Chinmayi opens up to the viral reaction to her Muththa Mazhai performance: ‘I was given a job, and I did it'
Chinmayi has been in the limelight for the last few days, ever since she went on stage to sing the AR Rahman composition Muththa Mazhai during the audio launch of Thug Life. The singer, who is banned from singing in the Tamil industry, received unanimous love from fans on social media, and the makers then released the audio on all streaming platforms. In an interview with News18, Chinmayi has now reacted to the outpouring of love and how she processed it all. (Also read: Chinmayi receives love for singing at Thug Life event; fans call ban on her 'Tamil cinema's loss') During the interaction, when Chinmayi was asked about the reaction to her performance and whether she expected any of it, she said: 'This isn't new. Even Dhee sang a song in Kadhalikka Neramillai, and it was performed by some other singer on a stage. It happens all the time. With Muththa Mazhai, I sang the Telugu and Hindi versions, so singing the Tamil version was natural. I already knew the tune, and I just read the lyrics and sang. I didn't think much about it. I was given a job, and I did it.' The singer also added, 'People are discovering that I've sung songs they've loved for years, and they're shocked. In a way, that's great. It wasn't a plan, but I think I just took the path that the song and the composition took–If it wanted a slightly different tonality or projection or a performance from me. I am glad I was able to deliver what was asked of me at that point. And therefore, I don't think they were able to connect all of these songs or from the same singer.' For the unversed, after Chinmayi called out Vairamuthu for sexually abusing her, she was removed from the South Indian Cine, Television Artistes and Dubbing Artistes Union (SICTADAU) after she came out in support of the women who had named Radha Ravi, president of the dubbing union. She has been fighting the case legally for more than 6 years now.

Mic drop: Meet the women rappers making their mark in Kerala's rap scene
The music of revolution, the rhythm of resistance, the beats of the masses... That's rap. Since long, this power-packed genre has been synonymous with counterculture movements across the world. Few other musical styles have captured the essence of societal evolution like rap has. With origins deeply rooted in the African-American communities in the US, especially the Bronx in New York, rap music has long been a powerful voice of expression for the unheard and the marginalised. Its inception can be traced to cultures of African-American storytelling and talking blues. While being traditionally rooted in black literature and music, the genre has gained traction across the world, with multiple people appropriating the rhythmic style to express themselves freely. And among them, Indian rap has also come of age. It encompasses a million stories from a country with a million cultural identities and languages. Be it the experiences of growing up amidst the fields of Punjab or hustling in the slums of Mumbai, from the established club music of Yo Yo Honey Singh to the newcomer star Hanumankind, rap and its variants stemming from the hip-hop movement is as vast and diverse as the culture here. In Kerala too, the relevance and popularity of rap have been on the rise. However, amid the huge fan following and the top charters of artists such as Fejo, Dabzee and Vedan, women rappers remain a rarity. It's to this arena that the sari-clad all-women hip-hop collective Wild Wild Women came out as fresh air, spitting bars like they are made for it. Founded by Ashwini Hiremath (Krantinari) in 2021, Wild Wild Women is a group of artists and activists, whose collective journey revolves around exploring the intricate experiences of women in society and integrating these often marginalised narratives into their artistic works. The one-of-a-kind group features four talented rappers — HashtagPreeti (Preeti N Sutar), M C Mahila (Shruti Raut), JQueen (Jaqulin Lucas), and Pratika (Pratika E Prabhune) along with two break-dancers FlowRaw (Deepa Singh) and MGK (Mugdhamangaonkar) and graffiti artist Gauri Dabhaolkar. Seamlessly switching between Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Kannada and English, they critique patriarchal order, social injustices and female experiences. These women use their art to speak truth to power. Caste, sexuality, religion, and gender — no subject is off limits. Hip-hop has always been a language of the streets, born of struggle, resistance, and identity. And today there are a handful of Malayali women breaking barriers and carving out powerful narratives. These women may not be headlining music festivals or making chart-topping hits, yet. However, they are part of a broader cultural shift. TNIE speaks to three such women rappers from Kerala about their experiences, love for the genre and more.

Rana Daggubati On 'Rana Naidu' Trolling Over Bold Content: 'Venky Sir Had Family Image'
Last Updated: Rana Daggubati explains why he thinks his and Venkatesh Daggubati's Telegu fans reacted so strongly and negatively to Rana Naidu. He adds that he and Venkatesh are friends now. The release of Rana Naidu season one in 2023 opened floodgates of criticism. Many on social media called out the makers for explicitly portraying sex and gruesome violence with generous dollops of cuss words. Earlier, Venkatesh Daggubati had also admitted to the incessant trolling he was subjected to, particularly by his Telugu audiences, who weren't used to seeing him do bold content. Naturally, the announcement of the second season of the series was met with multiple speculations that the makers have decided to sober it down. Now, speaking exclusively to News18 Showsha, Rana Daggubati also admits that their south fans were rather taken aback with him and his uncle, Venkatesh in the show. 'It's not that they aren't used to seeing us that way. It's just that shows aren't that popular in south. Netflix and Amazon hadn't made series or shows there before this one. Rana Naidu was one of the earliest shows that they watched. Mirzapur was dubbed for the audience there but a very small segment of them had watched it," he says. 'Rana Naidu became big because both Venky sir and I were there in it. It became quite mainstream," he adds. But Rana also believes that the backlash from south fans also stemmed from Venkatesh's family man image. 'As for Venky sir's image, he was largely doing films that were family dramas. He did some negative roles very early on in his career, which got forgotten over time. Rana Naidu was a show that got him back to that element," he states. But strong reactions from fans, Rana believes, is sometimes 'inevitable'. 'Every time you're doing something different and try to break away from a mould, there will be a bunch of people who will like you a lot and wouldn't want to see you doing the films or the characters they've been playing for the last few years. And then, there will be another bunch who won't like this new character. It's up to you as an actor as to how you can make them fall in love with this new role or image," he remarks. However, Rana Naidu gave others the opportunity to see a different side of Venkatesh, who in real life is quite different. 'He has a sense of humour – wicked, not so much. He doesn't have an evil bone in his body. He's too much of a saint that way," points out Rana. Interestingly, this series marks their first onscreen collaboration. It goes without saying that it helped Rana explore a new dynamic to their relationship. In his words, what he shares with his uncle today is 'friendship'. 'We definitely got much closer. We got to spend a lot more time together. Before Rana Naidu, we weren't ever together on a set as actors. I've only done some behind-the-scenes work when he was on set as an actor. The uncle-nephew relationship is gone. We're like friends now. We got to travel and have meals together. This bond is a lot of fun," shares the Virata Parvam and Vettaiyan actor. First Published:
