Meet the Asians ‘on the front lines' of Trump's immigration crackdown in Los Angeles
Filipinos , is reporting an atmosphere of 'agitation, fear and pain' as protesters in Los Angeles continue to rally against raids by immigration agents, amid US President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigrants.
'What we've witnessed are military-style raids where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), along with other federal agencies and the military, are going to the communities with their faces covered, armed and taking people from their homes and workplaces,' an activist using the alias Paul Duque from the US-based Filipino labour advocacy group Tanggol Migrante (Defend Migrants) Network, told This Week in Asia.
Nearly 500 people have been arrested in Los Angeles since protests started on June 6 after a series of ICE raids on migrants swept the city.
Close to 10 million people live in Los Angeles county – which includes Los Angeles and 87 other cities. Of these, 48.6 per cent are of Latino or Hispanic heritage – believed to be the primary target of these immigration raids.

US' Olympic 100m medallist Kerley provisionally banned for whereabouts violation
American Fred Kerley, a two-time 100 metres Olympic medallist, has been provisionally suspended for failing to notify anti-doping officials of his whereabouts, it was announced on Tuesday. Kerley, who took 100m silver at the Tokyo Olympics and bronze last year in Paris, as well as the 2022 world 100m crown, was suspended for 'failing to comply with his anti-doping whereabouts obligations', according to the Athletics Integrity Unit. Elite athletes have strict requirements about informing anti-doping officials about their locations, such as at training camps or when travelling, and must provide a time and location each day to comply with rules regarding unannounced doping tests. Three failures within a year to comply with the requirements, such as a missed test or inaccurate information given to the anti-doping agency, are punishable. New details emerge about Trump's US$175 billion Golden Dome missile defence system
The Trump administration's flagship Golden Dome missile defence system will include four layers – one satellite-based and three on land – with 11 short-range batteries located across the continental US, Alaska and Hawaii, according to a US government slide presentation on the project first reported by Reuters. The slides, tagged 'Go Fast, Think Big!', were presented to 3,000 defence contractors in Huntsville, Alabama, last week and reveal the unprecedented complexity of the system, which faces an ambitious 2028 deadline set by US President Donald Trump. The system is estimated to cost US$175 billion, but the slides show uncertainties still loom over the basic architecture of the project because the number of launchers, interceptors, ground stations and missile sites needed for the system has yet to be determined. 'They have a lot of money, but they don't have a target of what it costs yet,' said one US official. So far, Congress has appropriated US$25 billion for Golden Dome in Trump's tax-and-spend bill passed in July. Another US$45.3 billion is earmarked for Golden Dome in his 2026 presidential budget request. Intended as a multilayered missile defence shield for the United States, Golden Dome draws inspiration from Israel's Iron Dome, but is significantly bigger due to the geography it will need to protect and the complexity due to the varied threats it will face. According to the slides, the system architecture consists of four integrated layers: a space-based sensing and targeting layer for missile warning and tracking as well as 'missile defence' and three land-based layers consisting of missile interceptors, radar arrays, and potentially lasers.
