'We tried Clinique's 'Nude Honey' lipstick that's perfect for summer'

Daily Mirror24-06-2025
Clinique's iconic Black Honey shade has been joined by Nude Honey, a new lip colour that's designed to enhance our natural lip colour and make them 'like your lips but better'
If there were a Hollywood Stars Walk of Fame for beauty products, Clinique's Almost Lipstick in the shade Black Honey would undoubtedly earn a spot, not least for its universally flattering shade and balmy texture. Selling seven tubes every minute worldwide, according to the brand, it's very much the hot commodity today as it was when it launched in 1971.
Following a resurgence in popularity in recent years thanks to TikTok, Clinique has gone on to develop the beloved formula, releasing the lesser-known (but equally gorgeous) Pink Honey in 2023. Now, the American cosmetics company has once again expanded the Honey lineup with a new, equally adaptable hue: Nude Honey.
Described by the brand as 'the only nude you need,' Nude Honey features the same sheer, balmy texture of the original, and is designed to enhance our natural lip colour rather than mask it. It has a much more neutral tone that boasts a carefully balanced mix of warm and cool pigments, creating a shade that looks slightly different on everyone.
Like its predecessors, it features a sheer, buildable formula with 95% conditioning ingredients for a comfortable, soft-shine finish that hydrates the lips. Of course, at £25 per tube, the price point for what is essentially a tinted lip balm, may be too expensive for some shoppers.
If so, the Glossier Ultralip High Shine Lipstick is a close alternative, coming in slightly cheaper at £22. For something even more purse friendly, the No7 Sheer Temptation Lipstick is £9.95.
That said, the Clinique Nude Honey is already raking in the accolades from shoppers. Online, one shopper said: 'I already love my pink honey, but this may be a new favorite. It is a beautiful natural nude.'
'Obsessed! It's giving nude but with a warm, golden hour glow. Adore the sleek package too,' said a second, though others have found it requires regular top-ups, commenting: 'Have been wanting to try this for a while which I wish I had before purchased I like the packaging but doesn't last very long on the lips at all therefore need to top it up which seems to defeat the purpose.'
Another added: 'Excited to try the new Nude honey, it glides up nicely just like Black honey, and gives me a really natural glow. My lips feel hydrated and comfortable too.'
So it seems to have the seal of approval from shoppers, but what about our team of beauty writers? Three women put the new shade to the test and here's what they thought.
Bethan's thoughts:
For a decade straight, Mac's Velvet Teddy has been my signature lip shade, so it's safe to say that a nude lip is my go-to. I enjoyed Black Honey's plummy hue (particularly in its lip and cheek oil form), however, I was less keen on Pink Honey when it launched a couple of years ago. But Nude Honey? It's a bit of me. So much so that I've not worn anything else since it landed on my desk.
Not quite lipstick, not quite gloss, its texture is more like a tinted lip balm that can easily be layered. One swipe offers a sheer wash of colour, like 'your lips but better' with no need for a lip liner or mirror. It's an incredibly forgiving formula, which makes it perfect for on-the-go.
Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive as it's fragrance free, there's no dragging or waxy feel. Instead, just heaps of hydration, a hint of colour and soft-shine finish. The tone is warm and I feel like it makes my skin glow when I wear it. They really have nailed the 'perfect nude' here.
For the moments when I want my makeup to pack more punch, I found it does build easily to a more opaque shade for more drama, while still remaining lightweight and comfortable on the lips.
Even after a full day at work followed by an evening of cocktails, my lips still felt soft, though I did reapply once in a while to bring back the colour. It's not the most longwearing formula in the world, but the fact that it's easy enough to reapply without a mirror negates that. Sorry Velvet Teddy, but this is going to be a Nude Honey summer.
Jada's thoughts:
Nude lips have been my go to since I first found Mac's Whirl as a teenager. I love how easy they are to pair with every outfit and love how well nude shades compliment my skin tone. I've seen the rave reviews for Black Honey and while it does look lovely I've never felt the need to take the plunge since it's slightly more vampy than I'd usually go for, so when I heard about Nude Honey I was immediately interested.
