NYC student reading, math scores increase amid curriculum overhaul: test data

NEW YORK — More New York City public school students are considered 'proficient readers' after two years of major curriculum reforms, according to state test scores released Monday.
About 56.3% of third- through eighth-graders met the state's bar for proficiency on English Language Arts exams in the spring — a 7.2 percentage-point increase since the year before. The results erased what officials referred to as last year's 'implementation dip' as students and teachers adjusted to the new curriculum.
In math, 56.9% of students scored proficient or better, up by 3.5 percentage points.
With the major gains, the city's students slightly outperformed the state in both reading and math. The Adams administration touted the proficiency rates as the system's highest in more than a decade, though experts caution against making comparisons to pre-2023 data, when ELA and math tests were aligned to new standards.
'While, of course, I am thrilled that we saw these kinds of increases, it's no time to rest,' Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos said during an exclusive interview with the Daily News. 'What these numbers tell us is that we're on the right track. … That there's a lot of work to still do.'
At the start of the 2023-24 school year, the city's public schools, under then-Chancellor David Banks, began standardizing reading curriculum as part of a literacy initiative known as 'NYC Reads.' Elementary schools were required to use one of three preapproved reading programs with a focus on evidence-based literacy instruction and phonics, which were implemented over two school years.
On last year's reading exams, students who had more exposure to the curriculum tended to fare better than kids newer to the initiative. NYC Reads Phase 1 schools saw a higher increase from 48.1% to 59.7% — 11.6 percentage points in grades 3-5 — compared with districts in Phase 2, which increased 10.4 percentage points from 47.0% to 57.5%.
A parallel effort is underway to standardize math curriculum in middle and high schools. While both the reading and math initiatives have been tweaked over the last year in response to teacher feedback, the Adams administration has promised to see them through. By the 2027-28 school year, Mayor Eric Adams, if reelected, has said all middle schools will be required to use city-approved programs in literacy and math.
'These academic gains in English Language Arts and math are a testament to what's possible when we invest in our young people and believe in their potential,' Adams said in a statement.
The new scores come as Adams, who sat out the Democratic primary as he came up against since-dropped federal corruption charges, faces an uphill battle to reelection. Many of the mayor's most serious challengers have praised his focus on improving literacy, and the positive trend in last year's results could motivate a possible successor to stay the course.
'If the next administration sustains and expands this work, the best is yet to come!' said Banks, the former chancellor.
Among the most promising signs in Monday's data were great strides by the city's youngest test takers. Third-grade students, who learned to read under the new regime and were spared COVID-19 school lockdowns, saw their ELA scores rise by 12.9 percentage points.
Kim Sweet, executive director of Advocates for Children of New York, called third-graders' advances on reading exams a particularly 'hopeful signal that we are headed in the right direction.'
'At the same time,' Sweet said, 'the continued disparities by economic need, race/ethnicity, and disability status make clear that many students need extra support to become strong readers.'
In math, Black and Hispanic students made the largest gains over the school year, but at 43% remain far below proficiency rates for white and Asian students: 75% and 81%, respectively. In reading, Black students made the largest gains, but still at a 47% proficiency rate compared with 73% for white students.
Just 29% of students with disabilities were proficient in math and under 27% in reading.
Overall, the results reinforced early progress shown this year on academic 'screeners' — fast assessments that are less comprehensive, but administered more frequently than the annual state exams. The screeners are used by teachers in real time to identify students in need of extra help.
Aviles-Ramos said a major focus over the summer has been improving how teachers provide targeted support on top of classroom instruction for students who need it most.
'If that's not enough for you to understand the goal of the lesson, then sometimes you need that extra support, that intervention,' Aviles-Ramos said. 'Those practices have not necessarily been standardized — teachers do that work on their own.'
'We want to take the guesswork out of that,' added the chancellor, comparing it to taking the guesswork out of classroom instruction through curriculum mandates.

