Kerala rapper Vedan (Hirandas Murali) and eight others were arrested by the Hill Palace police after around 6 gm of suspected ganja was recovered from their apartment near Vytilla in Kochi on Monday afternoon.
Vedan found himself in trouble shortly afterwards over a tiger claw on his chain following which the police alerted the Kodanad forest range office. Vedan reportedly confessed to have procured it from Thailand leaving him susceptible to another case for illegal possession of wildlife article by the Forest department.
A team of forest officials led by Kodanad range officer soon rushed to the Hill Palace police station. 'We will arrest him on non-bailable charges and take him to Kodanad for interrogation,' Forest department sources said.
The rapper and his group, the Hill Palace police said, had been under surveillance for sometime. The police seized around ₹9.50 lakh, which the accused claimed to be their fee for a stage programme held on Sunday, and their mobile phones.
'The ganja was not seized from anyone's personal procession but was found on a table in the apartment. We are aware of the source of ganja but cannot reveal it at this point,' police sources said.
Later, the accused were taken for medical examination. They were released on station bail since the suspected ganja involved was of small quantity. Vedan's programme scheduled in Idukki to mark the State government's fourth anniversary was cancelled in view of the incident.
Kodanad forest range sources said Vedan would have to be interrogated to verify whether hunting or trading was involved behind the tiger claw in his possession.
A native of Thrissur, Vedan's Voice of the Voiceless rap video was a hit online. He had also collaborated with music director Sushin Shyam for the promo song Kuthanthram for the hit film Manjummel Boys.

It seems like Tamil superstar Suriya is adding more projects to his already packed schedule. The actor is currently working on his films with RJ Balaji and Venky Atluri. Moreover, the actor also has Vaadivaasal with ace filmmaker Vetri Maaran in the line-up. Now, the latest is that the actor is reportedly in talks with Malayalam director Jithu Madhavan, best known for helming films like Romancham and Aavesham, for an upcoming film. According to a report by Cinema Express, the director has confirmed that he's in negotiations with the star. Other details remain unknown at the moment. This comes just days after Suriya began shooting for his upcoming movie with director Venky Atluri, tentatively called Suriya 46. The film features Mamitha Baiju as the female lead. Interestingly, Suriya also has the long-awaited Vaadivaasal in the line-up. Kalaipuli S Thanu, the producer of the movie, had told The Hindu in Aprilthat the film will get rolling from June; however, there hasn't been any update on the film as of now. Vedan's song included in Calicut University syllabus

The University of Calicut has included Bhoomi Njan Vaazhunna idam, a Malayalam rap song by rapper and songwriter Hirandas Murali, aka Vedan, in the syllabus of the fourth-semester undergraduate Malayalam Language and Literature course. A powerful commentary on global issues, the song has been included in Introduction to Comparative Literature, under the module Puthu Pravanathakal (new trends). Bhoomi Njan Vaazhunna Idam is a rap song that reflects on global crises, from the Syrian war and Palestinian genocide to the death of Aylan Kurdi and the brutal murder of Asifa in Kashmir. The lyrics goes like Bhoomi njaan vaazhunnidam anudinam narakamaayi maarunnidam... (Earth is where I bide, which is closer to hell with each passing day...), highlighting the collective suffering of the people of the world. It will be taught alongside Michael Jackson's They Don't Care about Us, which tackles racial injustice, as part of a comparative study of Malayalam and American rap cultures. Vedan who came to the limelight with his debut music video Voice of the Voiceless in 2020, is widely known for his politically charged lyrics, often rooted in his identity as a Dalit man and reflecting the struggles of the marginalised. 'Today's culture is predominantly shaped by digital media, and it is important to incorporate these changes into the curriculum,' said M.B. Manoj, head of Malayalam and Kerala Studies department, University of Calicut. Inclusion of songs 'Many tend to oppose the inclusion of songs in the Malayalam literature syllabus, but to ignore them is to resist cultural shifts. By including these works, we encourage students to critically engage with them rather than remain passive viewers,' he said, stressing the importance of adapting to the changing times. The module also includes comparative study of Kathakali Padam (Kathakali song) Ajita Hare... Madhava by Muringur Shankaran Potti and its modern rendition Ajita Hare by Gouri Lakshmi, analysing how classical art forms have evolved in the current era. Dr. Manoj said that the department had also included Malayalam film songs in its multidisciplinary course (MDC) Cinemayum Sahithyavum (Cinema and Literature), featuring tracks ranging from the classic Pennale Pennale... from Chemmeen to Nadin Nanmakane Ponmakane Muthayavane... from the 2024 film Aavesham.
