Boy, 16, killed in 'hit and run' was walking 'to pick up a takeaway'
Abdullah Yaser Abdullah Al Yazidi, known locally as Abdul, was walking along the pavement on Staniforth Road, in Darnall, when he was hit by a grey Audi on Wednesday afternoon.
The car appeared to swerve towards three e-bike riders, crashing into one of them before hitting Abdul.
He was taken to hospital but died of his injuries. The 18-year-old e-bike rider sustained serious injuries which are not life-threatening.
Shabnam Begum, 34, witnessed the aftermath and arrived to crowds of people filming on their phones and emergency services.
'I crossed over and saw Abdul on the floor. His skin colour was pale and he had dry lips. There was screaming and shouting all around,' she told Metro.
'I went back to my home and grabbed some bedsheets and returned to cover him up.
'It was heartbreaking to witness. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.'
Shabnam has lived in the area for around 20 years and said that Abdul worked in what locals call the 'red shop' with his older brother and dad by the Al-Shafeey Centre mosque.
'His dad sent him to pick up a takeaway before it happened,' she added.
The mum-of-two lives across the road from where the crash occurred and said Abdul, his dad, older brother and sister moved to Darnall to escape war-torn Yemen six months ago.
Abdul's mum later joined the family once they had settled in to their new life in the UK.
'He was a very happy child who would always give it his 100% in the shop because he came from a war-torn country,' she said.
'He was a beautiful young boy. I can never forget his smile every time I visited the shop.
'I would often ask if he was ok in the shop and he would put his little thumb up.'
Shabnam said that people in the community are meant to be celebrating Eid but the mood is subdued since Abdul's death.
She said that speeding on the main road has been an issue for many years with many drivers going over the 20mph limit.
Shabnam says she feels unsafe in the area following the crash because Abdul was hit on the pavement.
'I'm always extra careful looking both ways before I cross the road since the crash.
'It has really impacted people in the local area but what is nice is that the community has come together to remember him.'
A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. A 26-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has now been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. They both remain in police custody.
Two people, a man, aged 46, and a woman, aged 45, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have both been bailed pending further enquiries.
A tribute to the teen posted on Facebook reads: 'The teenager who was struck by a vehicle in Darnall has been named as 16-year-old Abdullah Yaha Al-Zaidy.
'Abdullah, known locally as Abdul, was a beloved member of the Al-Shafeey Centre mosque.
'May Allah grant him the highest ranks of Jannah and grant his family and friends strength and patience during this unimaginable time.
'It is deeply heartbreaking to see his photo—a boy always smiling, always full of joy.
'He worked tirelessly alongside his father and had plans to begin college soon.' More Trending
Senior Investigating Officer in the case, Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood, described it as a 'heartbreaking case' which involved a 'completely innocent boy'.
He confirmed a team of detectives are working at pace to piece together the circumstances which unfolded.
He added: 'I am renewing our message to not share footage of this incident which may cause further distress to Abdullah's loved ones. They have lost a son and beloved member of the family in the most tragic of circumstances and have requested for their privacy to be respected.'
Police have urged people to send through footage, imagery or information that may help in their investigation.

Man arrested at protest after police misread 'Plasticine Action' T-shirt
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Police mistakenly arrested a protester over terrorism offences because they thought his 'Plasticine Action' T-shirt read 'Palestine Action.' Miles Pickering, 59, says senior officers burst out laughing when they realised the blunder before releasing him without charge. He told Metro that he turned up to a protest in Parliament Square on August 9 over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza wearing the T-shirt. However, when a police officer saw the tee, he arrested the 59-year-old and hauled him to Scotland Yard. This shirt was only a few jumbled letters away from Palestine Action, a group banned under terrorism legislation last month. Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000 makes it illegal to wear anything supporting a banned organisation. Instead, the T-shirt was for Plasticine Action, a group of artists who campaign against animation generated by artificial intelligence (AI) Plasticine is a modelling material used to create stop-motion figures, such as the character Morph, who features on Miles' shirt. Miles, from Brighton, told Metro: 'He must have misinterpreted the fact that I was wearing a Plasticine Action T-shirt as me wearing a Palestine Action T-shirt. 'I do not support Palestine Action and was not at the protest to support them. 'But I was definitely there to protest genocide and the government's role, as well as to highlight the plight of animators losing their work in this country.' The protest itself led to 532 arrests on terrorism charges, almost all under section 13 of the Terrorism Act. Miles was also nicked under Section 13 and was taken to two gazebos handling the large queues of arrested people. Protesters cheered Miles and others on, the engineer recalled, saying: ''Well done,' 'You're a hero', 'You're fantastic'.' 'I'm pointing to my T-shirt and going, 'Have a look, Plasticine Action',' Miles said. 'I put my fingers to my lips like, 'shh, don't tell the police'. And everyone's laughing and taking photos. And the crowd can see what's happening.' As he was waiting in line to be booked in, a senior officer asked the arresting officer if Miles could be detained under Section 12, which would bring more serious charges of supporting a proscribed group. Miles said: 'My arresting officer said, 'I can't,' and the senior officer said, 'Why not?' 'And he said, 'Because he hasn't got Palestine Action written on him. He's got Plasticine Action written on him'.' Miles claims that 10 minutes later, two plainclothes police officers approached him and burst out laughing after seeing his shirt. 