Clinique famously dropped Black Honey in a few different formats, even including a mascara, but the new Nude Honey is only available in their balmy Almost Lipstick. The formula is lovely on. It's not greasy but leaves a nice level of shine and buildable colour which is a big win for me after years of chalk dry lips from matte options.
I recently went to Ibiza, which had scorching hot temperatures that left my shoulders on the dryer side, and wore this out for dinner and drinks. My lips remained super soft and moisturised the entire time, although I did have to reapply after greasy food items. The tube is quite narrow which I think makes application a little bit easier, which was great when it came to topping up my pout as I didn't need a mirror. This is definitely one of my favourite products this summer.
Eve's thoughts:
I've never really been a nude lipstick kind of gal thanks to my typically dry lips. I lean more towards a bold red when my skin is playing ball (hello Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Vixen) bid to make my complexion look better and brighter. Or a lip balm if I want something more natural that also gives my usually dry lips some TLC. But having tried Clinique's newest iteration of its viral Black and Pink Honey Almost Lipstick - its new Nude Honey - I may be somewhat of a convert.
The formula, first off, is silky smooth and creamy, feels nourishing and hydrating on the lips (very important) and best of all doesn't leave a bit of a crispy cast on the dry patches that my trust lip balm hasn't quite banished (something red lipstick tends to highlight).
Costing £25, the lipstick is buildable - the colour isn't too strong on first application - and is great for those who want to build a heavier, deeper nude lip or contrastingly something that enhances natural lip colour.
Applying the products feels just like a lip balm in texture but a bit more fancy thanks to its silver casing and lipstick shape. The emollient rich formula leaves my lips looking subtly glossy - but not too much - and without the stickiness a lip gloss delivers; something I usually love about lipsticks.
Clinique claims that this new nude shade looks 'different on every lip' as it has the perfect mix of warm and cool pigments. With one layer, it leaves my lips looking slightly darker and more mauve-y than usual and it certainly gives me a more 'done up' look. It's long and thin casing makes it easy to carry around in my handbag too and it gives me more precision when applying.
It doesn't stay on all day and after a few hours I've had to reapply the product, but that's not too much faff and is usually the case with lipsticks anyway. I enjoy its fragrance free finish too and lack of stickiness. While I've not yet tried it over or under any other lip colours, as the website says can be done, I do like the boost it gives my lips when I wear it alone and will certainly be adding it to my every-day beauty routine. Get it here.

Unlock cheaper shopping bills and holidays with genius Apple ‘AI tricks' that work on your iPhone, iPad and Mac

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) APPLE fans can slash their shopping bills and find cheap holidays using their gadget's built-in AI tricks. It's perfect if you've got an iPhone, iPad or Mac computer lying around at home – just waiting for a free AI upgrade. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 13 Your Apple gadgets have some handy AI tricks that you might be missing out on Credit: Apple 13 You can create a fun emoji for your bedtime stories Credit: Sean Keach 13 Then you can generate an entire bedtime story based on your virtual character Credit: Sean Keach The Sun can reveal five clever tricks that work using Apple Intelligence, and they only take a few seconds each. The only note is that you'll need an Apple gadget that actually supports Apple Intelligence. That includes: iPhone 15 Pro iPhone 15 Pro Max iPhone 16 iPhone 16 Plus iPhone 16 Pro iPhone 16 Pro Max iPhone 16e iPad Pro (M1 and later) iPad Air (M1 and later) iPad mini (A17 Pro) MacBook Air/Pro (M1 and later) iMac/Mac Mini (M1 and later) Mac Studio (M1 Max and later) Mac Pro (M2 Ultra) Apple AI Trick #1 – BEDTIME STORIES Your iPhone can create bedtime stories for kids. It's a perfect parenting hack. Just go into Messages, bring up the keyboard, tap on Genmoji, then create a funny character. Maybe it's a squirrel with a shovel or an elephant in a chef's hat. This will be your character. Now go into Notes, tap on Writing Tools, then choose Compose with ChatGPT, and ask for a short story about your elephant chef – and say they're going on an adventure. It'll create the story, which you can then illustrate by dropping the Genmoji at the top. Or you could even go into Apple's Image Playground app and make a full picture, then paste that in instead. It's perfect for bedtime because you can have a different story every night. Apple interview with Greg Joz Joswiak on new artificial intelligence, screening, hold assist, carplay, liquid glass and ios updates Apple AI Trick #2 – HOLIDAY PLANNER Another easy trick is letting Apple's AI plan your holiday – or at least the itinerary. This one works on iPhone and iPad, but we tried it on Mac. Just double-click the Command button on your keyboard to bring up Siri. Then type in your request, like asking for a three-day hiking trip in the Cotswolds. 