In Louisville, Kentucky, a city synonymous with bourbon and Southern hospitality, a new kind of Mint Julep has arrived—and it's just in time for the Kentucky Derby.
At Moonsong, the restaurant and bar inside Tempo by Hilton Louisville Downtown NuLu, in Kentucky, guests are sipping on an innovative twist on the traditional Derby Day drink. Dubbed the 'Donerail,' this cocktail reimagines the iconic Mint Julep by blending it with another Southern staple: sweet tea.
'Since there is no 'Derby Day' without a Mint Julep, we wanted to provide our Tempo by Hilton properties with a few options when it came to the signature drink,' says Kevin Quinn, Director of Brand Food & Beverage Programs for Hilton. 'The name is an ode to the 1913 Kentucky Derby winner–the biggest longshot victory in Derby history–and we chose to honor this legend by crossing the Julep with a sweet tea, the beloved beverage in the American South.'
The Donerail is available in both 'Spirited' and 'Free-Spirited' (non-alcoholic) versions, part of a larger program designed by Tempo by Hilton to ensure that every guest—drinker or not—enjoys a premium cocktail experience. 'For us, providing a unique bar program that enables guests to flex between spirited and free-spirited cocktails is one of the many ways we strategically built the Tempo brand to meet the needs of today's modern traveler,' he says.

The boozy Donerail features black tea-infused Maker's Mark bourbon, oleo saccharum, and fresh mint. The tea used is Bluestone Lane's Melbourne Brekky Tea, a full-bodied, organic Ceylon blend. 'This drink is a great example of our collaboration with Bluestone Lane,' says Quinn. 'It's a smooth, full-bodied and malty blend that pulls into the bourbon infusion perfectly.'
But what really sets the Donerail apart is its spirit-free counterpart. Crafted using Lyre's American Malt, it's a zero-proof option that doesn't skimp on complexity or mouthfeel. 'We've found a very happy home partnering with Lyre's,' says Quinn 'We really could not find another alcohol-free alternative that would better enable us to mirror our 'Free-Spirited' drinks to their 'Spirited' counterparts.'

To replicate the boldness of the tea-infused bourbon, the team simply brews the Melbourne Brekky Tea with more potency. 'We utilize the same tea but brewed with more strength than if you were to enjoy it on its own,' says Quinn. 'We do this to mimic the strong notes of black tea that is pulled through in the bourbon infusion.'
Guests can find the Donerail at Moonsong in both the Louisville and Raleigh Tempo by Hilton properties, as well as at Highball in New York and Lovelorn Lounge in Nashville. It's part of a special Kentucky Derby menu running from April 21 through May 3, which includes three Julep options: the classic Mint Julep (with spirited and non-alcoholic versions), a Peach Julep, and the star of the show, the Donerail.

And yes, it's served in a traditional julep cup. 'The Donerail, while not a traditional Mint Julep, should still be served in the traditional Julep, naturally,' says Quinn 'I am thrilled that the Donerail, as well as our other 'Free-Spirited' Mint Julep offerings, can fill a white space that currently exists for revelers that want to celebrate Kentucky Derby festivities without imbibing alcohol,' says Quinn. 'It is truly important to us that the 'Free-Spirited' selections mirror the 'Spirited' cocktails in every way – presentation, flavor profile, mouthfeel, and sophistication.'

Another to put that would be to say, if Baeza had had another quarter-mile in front of him in the Kentucky Derby, Journalism would be the show horse. And another way to put that would be to say, although Saratoga has drawn a modestly-sized field, it's jam-packed with athletic talent. But before we get into what Bob Baffert and his onrushing front-runner Rodriguez have in mind for the top three, here are the freshly drawn post positions and the Saratoga morning line. (Source: NYRA, 6/3/2025) Piquant in the Saratoga draw is the fact that Journalism will be breaking just a stall to the outside of the horse that nearly beat him in the Derby, and both of them have a fair shot at settling in the early going. But the fact that matters more is that Journalism ran back in the Preakness, and did it quite well, just two weeks back. Sovereignty's Derby victory in the last furlong over Journalism was quite decisive, and the horse came out of the race well, but trainer Bill Mott and the Sovereignty connections decided with fair dispatch that Sovereignty would sit out the Preakness to return now. John Shirreffs and the Baeza team decided the same. Rodriguez missed both the Derby and the Preakness with his foot injury, which has been given a sterling stamp of full recovery. The point, which we'll be hearing about ad infinitum this week, is that the four most dangerous horses to Journalism in the Belmont are spanking fresh. And he's not.

Journalism opens as the Belmont favorite. Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty is the 2nd choice
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Kentucky Derby runner-up and Preakness winner Journalism opened as the 8-5 favorite in the Belmont Stakes when post positions were drawn Monday for the final leg of the Triple Crown. Derby winner Sovereignty was set as the second choice on the morning line at odds of 2-1 and drew the No. 2 post. Journalism, near the outside with the No. 7 post, is the only horse running in all three Triple Crown races. 'He's been kind of the same horse since July of last summer,' trainer Michael McCarthy said. 'He does everything you'd ask a good horse to do: He eats well, trains well, acts well. I thought through the last six, seven weeks here, his energy's been the same throughout.' Sovereignty is back after owners and trainer Bill Mott opted to skip the Preakness and run the Belmont on five weeks of rest, and things have gone swimmingly since he arrived at historic Saratoga Race Couse. 'We've been very lucky with everything that's gone on sine he's been here,' Mott said. 'He's been moving well over the track.' Sovereignty and Journalism in the field set up this Belmont, the second at Saratoga while renovations are made to its usual home on Long Island, to be a rematch between the first two Triple Crown winners who were also first and second the Derby. 'He's improved, as I think as many of these horses have,' Mott said of Sovereignty. 'I think this entire group, if you look at their form and the way they've developed over the course of this year, I think they've made steady progress and it should be an interesting race." No. 6 Baeza, who finished third in Kentucky on the first Saturday in May, opened at 4-1. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's Rodriguez, who was scratched from the Derby because of a minor foot bruise and held out of the Preakness, was next at 6-1 and will leave the starting gate from the No. 3 post. The field of eight horses also includes No. 8 Heart of Honor, tied for the longest shot on the board at 30-1 after finishing fifth in the Preakness. New to the Triple Crown trail are No. 1 Hill Road (10-1), No. 5 Crudo (15-1) and No. 4 Uncaged (30-1). Journalism, who was favorited in the Derby and the Preakness and at the moment is the top 3-year-old in the country, looks like the horse to beat. 'Saratoga is very good for horses,' McCarthy said.
