The number of applications for the 2026 race's ballot shattered last year's world record of 840,300 entries for the 2025 London Marathon.
'This is an absolutely staggering total which reaffirms London as by far the most popular marathon on the planet,' said Hugh Brasher, CEO of organisers London Marathon Events.
Applications for the 2026 race are nearly double the total for the 2024 London Marathon, organisers said after the ballot closed on Friday.
Last Sunday's 45th renewal also snatched the Guinness World Records title for largest number of finishers from the 2024 New York Marathon.
Over 56,500 athletes crossed the finish line in blazing sunshine in the British capital, from the elite field through to those in fancy dress.
New York had some 55,600 finishers. Last month's Paris Marathon had 56,950 starters but fewer finishers.
The women's elite race also provided the spectators with a memory to treasure, Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa setting a new women's only world record of 2hr 15min 50sec.
According to organisers, the 2025 race raised over £75 million (RM425.3 million) for charities, with participants fundraising for various causes. – AFP

Marc Marquez wins Austrian MotoGP for sixth straight victory
MARC MARQUEZ claimed his first-ever victory at the Red Bull Ring in the Austrian MotoGP. The Ducati rider secured his ninth win of the season, further solidifying his lead in the championship standings. Starting fourth on the grid, Marquez overtook pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi on lap 20 before pulling away for his sixth straight win. Rookie Fermin Aldeguer pushed hard in the closing laps but settled for second, marking his best career finish. Bezzecchi completed the podium in third place after a strong performance. 'Super happy to finally take the first victory here in Austria,' said Marquez. The win also marked a milestone as it came in the 1000th MotoGP race. Marquez had earlier won the sprint race on Saturday despite a poor qualifying session. At 32, he now moves closer to a potential seventh world title, his first since 2019. With 13 rounds completed, Marquez leads his brother Alex by 142 points in the standings. Marquez made a strong start, passing Alex on the first turn and teammate Francesco Bagnaia on lap two. A strategic battle with Bezzecchi followed before Marquez made his decisive move with eight laps remaining. Aldeguer briefly challenged Marquez but ultimately secured second place. 'I waited and attacked near the end,' Marquez explained. Alex Marquez struggled after serving a long-lap penalty for an incident in the Czech MotoGP. He dropped to 11th and finished 10th, unable to recover his position. Reigning champion Jorge Martin crashed out on lap 15, continuing his difficult season. Martin, who will stay with Aprilia next year, has faced multiple setbacks due to injuries. The next race will take place in Hungary next weekend. - AFP

Japan's Iwai grabs lead at LPGA Portland Classic
LOS ANGELES: Japanese rookie Akie Iwai fired a eight-under par 64 to seize a two-stroke lead after Saturday's third round of the LPGA Portland Classic. The 23-year-old from Saitama, seeking her first LPGA victory, made seven birdies and an eagle against a lone bogey to stand on 18-under 198 after 54 holes at Edgewater Country Club. Australia's Grace Kim, who captured her first major title at the Evian Championship, made a stunning eagle at the 17th, holing out from 156 yards from the fairway rough to shoot 67 and grab second on 200. World number 29 Iwai, an LPGA runner-up this year at Thailand and the LA Championship, has won six times on the Japan Tour. "After I made the eagle at five, I had many birdie chances, so good tempo," Iwai said. "My style is aggressive. No change this week. Aim to the pin. Every shot. Every hole." That was apparent at the 18th hole, where she dropped her approaches inches from the hole and tapped in for her fourth birdie on the back nine. After answering a bogey at the par-three second hole with a birdie at the third, Iwai eagled the par-five fifth followed by back-to-back birdies at six and the par-five seventh. She began the back nine with birdies at the par-five 10th and 12th holes and added another at the par-three 13th to reach 17-under and lead by three strokes. Kim went four-under over the last five holes to charge into the second with birdies at 14 and 15 and her eagle at 17 the shot of the round. She looked away after the ball landed in the rough, not seeing it bounce onto the green, roll down a slope and into the hole for an eagle. "I leaked my driver a little right," Kim said. "I thought I was going to be in the rough, which it was, and I was trying to see if I could get a drop. I wasn't entirely over the sprinkler head boxes so I knew I just had to hit it. "It leaked right again and I was like, 'Oh please get through the rough,' and somehow it went in the hole so I guess it's a little bit of luck in there." Sweden's Linn Grant took third on 202 with a 65, one stroke ahead of American Gurleen Kaur with India's Aditi Ashok and American Gina Kim on 204. "I had a good round out there," Grant said. "Tried to go out and just be, I wouldn't say happy, but just accepting of whatever today would bring. I played very mature and just had a lot of fun." South Korea's Lee5 Jeong-eun led after 36 holes but made a triple bogey at the par-four sixth hole to fall eight off the pace. — AFP