13 You can type to Siri and ask for help with holiday planning Credit: Sean Keach 13 Siri can use ChatGPT to generate a holiday itinerary in seconds Credit: Sean Keach You could even ask for a budget-friendly holiday with cheap activities to save money. Let Siri send your request to ChatGPT and it'll make a full itinerary that you can drop straight into a document. And you can even generate a fun AI pic to go with it too using Apple's Image Playground feature. Apple AI Trick #3 – SKETCH EXPERT I'm hopeless at drawing, but AI isn't. HOW DOES CHATGPT WORK ON IPHONE? Here's the official guidance from Apple... "Siri can tap into ChatGPT for certain requests, including questions about photos or documents," Apple explained. "And with Compose in Writing Tools, you can create and illustrate original content from scratch. "You control when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared. Anyone can access ChatGPT for free, without creating an account. "ChatGPT subscribers can connect accounts to access paid features within these experiences." Picture Credit: Apple There's a clever trick that turns your own sketches into art – and it works using the Apple Pencil on an iPad. Draw something rough in the Notes app – we sketched a terrarium – and then write what it is next to it. Now go into the Apple Pencil menu, choose the AI button, and circle your creation. And in just a few seconds, it'll transform what you've drawn into a proper sketch. You can even swipe through several options to find the perfect one. 13 Even a very average sketch can be transformed using Apple's AI Credit: Sean Keach 13 You can convert your drawings into impressive pieces of art in the Notes app Credit: Sean Keach It's a nice way to illustrate your notes quickly. Another handy tip: if you draw a shape like a square, circle, or star, and leave the Apple Pencil tip pressed to the screen at the end, it'll neaten it up for you. So your rough circle will snap to become perfectly round in an instant. This also works with drawing arrows too. Apple AI Trick #4 – PHOTO CLEAN-UP Fourth is Clean Up, which is built into Apple's default Photos app on your iPhone. 13 You can use Clean Up to remove almost any object from a scene Credit: Sean Keach It's a handy way to scrub unwanted objects from your pics. Maybe you've snapped Big Ben but there's a tourist in the way, or someone has photobombed your perfect selfie. Just go into the photo, tap on the edit button, and then choose the Clean Up option. Then you can tap on, rub over, or circle the object that you want to delete. 13 If you spot something unwanted in your photo, just get rid of it virtually Credit: Sean Keach 13 Just circle, scrub or tap the object that you want to remove Credit: Sean Keach 13 Clean Up will delete the object in seconds – replacing it with background Credit: Sean Keach Give it a few seconds and it should vanish from view, replaced by what the AI thinks should've been in the spot. If it doesn't work perfectly on the first go, you can give it a few more passes with Clean Up to get it right. And you can always revert back to the original image at any time if you don't like the edited version. Apple AI Trick #5 – SHOPPING HACK Lastly, there's a handy trick called Visual Intelligence that's great for shopping. First, you'll want to load it up. One way is to go into Settings > Action Button and set it to activate from your Action Button. Or if you have an iPhone with a Camera Control button, you can just hold that down instead. Now snap a pic of an object. We tried it on a Labubu, which is a massively popular collectible toy. 13 You can scan almost anything using Visual Intelligence – and then see if Google can find it online Credit: Sean Keach 13 You can find the cheapest prices or lookalike alternatives for loads of products, including clothes and furniture Credit: Sean Keach But it also works just fine on clothes or furniture that you like too. The AI will identify what it's seeing, and then show you a load of places that you can buy it online. You can then find the best price for the exact item you're looking at. And it'll usually also surface similar-looking items if you snap clothes or furniture, so it's a clever way to find cheap 'dupes' of expensive items that you like.

