Police investigate after West Auckland schoolboy offered ride by stranger
'There were no reports of threats or violence involved.'
In a notice to parents yesterday morning, school staff wrote that a pupil had been 'approached by a stranger in a car this morning on their way to school asking if he wanted a ride'.
'He did all the right things and told her no thank you, continued walking and reported it to an adult … please talk to your children about what to do in situations such as these, and report any suspicious behaviour.'
Police were investigating the incident as a 'report of suspicious activity', said Farrant, the Waitematā West area prevention manager.
Farrant didn't immediately provide a description of the woman or her vehicle.
'We are now making enquiries to identify the woman. As part of these enquiries, we will seek to understand what exactly has occurred.'
Reports like this were 'understandably unsettling', Farrant said.
'We ask the community to continue reporting suspicious activity to us … report this to police as soon as possible by calling 111.'
Anyone with information on yesterday's incident should call police on 105 and cite the reference number 250507/8761.
'He's not my father'
In the Manurewa incident, the boy was walking home by himself for the first time when he was approached about 100m north of Rowandale School on Rowandale Ave by a Polynesian man aged in his mid-50s to 60s and offered lollies.
After turning the lollies down and walking away, the boy 'felt that this man had grabbed him from behind', the 8-year-old's uncle told 1News yesterday.
'With retaliation he had pushed the man's hand away and ran away.'
Other parents called out, asking the man – who was wearing a camouflage jacket and driving a white sedan with offensive words and gestures on the side panels – if he was the boy's father.
'The man … said 'Yes', and then my nephew responded 'No, he's not my father'," the uncle told 1News.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident, which occurred at 3.05pm on Monday, Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Tiernan said.
'We are taking this matter seriously and our inquiries are ongoing, including working to identify the vehicle the man was driving.'
Reassurance patrols were also taking place at the start and finish of the school day, said Tiernan, of Counties Manukau Central CIB.
'We continue to ask anyone with information to contact Police on 105 using the reference number 250505/2064,' Tiernan said.

One dead after single-vehicle crash in Bay of Plenty

'Mum went airborne': Son on alleged hit-and-run that left two injured
An Auckland man is pleading for help to find his missing dog after an alleged hit-and-run in Paremoremo left his mother and her friend injured during a Sunday morning walk. Emergency services were called to Attwood Rd, Paremoremo at around 7.10am on Sunday to reports two pedestrians had been struck by a white ute while they were walking their dogs. St John said it responded with two ambulances and one manager to the scene. "Our crews assessed and treated two patients, one in a serious condition who was transported to Auckland City Hospital, and one in a moderate condition who was transported to North Shore Hospital," a spokesperson said. Sergeant Jason Cleeton said police were working to identify the driver of the vehicle. ADVERTISEMENT "The ute was travelling on Attwood Rd towards Paremoremo Rd. It sustained some damage in the crash, which will likely be noticeable." Mitchell Prouse told 1News it was "just flight mode" when he got the call. "The guy left and both of them could have been dead." The 27-year-old said his mother had several broken ribs, a lacerated liver, and lower fractures to her spine. He urged people to contact police if they knew anything. "There's only around 200 houses down here, someone knows where this vehicle came from. If you've left at around 7 in the morning, you either live here or you were here last night." 'Help us': Friend of Wgtn nurse missing in Europe left in limbo
The friend of a Wellington nurse missing in Europe is distraught and feels "shunted from pillar to post" with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs unable to offer support due to his citizenship status. Vanron Ngoun, 60, known as Van, is a New Zealand resident and an Australian citizen of Cambodian descent. When approached by 1News, MFAT said consular assistance would be provided by the government of citizenship. Ngoun was last heard from on May 27 when he messaged friends from Naples, Italy and has been unresponsive since. He was due to fly from Milan to Cambodia, via Doha and Bangkok on May 30. He moved to New Zealand seven years ago, qualified as a registered nurse two years ago, and now works at Wellington Hospital. Dr Clive Aspin, Van's close friend and long-time flatmate, said he was a "well-seasoned traveller" and that he was heading from Italy to Cambodia to visit his family. "He's a really kind, compassionate person who's lived through a lot of adversity, and he knows how to provide care and support to people when they need it most, and that's what he needs now. "It really is totally of character for him to go silent like this, and we just want to be there. We just want to be in a place where we can help him if he needs our help." "We can confirm NZ Police have received a missing person's report and have made some initial enquiries as much as we are able.
