Ubisoft backflips, says Assassin's Creed Shadows will support Steam Deck at launch, but I doubt I'll actually want to play it there

Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin's Creed Shadows will run on Steam Deck at launch, which is great albeit unexpected news. It's unexpected, because last month Ubisoft ruled out Steam Deck support, pointing out—quite reasonably—that Valve's handheld is "below our minimum specs for PC".
So what's changed? Presumably the studio has done some testing, tweaked some knobs, and discovered that the game does actually run. "We are happy to say that we are supporting Steam Deck at launch and are currently awaiting the level of classification from Valve," the official Assassin's Creed X account wrote. "More info to come soon."
Steam Deck OLED released in November 2023 and is holding up astonishingly well. It runs Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and a bunch of other recent blockbusters I certainly didn't expect it would run. That's impressive work for a handheld device, and equally impressive work from the developers who manage to make their games work on it.
But will Assassin's Creed Shadows be fun to play on Steam Deck? I am doubtful. Those aforementioned heavyhitters are both "Verified" Steam Deck games, but they're clearly made for larger screens and beefier rigs. It's cool that they run, but it's pretty hard to enjoy them when they look closer to moving Claude Monet paintings than modern videogames. They're smeared, jerky, and overall suboptimal. Maybe I'm being picky, but I usually find I'm less picky than other PC gamers.
Still, if Steam Deck is your only gaming device—and I feel like that's a growing category of player—Assassin's Creed Shadows is on the menu. It's great to see studios actually addressing the still-small but growing handheld market directly, too. Will Assassin's Creed Shadows factor into our list of the best Steam Deck games? Time will tell, but if you ask me, the device is perfect for most indies, CRPGs (those track pads), and Vampire Survivors.

Sony isn't worried about the Switch 2 being the fastest-selling piece of Nintendo hardware ever, because you need the PS5 for "a great experience on big screens"

The new console's arrival is sending ripples through the industry, but Sony isn't concerned, because the PlayStation 5 hardware is simply on another level. Hideaki Nishino, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, was asked about Nintendo's latest system and whether there were any concerns about what it offers during a recent business segment meeting. He starts by mentioning that competition is good, and companies successfully launching products is good for everyone, before taking a more pointed stance. "We have a differentiated strategy. PS5 is designed for an immersive gaming experience, and this includes the innovative DualSense controller features as well," he says. "We believe PS5-level performance is required to achieve a great experience on big screens. And in this way, we have provided a unique offering for players and creators in this current console generation." In the face of increasing multi-platform releases, Nishino reiterates the goal of making the PS5 the finest option for creative teams looking to reach a wide audience. "We have empowered our creators to leverage our offering and services to create amazing, unique experiences for players with high engagement and great monetization opportunities," he explains. "We have done this consistently as the industry and competitive dynamics have evolved. And of course, PlayStation Studios, our franchises, have a special role in showcasing the PlayStation experience and then strengthening the player's vision with us." With the likes of God of War and The Last of Us, Sony has managed to maintain its exclusives remarkably well, breeding a particular kind of loyalty in the process. These games do court an older fanbase than the home of Super Mario and Zelda aims for, but Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, believes they have something for everyone. "In addition to our franchises with more, I would call it 'multi-generational' fanbases, such as Marvel's Spider-Man, we also have franchises that appeal to a range of different player segments. Horizon is a good example, it's been very popular with female players, Astro Bot from our lovely Team Asobi in Tokyo, it's been a hit with children and adults alike," he explained. There are pros and cons to every machine and platform. There's still only one place you can play Mario Kart, and it's not where Kratos lives, but you're unlikely to see The Last of Us 3 anywhere near the Switch 2 either. Meanwhile, the Switch 2 is built with portability in mind, whereas the PS5 favors cinematic, at-home playing. It's all about finding what suits you. You might not realise it, but this is Netflix's biggest show – and it got a huge teaser

Normally, you'd expect a TV show's popularity to peak after a few seasons – maybe a little earlier, but shows generally need at least one season to build up a fanbase and demonstrate to viewers that they're heading somewhere special. That thinking could apply to streaming shows just as easily as traditional broadcasts. It's a thought that was completely up-ended by Wednesday's first season, though, which did absolutely astronomical numbers on Netflix and sits pretty atop its list of the most popular shows it's ever released at the time of writing. Its first season has accrued over 252,100,000 views, which is insane for the launch of a franchise. Now, a second season is imminent, and might well do even bigger numbers. At its Tudum event last weekend, Netflix unveiled the first six minutes of that new season, and if you're a fan you're absolutely going to want to check it out. It shows our heroine, played by the now-iconic Jenna Ortega, coming to her senses while locked in one of the creepier situations you could imagine. She's tied up at the dinner table of a notorious serial killer she was trying to track down, arrayed alongside a wide range of weird dolls. A flashback fills us in on how she got there, including an amusing skit of how someone like her gets through airline security procedures (by giving up a lot of her more lethal kit, in short). She finds the killer, played by none other than Haley Joel Osment in a very fun wig, but is incapacitated by him fairly quickly. It's a spirited start to the season, and one that looks potentially a little darker than the previous run of episodes. That said, it's also only six minutes, so you'll still very much want to tune in when the real season drops in two halves. The first arrives on 6 August, then the rest come on 3 September.

Judas Priest kick off Painkiller anniversary tour with rarities-stacked setlist

Judas Priest kicked off their Shield Of Pain European run at Rockfest in Turku, Finland on Thursday (June 12). The Birmingham heavy metal veterans debuted a severely shaken-up setlist at the festival, playing seven songs from 1990 album Painkiller as they celebrate its 35th anniversary. They also brought out two previously unperformed tracks from last year's Invincible Shield. The Painkiller cuts were as follows: All Guns Blazing (unplayed since 2019), Hell Patrol, A Touch Of Evil, Night Crawler (unplayed since 2012), One Shot At Glory (with the instrumental Battle Hymn as an intro over the backing tape), Between The Hammer And The Anvil and Painkiller. The unaired Invincible Shield tracks were The Serpent And The King and Giants In The Sky. Gates Of Hell, which the band have played multiple times over the last year, also represented the latest album. Other surprises included an early airing of career standout Breaking The Law, which was just the fifth song of the night, and the first performance since 2005 of Solar Angels, from 1981's controversial Point Of Entry album. The Shield Of Pain run will continue on Saturday (June 14) at Tjuvholmen Kro in Hamar, Norway. It will last until late July, capped off by two co-headlining shows with Alice Cooper in Scarborough and London on July 23 and 25. On July 5, Judas Priest will perform at the 60th anniversary celebrations of hard rockers Scorpions in Hannover, Germany. The event clashes with Black Sabbath's star-studded farewell show in Birmingham on the same day.