Lady Macbeth Played Wing Defence Assembly George Square Studios (17) ★★★★☆ Macbeth has been adapted many times and in just as many ways, but never has the Scottish Play been transposed into the world of competitive netball before now. Explored through the lens of an all-female netball team, Dunsinane Hellhounds, this collaboration between West Australian company Crash Theatre Co. and House of Oz makes for a cutthroat but markedly less gory take on the literary classic. We meet the team: there's Coach Duncan, a promising player in her day, sidelined by a torn ACL. Then, there's 'Mac' in Wing Defence, who's looking to move to Wing Attack. The position is currently occupied by team captain, Chloe Macduff – but not for long. Lady Macbeth Played Wing Defence | Nick Robertson Featuring an entertaining and catchy electropop soundtrack (audiences will be pleased to learn this is also available on Spotify), there is a memorable section of acapella when The Dagger Divas (aka the Three Witches) appear, and the outro also includes a remix of the play's repertoire, elevating the already fast-paced choreography and superlative vocals. While onstage energy wanes during scenes of dialogue, it remains consistently high during musical numbers, and this only increases as Mac sets about usurping her fellow teammates by murdering their reputations. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Select quotes from Shakespeare's original interweaves contemporary teen slang. In a netball context, the original lines are so self-aware as to be unserious, and the tragedy swiftly turns tragicomic. To be clear, Mac is not the character of Lady Macbeth – rather, the role of Macbeth is being played by a woman – and what the play loses through the omission or sublimation of its female characters into their male counterparts, it makes up for by celebrating women in sport. Ultimately, Lady Macbeth Played Wing Defence is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, highlighting the vanishing point whereby positive qualities such as passion and devotion are transformed, becoming poisonous. JOSEPHINE BALFOUR-OATTS until 25 August Madonna on the Rocks Assembly Roxy (Venue 139) ★★★☆☆ Actor Marie Hamilton comes from a line of artists. Both her mother and her grandmother became estranged from their own creative practices of painting and piano playing during pregnancy, and since becoming a mother herself, she is terrified of turning into them. Using autobiography and original music, Madonna on the Rocks has a ramshackle, disorderly, almost grotesque quality, not dissimilar from the chaos of new motherhood. Flapjacks fly everywhere, and the script is full of stomach-turning descriptions, such as of verruca-filled puddles at the local swimming pool. In addition to performing herself, Hamilton plays her mother, other mothers, and the head of the domestic team at the swimming pool. This being between bodies, who appear suddenly and without warning, only adds to the commotion. Hamilton explores the tensions of being a mother and a daughter, how her responsibilities and loyalties are divided and seemingly incompatible. The delivery is often muted, perhaps to convey Hamilton's exhaustion and fury as she puts her 'darkest, nastiest thoughts' centre stage. 'Making art is a proper job!' she mutters to no-one and everyone, determined to explode the concept of the 'mum show' whilst raising awareness of perinatal mental health, the second of which she achieves resoundingly. JOSEPHINE BALFOUR-OATTS until 24 August Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Ill Behaviour Summerhall (Venue 26) ★★★☆☆ Things get messy in this experimental show from Singaporean multi-disciplinary artist Suhui Hee. Inspired by Hee's experience of chronic illness, Ill Behaviour innovatively combines auscultation – the act of listening to the body's internal sounds – and intense movement into a strange, visceral and compelling celebration of human corporeality. It begins with two performers – Hee and XUE – spooning on a stainless-steel table, dressed in raggedy leotards. Hee has a microphone contraption strapped around her, via which the inner workings of her body can be heard. She awakes and begins sliding and scrambling around the stage. The crunch of her bones, the thump-thump of her heart, and the gurgle of her guts are woven together into an odd ASMR soundscape. