UFC 317: Beneil Dariush 'extremely disappointed' Islam Makhachev moved to welterweight
LAS VEGAS – Beneil Dariush admits he had to do a mental reset after Islam Makhachev announced his move to welterweight.
Dariush saw Makhachev as a prime target and huge motivation in his stride toward the top of the lightweight division, but his tenure will officially come to an end Saturday at UFC 317 when a new 155-pound titleholder is crowned between Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira at T-Mobile Arena (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).
On the main card of the event, Dariush will take on Renato Moicano, who got the opportunity for his long-eluded fight against Makhachev when he stepped into January's UFC 311 headliner on one days' notice after Arman Tsarukyan fell out.
Now that fight is seemingly entirely out of his grasp, and Dariush admits that reality was tough to cope with.
"I was extremely disappointed," Dariush told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday's UFC 317 media day. "While I was on the win streak, and then also again possible in January, I thought I was going to get picked to fight him. And I was feeling really good in January, and it didn't happen. It was tough. We really had to work through that one."
"I think he's going to do well. I think it'll more striking than grappling. (Jack Della Maddalena's) defense seems really solid and he's going to continue to work on it and I think actually the easier path will be striking for Makhachev."
After the fight between them was called off at UFC 311, Dariush and Moicano will finally meet this weekend. And with it taking place on the same night a there will be a reset and new champion, there's a chance to make a stateent.
"I think I'm better than him everywhere. I'm pretty sure wherever the grappling goes, I'll be fine," Dariush said. "I think I could be one or two fights away from the belt again, hopefully."

Texas Labeled Most 'Overvalued Team' in College Football
Texas Labeled Most 'Overvalued Team' in College Football originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Texas Longhorns are going to look much different this year after the losses of quarterback Quinn Ewers, offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., receiver Matthew Golden, and others to the NFL. Advertisement Texas' regular-season win total for 2025 is set at 10.5, via ESPN BET. However, not everyone is as sure that the Longhorns will win as many games. ESPN's Joe Fortenbaugh went on a recent edition of "Get Up" and urged people to take the under, calling Texas the most "overvalued team" in college football. Arch Manning is expected to take over for Ewers after backing up the star quarterback for the last two seasons. "The win total's 10.5. You're only playing 12 games. Conference championships. Playoffs. That stuff doesn't count. I bet the under. All we need are two losses." Advertisement Head coach Steve Sarkisian has led the Longhorns to consecutive College Football Playoff appearances in the last two seasons. The last time Texas finished with under 10 wins in the Sarkisian era was 2022, when it went 8-5. On top of a trip to the playoff, the Longhorns also reached the SEC Championship Game in their first season in the conference. Texas lost 22-19 in overtime to the Georgia Bulldogs and claimed the No. 5 seed in the CFP. Fortenbaugh is not the only one to doubt Texas recently. The Longhorns' 2026 class was ranked sixth in the SEC by On3 Sports. However, it has not been all bad. Texas gained some ground with five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo after he canceled his official visit with the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas' First Loss of 2025 College Football Season Predicted
Texas' First Loss of 2025 College Football Season Predicted originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Texas Longhorns are 38-17 under head coach Steve Sarkisian since he took the job in 2021. During that time, Sarkisian has taken Texas to one bowl game and appeared in the College Football Playoff twice. However, some are skeptical about Texas in 2025. Advertisement ESPN's Joe Fortenbaugh joined a recent episode of "Get Up" to discuss regular-season win totals for college football. He predicted Texas to lose its season opener against the Ohio State Buckeyes on August 30. Ohio State ended Texas' season, handing the Longhorns a 28-14 loss in the semifinal of the playoff. Brazziell/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images "All we need are two losses," Fortenbaugh said. "I see them losing to Ohio State to open the season, and then as you work your way down, there are plenty of problems. Road game at Florida. Road game at Georgia. Fourth-toughest schedule in the nation. So yea, I think this is a team that's very overvalued." Advertisement Fortenbaugh even called Texas the most overvalued team in college football, referring to their 10.5 regular-season win total as reported by ESPN BET. The roster in Austin is going to look quite different in 2025. Texas lost players like quarterback Quinn Ewers, offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., receiver Matthew Golden and defensive back Jahdae Barron to the 2025 NFL Draft. Former No. 1 overall recruit from the 2023 class, Arch Manning, will finally get his shot to win the quarterback job for the Longhorns. He played in 10 games last season, with two starts. Manning led his team to wins over UL Monroe and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Advertisement Rarely is Manning not the topic of conversation regarding Texas. That was the case with Heisman sleeper predictions by college football analyst Michael Bratton. He picked running back Tre Wisner as a sleeper for the award. Texas and Ohio State have played each other four times, with the series split evenly at 2-2. The Longhorns have a chance for revenge on August 30 at noon ET on Fox. Aaron Rodgers Trashes Fans And Media As '(Expletive) Entitled, Ridiculous and Embarrassing'
Aaron Rodgers Trashes Fans And Media As '(Expletive) Entitled, Ridiculous and Embarrassing' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Twenty years in the NFL and a Cal education and an intellect he's fond of flaunting and quarterback Aaron Rodgers still doesn't get it. Advertisement Green Bay Packers fans enjoyed his four MVP's but they know the bit. New York Jets fans just saw him "lead'' them to a 5-12 season, so they learned. Now that Rodgers, at 41 off to Pittsburgh as the starting QB of the Steelers in 2025 before retirement, one more fan base is about to figure it out. Rodgers, who is said to be worth $200 million as a result of being in the NFL spotlight, just made a recent appearance of the Pat McAfee show on ESPN (which last time we checked pays him $1 million annually to appear) and he used the platform to blast those who seek information about his personal life and professional life. Advertisement Take it away, Aaron ... "The entitlement to information about my private life is so (expletive) ridiculous and embarrassing,"Rodgers said. "Like, hey, do what you've got to do, but try and leave me out of a conversation, sports world, for a month. Try and just leave me out, my personal life, my professional life, try not to talk about me ... for the next six weeks, five weeks, whatever it is. "Just see if you can do that." Our reply? No. We cannot do that. We can't do it because it is our job to chronicle All Thing Aaron, from the highs in Green Bay to when he tore his Achilles in the first quarter of his first game with the Jets to last season when he recorded an empty total of 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns to now, when he is a pivot point of the Steelers' playoff hopes. Advertisement Rodgers, like many celebrities, wants it both ways. The fame and the fortune, but only on their terms. "Privacy'' while dating actresses and supermodels and starring in a TV show (see "Enigma.'') A "don't look at me'' attitude while - in Aaron Rodgers' case - pitching loony life philosophies and conjuring up offensive conspiracy theories and considering a run for The White House. ou want to play QB in the NFL but you want to do it in hiding? Really? There are boundaries of respect, and if fans and reporters are hiding in the bushes of celebrities' backyards? Yeah, that's "entitlement, ridiculous and embarrassing.'' Advertisement And illegal. But short of that? The hypocritical truth, as Rodgers insists that when his NFL career is over, "You won't see me.''? ""When this is all done, it's Keyser Söze. You won't see me," referring to the secretive villain in "The Usual Suspects." "I won't be in the public. I don't want to live a public life. ... I'm not going to be in the public eye. When this is done, I'm done, and you won't see me. And I'm looking forward to that." In a very real sense, Aaron? We're kind of looking forward to that, too.