'They both look at me, and they said, 'Can you just hold your scarf out of the way, please, sir?' So I did that, and they both laughed quite a lot.' Shortly after, Miles was let go. 'The arresting officer says, 'I've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is I'm de-arresting you',' Miles added. 'And I said: 'What's the bad news?' He said, 'It's going to be really embarrassing for me'.' Miles' friend, Cara Brenna, 50, who was not present at the rally, said Miles is a 'lovely guy who stands up for what is right'. 'He's just using humour to show how crazy things are,' the creative artist and charity fundraiser told Metro. 'The fact that he was arrested for wearing a T-shirt saying, 'Plasticine Action'? We need to have a look at what is happening and what common sense is.' The Brighton local added: 'The police's job is to protect the people, but is that being done?' After footage of Miles' arrest went viral online, demand for more copies of the shirt has skyrocketed. Profits go to the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians. According to the product pages at the time of writing, 1,745 white and black Plasticine Action T-shirts have been sold. Miles said: 'What do the police do with people who are walking around with Plasticine Action T-shirts? 'And if another 1,000 people are wearing our T-shirt, or even 500, are they really gonna arrest them as well?' Footage over the weekend from another pro-Palestine protest in Glasgow showed a man, also wearing a Plasticine Action tee, being spoken to by officers. The force confirmed that no arrests were made. Palestine Action was banned after members broke into the RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and sprayed red paint into aircraft engines. The group, which does not call for violence against people and often targets sites operated by Israeli weapons manufacturers, argued that their actions were a response to the 'genocide' happening in Gaza. Peter Leary, deputy director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, accused the government of 'wasting public resources' and 'silencing' protesters. 'The disgraceful proscription of Palestine Action comes alongside the use of draconian police powers to impose unprecedented restrictions on marches in solidarity with the Palestinian people,' he told Metro. More Trending The Met Police said in a statement to Metro: 'Shortly after 2pm on Saturday (August 9), officers on duty in Parliament Square arrested a man on suspicion of an offence under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000. 'At the time of his arrest, the man was wearing a scarf that partially obscured the slogan on his T-shirt, which officers believed read Palestine Action. 'He was taken to one of the nearby prisoner processing points where, once officers realised the t-shirt actually read Plasticine Action, he was de-arrested and was free to leave. 'His arrest is not included in the figure of 532 arrests as part of the policing operation that day.' Police initially probed whether it was a gangland hit linked to his former job, but are now treating the tragedy as a murder-suicide. Dawn's heartbroken son Callum Kerr, an actor and singer, and his grieving sister Amanda want their mum left out of her husband's funeral. Advertisement They have 'firmly' requested Andrew's family not to include her in their service and urged Dawn's friends not to go or post pictures of the couple together. Callum and Amanda wrote in a family statement posted on their social media today: 'It would be inappropriate for her memory to be associated with a service honouring the man who, based on all available evidence, may have been responsible for her death.' The siblings claim murder-suicide is the 'prevailing hypothesis', adding: 'There is also no evidence whatsoever of any third party's involvement at this stage'. They will be climbing Sicily's Mount Etna to mark what would have been their mum's 58th birthday on May 18 next year. Dawn was found lying in front of her house, partly undressed, while Andrew was found hanged from a radiator. It remains unclear when exactly the pair died. Kent shopkeeper shames shoplifters online in bid to reduce thefts
A shopkeeper in Kent has come up with an unusual way of stopping thefts from his convenience store. Suki Athwal posts CCTV footage of alleged offenders on social media to publicly shame them and he says a surprising number of them come back and pay. Shop theft is running at record levels, and there are calls for tougher penalties for those who are caught. Kent Police say they take retail crime very seriously and are urging traders to report all offences to them rather than posting information online. Mr Athwal's family have run the Shop Around The Clock convenience store in Tenterden for the last 35 years but recently they've been dismayed by the number of customers who take goods off the shelves and leave without paying. He is now posting CCTV footage of alleged offenders on Facebook. Mr Athwal said: "We just started clipping up videos of when people have stolen from us and posted it online. "I try to make it a bit of joke around it because I think we need to turn the negative into a positive. "We've found now that people are starting to come back to us to pay or their family comes back as they've seen their relative online and they're a bit ashamed and disappointed in them - and that's when I take the post down and that's starting to work for us." Some shopkeepers say they've stopped reporting thefts because nothing happens but Kent Police say they take the crime very seriously. "We've got more officers out on the beat, in town centers, in neighbourhoods. Every ward in Kent has a dedicated, named officer who can be contacted via the Kent Police website. "We engage regularly with local businesses and key partners and stakeholders to understand what their concerns are, particularly around retail crime which is a real priority as a force and organisation so I think we're doing a great deal to try and get out there, be visible, prevent crime and when a crime is reported, do our very best to investigate it thoroughly." Suki Athwal says shop theft has become more of a problem since the cost of living crisis. But this is not a victimless crime. The British Independent Retailers Association says shoplifting is spiralling out of control, costing traders and customers £2.2 billion pounds a year. Last year's figures were the worst on record.