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad From there, Hee and XUE embark on a twisted, torturous pas de deux. Sometimes they writhe like creatures from a horror movie. Sometimes they stagger like wounded animals. Sometimes they embrace like lovers. As they move, the sampled noises of their bodies are worked into a live score, which evolves from ethereal to squelchy, sometimes sounding like a Brian Eno piece, sometimes like the score from Dune. Finally, out comes the gunge. Hee and XUE take great globs of intestinal sludge and smear each other with it. Thankfully, a sheet of tarpaulin has been taped to the floor. FERGUS MORGAN until 10 August Merrily, Merrily, Merrily The Space Triplex (Venue 38) ★★★☆☆ Merrily, Merrily, Merrily appears innocuous at first. Dressed all in black, a party of three are covered in confetti and they are barely able to stand. They speak mostly in idioms `– 'The drunk mind speaks a sober heart'; 'The wise forgive but do not forget'; 'Don't have sex with the windows open: love may be blind, but the neighbours aren't' – and this reinforces their meandering exchanges, fuelled by the vodka that they continue to swig neat from the bottle. A rendition of the nursery rhyme Row, Row, Row Your Boat recalls the play's title and introduces a sinister edge, marking one of many excellent transitions that flash the company back to some point earlier in the evening, dancing together in a nightclub. The three demonstrate undeniable chemistry throughout, and sexual overtones are clear from the off. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad As the night continues, they traverse subjects of love, beauty, sex, war, fear, hatred, boredom, and God. Finally, they agree to share their deepest secrets, but one of their number has an ulterior motive. The audience are not made privy to the secrets that pass between the characters, however, and so this motive, and the gravity it ultimately holds, remains unclear. JOSEPHINE BALFOUR-OATTS until 9 August This Side of Life C Arts C Venues C Aquila (Venue 21) ★★★☆☆ The nostalgic charm of Golden Age musicals is channelled in this ambitious production, complete with singing, acting, tap, and a six-piece band. Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society deliver a feel-good, lively show which at times feels a little overcrowded. The story follows two hopeful performers chasing Broadway dreams and two Cockney con artists offering them a dubious shot at stardom. It's an intriguing and recognisable tale about ambition and artists' struggles, performed by a cast who show genuine promise. The two conmen are played with cheeky style and confident swagger as they switch between New York talent agents and their true selves. Matt Williams' score is full of 60s flair, with great numbers, including a witty song about 'gaining exposure' where cast, music and tight choreography come together effectively. There's also a special final duet, featuring beautiful vocals and harmonies. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Unfortunately, competing sound levels between band and performers make it difficult to hear key dialogue and lyrics, causing parts of the story to be lost. The tap dancing, while an affectionate nod to classic musicals, sometimes clashes with the band. Improved sound mixing and clearer staging would allow the cast and multi-instrumental band members to have their deserved moment to shine. As it stands, it's a vibrant showcase of young talent with room to grow. SUZANNE O'BRIEN until 17 August Seizure Grand Theatre at theSpace @ Surgeons' Hall (Venue 53) ★★☆☆☆ There are some good performances within this play-within-a-play, but a confusing, boring script, and an overdone concept means it never quite makes it off the ground. Seizure confounds reality with illusion: as a mystery is being unpicked on stage in the play's fiction, it might just extend outside to the realm of the play's reality. The performance burns slow to no reward, both its worlds are difficult to believe, and its climax is not predictable, but random and unsatisfying. The cast are generally competent, and they seem to form a lovely community, but it isn't quite enough to make the 90 minutes worthwhile. RÓISIN MCMULLAN until 9 August
