Hyderabad-based engineering and technology solutions firm Cyient plans to design chips for automotive, data centre, medical equipment and aerospace and defence applications by leveraging 800-900 intellectual property rights (IPRs) that it owns, managing director Krishna Bodanapu said. The focus will be on scaling up capabilities in power and machine-to-machine communications targeting these industries, Bodanapu, who is also the company's vice-chairman, told ET. Most of Cyient 's IPRs are in technology such as protocols for communication, input-output and memory.Bodanapu said a company that can design and manufacture chips will have a huge opportunity at a time when the geopolitics of semiconductor supply chains are rebalancing with countries looking to de-risk the source of supply.Cyient demerged its existing semiconductor business in April into a wholly owned subsidiary, Cyient Semiconductors , to increase its focus on the sector.Cyient Semiconductors will work on scaling application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) turnkey solutions for global clients through a fabless model. Cyient Semiconductors has done a strategic tie up with global foundries company MIPS, to create specialised ASIC and application-specific standard product (ASSP) solutions using the MIPS Atlas processor portfolio.Demand for these products is skyrocketing. Arguing that the number of chips in various applications is growing exponentially, Bodanapu said a small room may host 200-300 chips, including the chip cards in the door, the lights and the phones. "An estimate is that a conference room will now have 2,000-3,000 chips in various formats," he said.A $100 million investment has been earmarked for Cyient Semiconductors over the next one to two years, Bodanapu said. "The opportunity is huge. We need to capitalise on that sooner rather than later. We are looking at various avenues for that investment," he said. Cyient's comfortable cash position is expected to support much of the investments, he said.Cyient, which subcontracts the manufacturing of 5 million chips to global foundries, has seen no disruption in chip production from international foundries despite the ongoing trade tiff between the US and China, Bodanapu said. The ongoing global disruption in critical mineral supplies, owing to China extending restrictions on those used in high-tech components, permanent magnets and batteries, has also not affected the semiconductor manufacturing sector so far, Bodanapu said. "We haven't seen a big supply chain constraint at least at the moment. Be it silicon, or the packaging materials, there's still enough supply in the world,' he said, adding: 'It hasn't impacted us."

Karnataka Bank aims ₹85K cr loan book by March 2026 as operations stabilise

After witnessing a contraction in credit in the first quarter, private lender Karnataka Bank expects to expand its loan book by Rs 7,000–8,000 crore, predominantly in the retail, agriculture and MSME (RAM) segments, to cross Rs 85,000 crore by March 2026. The operations of the Mangaluru-based lender, which faced challenges after the exit of its managing director and chief executive officer and executive director in Q1FY26, have now stabilised, according to the transcript of an analysts' call after its Q1FY26 results. The bank's gross advances declined by 1.6 per cent to Rs 74,267.02 crore as of 30 June 2025, from Rs 75,455.01 crore at the end of June 2024 (Q1FY25). 'The bank's target is to grow the loan portfolio to Rs 89,000 crore, and we will make an attempt to achieve that. But Rs 85,000–86,000 crore of advances by the end of FY26 will definitely give us a boost while we make efforts to reach Rs 89,000 crore,' its current MD and CEO Raghavendra S Bhat said on the analysts' call. He was appointed MD and CEO from 16 July 2025 for a three-month period, or until the appointment of a regular MD and CEO, whichever is earlier. The lender has revamped its credit policy across key products in housing, mortgage, gold and MSME loans. It plans to reduce exposure to low-yielding large- and mid-corporate loans that were opportunistically deployed for better returns than treasury. The strategy, bank executives said, would be to accelerate retail growth while stabilising the mid- and large-corporate portfolio with good quality, better-yielding loans. Its retail book rose from Rs 19,499 crore in June 2024 (Q1FY25) to Rs 21,538 crore in June 2025 (Q1FY26). The MSME portfolio contracted from Rs 14,834 crore to Rs 13,860 crore, while the agriculture book expanded from Rs 10,906 crore to Rs 12,168 crore, according to an analysts' presentation. The lender posted a 27 per cent decline in net profit to Rs 292.4 crore in Q1FY26 from Rs 400.33 crore in Q1FY25, owing to a fall in net interest income and higher provisions.

Flipkart and China businesses lift Walmarts sales numbers in Q2 of FY26

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) US-based retail giant Walmart on Thursday reported a 10 per cent growth in its international business in the second quarter of FY26 in constant currency terms, helped by Indian e-commerce arm Flipkart along with the China market and Walmex. Walmart International, which operates in 18 countries outside the US, including India, had a 'growth in net sales led by China, Walmex, and Flipkart", according to the earnings statement from the Bentonville-headquartered firm. Moreover, transaction counts and unit volumes were up across markets of Walmart International, it added. Walmex is the Mexican and Central American division of Walmart. Walmart, which follows February-January financial year, reported a USD 32.7 billion in sales from its international business, registering a growth of 10.5 per cent on constant currency terms. Its net sales were at USD 31.2 million, up 5.5 per cent. Walmart's overall revenue was at USD 177.4 billion, up 4.8 per cent year on year, and 5.6 per cent higher in constant currency terms. However, the operating income of Walmart International declined 9.8 per cent to USD 1.2 billion, 'affected by strategic growth investments in India, Canada and Mexico", it said. Walmart had acquired a 77 per cent controlling stake in Flipkart in 2018 in a USD 16-billion deal. Subsequently, it has raised its shareholding and now owns over 80 per cent stake in the Bengaluru-headquartered e-commerce major.
