DOE, Labuan Corporation and Marine Dept investigate oil spill at Marina Jetty

By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. LABUAN: An investigation has been launched into the oil spill incident at the Labuan Public Marine Jetty to identify the parties responsible. The Department of Environment (DOE), in a statement to Bernama today, said the investigation would involve Labuan Corporation and the Marine Department. The incident was first reported to the DOE office in Labuan on Aug 14, and enforcement officers were immediately dispatched to the site for inspection at 2.30 pm the same day. The DOE enforcement officers discovered oil waste patches estimated between 500 to 1,000 litres accumulated along the jetty and sticking to boats. 'Samples of the oil waste were collected and have been sent to the Chemistry Department for analysis...as of no compound issued to any parties,' it said. It added that an immediate action notice was issued to the jetty operator, and clean-up operations were carried out by the Petroleum Industry of Malaysia Mutual Aid Group (PIMMAG). The DOE confirmed that it is working closely with the Marine Department, Labuan Corporation, and Labuan Port Authority in managing the case. The department reminded the public that discharging oil into Malaysian waters without a licence is an offence under the Environmental Quality Act 1974, and stern legal action will be taken against those found responsible. The department also reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring and strict enforcement to safeguard Labuan's marine environment. IPOH: Two men were killed after they were hit by a car while they were refuelling their van by the roadside of Kilometre 84.6 of Jalan Kuala Kangsar-Gerik-Pengkalan Hulu on Sunday (Aug 17). Gerik OCPD Supt Abdul Samad Othman said they received a report at 9.15pm about a crash involving a van and two sedans that led to the death of the two men. "The van, with a male driver, 45, and two male passengers, 18 and 30, had stopped by the side of the road in the direction from Kuala Kangsar to Gerik as it had run out of fuel. Because of the near collision, the second sedan, driven by a man, 60, and carrying a woman passenger, 36, hit the two men by the side of the van, causing severe injuries to both of them. "The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver died while receiving treatment at Gerik district hospital," he said, adding that all the other people in all three vehicles were unhurt. Two men killed in road accident while refueling van in Ipoh
IPOH: Two men were killed after being struck by a car while refueling their van by the roadside at Kilometre 84.6 of Jalan Kuala Kangsar-Gerik-Pengkalan Hulu. Gerik district police chief Supt Abdul Samad Othman confirmed the incident occurred yesterday evening. The victims were refueling their Nissan Vanette when the accident took place. A Proton Wira, driven by a 19-year-old, nearly collided with a Proton Preve ahead of it. This caused the Proton Preve to swerve and hit the two men standing beside the van. The 18-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The 45-year-old driver succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Gerik district hospital. All other occupants of the three vehicles involved escaped unharmed. Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. - Bernama

Police Arrest Another Lorry Driver For Evading Roadblock, Reckless Driving
NIBONG TEBAL, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Police have detained another tipper lorry driver for obstructing civil servants from carrying out their duties and driving recklessly during Op Bersepadu and Op Samseng Jalanan at the Jawi Toll Plaza area yesterday. Seberang Perai Selatan district police chief Supt Jay January Siowou said the 24-year-old local man was arrested in Padang Serai, Kedah, and a urine test found him positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. 'In the incident, a lorry was driven dangerously and nearly rammed into police personnel. It crashed through the toll barrier and ran a red light before it was successfully tracked down,' he said in a statement today.