When my children were small and my life was a sleep-deprived struggle to navigate the chaos and tantrums of daily life, all I could dream of was the day when I could leave the baby years behind and finally get my life back. Now my children are almost fully fledged adults. They drive, they make their own breakfast, they have their own plans and lives. But the freedom I envisaged for so long has turned out to be elusive, as, just at the time my teens may need me less, it is my parents who need me more. I'm part of the sandwich generation My parents are both now well into their 80s. There is an increasing number of doctor's appointments to worry about, mysterious chest pains or dizzy spells to lose sleep over, and the less tangible sadness of seeing them every time a little bit frailer, a fraction less in charge. And while my teens may physically need me less, their financial needs have grown exponentially. Now there is college to be paid for, gas to fill up their cars, contributions toward rent and phone bills, vacations I want them to go on with their friends, and concerts I want them to experience. As we are living longer than ever, and having children later, more and more of us find ourselves part of the sandwich generation, worrying simultaneously about ageing parents while supporting our not-quite-grown-up children. For my husband and me, it means we won't be getting a glimpse of a carefree life anytime soon. It used to be a baby's cry that would have us stumbling out of bed in the small hours, grumbling and half-crazed with lack of sleep. Now it is the fear of the dreaded 3 a.m. phone call that keeps us awake, that could equally come from an older parent relaying a panicked visit to the ER or a desperate teenager, stranded at the side of the road with a flat tyre. I'm not getting any younger At the same time, additional grit in the sandwich filling is the fact that my husband and I, too, are not getting any younger. When we had babies, we were young, fit, and full of energy. Our young bodies and minds could cope with sleepless nights and late-night dashes to the ER. We had no competing claims on being needed. Now our middle-aged bodies and minds are tug-of-war in two directions. My husband is now completely grey; he ignores his rising blood pressure, I ignore an aching hip, disobedient hormones, and brain fog. Always being 'on call' takes its toll. We can never truly switch off. We can't throw caution to the wind, turn off our phones, or go off-grid for a day; there may be an old or a young person who needs us. I carry a lot of guilt There is also the guilt. Mother's guilt and daughter's guilt. However much I do for my children, could I do more? Am I a good enough mom, am I too much a friend, not enough a parent, should I have cried in front of the kids, should their dad and I have argued in front of them? What about the time I got blackout drunk at a party and they saw me puke in the driveway? An endless list of self-flagellation that every parent will recognise. At the same time, the daughter's guilt. Am I visiting my parents enough? Am I calling enough? Should I be running daily casseroles over to them? Should I be insisting they wear a personal alarm that directly alerts the emergency services? And if I'm honest, I feel guilt at the anger I feel when I see them getting older and weaker. Anger at them for allowing themselves to age, allowing themselves to one day be taken from us. And yet, and yet. Like all things, there is also a bittersweet joy nestled in the discomfort. There is nothing like the feeling of having our three generations all together in that moment. The three boys, son, dad, and grandad watching a cricket match. The women, my daughter, I, and my mom watching a movie and crying at the same part. In these moments, there is such utter joy and love. In these moments, the sandwich has never tasted so sweet . The Power Tower breakdown at Cedar Point is the latest in a series of malfunctions at the Sandusky, Ohio, theme park. In the most recent incident, one of the ride's cables snapped, leaving riders stranded in the air. The Power Tower rockets riders 240 feet in the air before dropping them back to the ground. And that's not the only instance of ride malfunctions at Cedar Point. Siren's Curse, the park's newest roller coaster, has been evacuated several times when the tilt coaster got stuck. Top Thrill 2 was closed for repairs in June, despite being shut down for nearly all of the 2024 season for modifications. And the Raptor has been closed since Aug. 4. Here's a look at the recent breakdowns. Cable snaps on Power Tower, leaving riders stranded In the Power Tower incident, park spokesman Tony Clark said a single cable detached from the ride vehicle on one of the towers on Aug. 10, the Beacon Journal reported. The ride's safety performed