Facebook's RM2.5B Malaysian Ad Revenue Fuels Scam Concerns
He said the figure included advertisements suspected of promoting scams and online gambling to about 670 million users of the platform in the region.
In Malaysia alone, Fahmi said Facebook generated an estimated RM2.5 billion in revenue last year.
'This is the problem we face — many of the ads they (Facebook) display are scam ads promoting fake investments or so-called 'magical' products that can be bought at very low prices. There's no control over this.
'In fact, just a few weeks ago, my team identified drug and vape (electronic cigarette) sales activities within Facebook groups,' he said during the Communications Ministry's monthly assembly yesterday.
Fahmi said that to date, Facebook had yet to cooperate with the government's social media platform licensing initiative enforced earlier this year.
'They (Facebook) still refuse to be licensed under the licensing system we announced. They are unwilling to cooperate in several areas,' he said.
On Jan 1, the government officially enforced licensing under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), aimed at enhancing online safety, protecting users, and strengthening regulatory oversight of internet messaging service providers and social media platforms.
The government's efforts did not stop there, as Parliament passed the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024 last December, which will be enforced soon.
'With the enforcement of OnSA, social media platforms like Facebook will be required to comply.
'Issues such as paedophile groups and child sexual abuse material (CSAM) must be eliminated from these platforms, and those involved must be brought to justice,' he said.

Home Minister presents National Registration (Amendment) Bill 2025 to Parliament, expanding biometric data powers
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The National Registration (Amendment) Bill 2025 was tabled for the first time at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said. The bill will also be tabled for the second and third reading during this Parliament session. It aims to amend the National Registration Act 1959 (Act 78), including amending Section 2 to include a new definition of biometric data under Clause 2 and Subsection 6(2) of the same act are to enhance the Minister's power to make regulations under Clause 3. Subclause 3(a) will seek to replace paragraph 6(2)(d) of Act 78 to empower the Minister to make regulations to provide for the collection and recording of biometric data and the conditions that may be imposed on the collection and recording of biometric data, while Subclause 3(b) will seek to amend paragraph 6(2)(e) of Act 78 to empower the Minister to make regulations to provide for controls on the use and information in identity cards. Also, Subclause 3(c) will seek to delete paragraph 6(2)(j) of Act 78 which gives the Minister the power to prescribe the maximum charge for taking photographs since no charge is imposed for taking photographs. The amendment will also insert a new section 6A into Act 78 to give the Minister the power, with the approval of the public prosecutor, to make regulations to prescribe the offences that can be compounded and the methods and procedures for compounding such offences. The clause also seeks to give the director-general the power to compound offences that can be compounded with the written consent of the public prosecutor. — Bernama

Umno Youth chief Akmal to face court charge over Facebook post allegedly disturbing public order

In a statement, the AGC said the decision followed an examination of investigation papers submitted by the police. 'Based on the testimony and evidence obtained, this department has decided to bring charges under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code against Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, Muhammad Hilman Idham and Siti Hajar Aflah Sharuddin,' it said. 'The statements made by these individuals were found to have disturbed public order or constituted improper use of network facilities or network services.' The AGC said all charges will be filed at the Magistrates' Court with the relevant local jurisdiction soon. It added that the statements in question were found to have disturbed public order or constituted improper use of network facilities or services. Section 505(b) handles those causing fear or alarm to the public, and to induce them to commit an offence against public order. If convicted, a person can be punished with a prison term up to two years, a fine, or both. Hilman is the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Youth chief, with his charge is believed to be over a video of him speaking at a July 29 protest in which he allegedly claimed the arrest of some Bersatu members was politically motivated. It is unsure which Facebook post is responsible for Dr Akmal's charge. Meanwhile, Chandrasegaran Subramaniam will be charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988. Last week, Dr Akmal said he was called by the federal police to give his statement over the protest he led on the display of Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas, Penang. The AGC had previously warned Malaysians against vigilantism in cases involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang, amid furore over the Umno Youth protest. Anwar to consult PKR sec-gen after Umno sends protest note over defections
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 — PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reportedly said today that he will consult party secretary-general Datuk Fuziah Salleh after Umno sent a protest note over its members jumping over. New Straits Times also reported the prime minister confirming the receipt of the letter today, echoing remarks by other party leaders. 'We received the letter some time ago. I will check with the secretary-general,' he told reporters on the sidelines of the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly here. Previously, PKR information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil had confirmed that the party has received the latter and its central leadership council will review the matter by the end of the month. Last week, Umno said it will protest against any of its allies in the government who have allowed or planning to take its members to join their ranks. Its secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki warned that such a move will lead to a rift within the government coalition.