as expected, he said. Cedar Point workers manually lowered riders to the ground, where all safely exited. No injuries were reported. "Safety is a top priority, and the ride will remain closed while we complete a thorough review and inspection of the ride," Clark said. Bryan Levin of the Ohio Department of Agriculture's Division of Amusement Ride Safety & Fairs said the Power Tower will remain closed until the state does a complete reinspection of the ride. Siren's Curse roller coaster strands riders, evacuated at least 5 times At least five times now, Siren's Curse — which has been open since the end of June — has stranded passengers at the top of its 160-foot lift hill, forcing either an evacuation or a delay as the coaster was restarted, the Beacon Journal previously reported. Twice, riders were stranded on tilt portion of the coaster, which tips a piece of track 90 degrees down before continuing the ride. One of those times the riders pointed straight down. Clark said the coaster had been experiencing minor technical issues, which he compared to the check engine light in a car, resulting in the safety system halting the ride. If the safety system can be reset, the ride continues. If not, riders are evacuated. One coaster enthusiast and mechanical engineer, who has written books on the science of coasters, said the safety systems on Siren's Curse are performing as they should. "It's important to understand that thrill rides are over-engineered for fail-safe performance," Nick Weisenberger said. "There are hundreds of sensors and they all have to agree; otherwise, the ride stops out of an abundance of caution." Top Thrill 2, closed for most of 2024 season, shut down for 'mechanical reasons' in June 2025 Top Thrill 2, which made its debut in 2024 but closed after only eight days, reopened this season but still has had a few issues crop up. In June, the roller coaster shut down for unspecified "mechanical reasons," Clark said at the time. According to a Reddit "ask me anything" on June 8, an anonymous Cedar Point ride mechanic, whose identity Reddit moderators verified, said a crack was found on a support. A crane, spotted by an X user, was brought out to repair it. "There was a decent size crack found on a support post on the spike," the Reddit user wrote. "That's the only reason we have a crane on site, for the welders to address the crack found. Once they finish the fix and the state okays it, the ride should be back to operational orders." Another Top Thrill 2 closure happened on the park's opening day, May 3, when the coaster didn't have enough power to get its train over the hill, resulting in an extra rollback. One rollback on Top Thrill 2 is by design. The coaster first launches its trains forward; they run out of momentum on the 420-foot hill and roll back toward the start. Then, the train is launched backward up a vertical track. When that runs out of momentum, the train rolls forward toward the start, where a third launch finally sends it over the tophat hill at 120 mph. According to the statistics at Ride Forces Database, Top Thrill 2 has been operational for 64.3% of the time Cedar Point has been open in 2025. Social media reports Valravn evacuated, Millennium Force stuck Sporadic reports of other coaster closures have popped up on social media. On Reddit, a user posted a photo of people descending the spiral staircase from Valravn on Aug. 7. The website Queue Times, which reports when rides are open or closed as well as the wait times based on user submissions and reports from the theme park itself, shows an nearly two-hour closure for Valravn, from 2:10 to 3:50 p.m., that day, and sporadic closures otherwise. Another Reddit user posted a photo stating Millennium Force was stuck at the top of the hill on Aug. 8. However, Queue Times shows only sporadic closures for the ride that day, which opened around 9:15 a.m. and closed shortly after 10 p.m. Reddit users complain about number of coasters that are down Other Reddit posts complain about the number of coasters that were closed on specific days. One claims seven were down on Aug. 3, while another posted a screenshot from Queue Times showing closures and significant delays at the majority of coasters. According to Queue Times, Top Thrill 2 and Rougarou were closed the full day on Aug. 3, with Raptor open briefly. GateKeeper opened late, around 3 p.m. And on Aug. 4, Raptor, Rougarou and Top Thrill 2 were closed the full day. Gemini, Pipe Scream and Wild Mouse opened late that day, with the other coasters opening between 9:30 and 11 a.m. and only closed sporadically throughout the day, per Queue Times. Rougarou was closed from July 31 to Aug. 7, per the website. And, Raptor has been closed since Aug. 4. Cedar Point's spokesman said the park is waiting on a part, and the ride should reopen soon.
