3 facing smuggling-related charges after 44 migrants intercepted in Quebec: CBSA
CBSA says RCMP and Quebec provincial police intercepted the vehicle with dozens of people aboard near Stanstead, Que. overnight between Saturday to Sunday.
The agency says Ogulcan Mersin, 25, and Dogan Alakus and Firat Yuksek, both 31, have been charged with inducing, aiding or abetting someone to commit an offence under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act as well as assisting people to enter Canada outside of a designated customs office.

CBSA says most of the foreign nationals were transferred to the CBSA's refugee processing centre in St-Bernard-de-Lacolle where they are subject to immigration examinations.
The agency did not say what happened to the remaining foreign nationals.

A man who escaped from a police vehicle during his arrest in a northern Manitoba First Nation late last month was found hiding in a shed in the community, police say. Roberto Easter, 30, was initially arrested for allegedly breaching conditions in Chemawawin Cree Nation on July 21, RCMP previously said. He escaped a police vehicle with the help of a 28-year-old woman he knew and fled into dense brush, police said. Police said they found Easter in a shed in Chemawawin on Monday, following a lengthy search and tips from the public, according to a Tuesday news release. He's been charged with escaping lawful custody and three counts of failing to comply with a release order. The 28-year-old woman, who like Easter is from Chemawawin, was previously arrested and charged with escaping lawful custody, resisting/obstructing police officers and uttering threats. Chemawawin Cree Nation is about 400 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

They are accused of inducing, aiding or abetting individuals to enter Canada illegally, and of facilitating entry at a location other than a designated customs office. All three men remain in custody and are expected to appear in court on Wednesday. Miguel Bégin, the CBSA's east border district director, told Radio-Canada on Monday that most of the migrants were transferred to the agency's processing centre in St-Bernard-de-Lacolle, where they are undergoing immigration examinations to determine their eligibility for asylum. Some were already returned yesterday because they did not meet the Safe Third Country Agreement exemption criteria,' Bégin said. Asylum seekers who arrive in the U.S. before reaching Canada are usually turned back due to the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA), which requires that they seek asylum in the first safe country they arrive in. There are exceptions to the agreement, including being married to a Canadian citizen. The agency says the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges may be laid. As of the end of July, the CBSA had processed 22,237 asylum claims across Canada, which is down just under 50 per cent from 41,187 at the same point last year. Spain dismantles smuggling ring moving migrants to Canada with fake passports: police

(THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jonathan Hayward) Spanish police say they have dismantled a criminal network that facilitated illegal entry into Canada and the U.K. using forged passports and travel documents. In a press release by Spain's National Police, the smuggling operation primarily targeted Yemeni nationals and involved more than 40 migration attempts. The network allegedly charged each migrant up to C$4,400. According to Spanish authorities, the investigation began in September 2024 after the Canada Border Services Agency tipped off Spanish police about several Yemeni citizens attempting to travel to Canada from airports in Spain using fake documents. Eleven people, including the alleged ringleader, have been arrested across several areas in Spain. Spanish police worked in collaboration with Europol and law enforcement agencies from countries including Switzerland, Finland, Austria, Germany, Ireland and the U.K. Police said migrants would first obtain refugee documents in Greece then travel to a European airport. Once inside the international transit area, the migrants would allegedly receive a boarding pass and counterfeit passport from a member of the network. Spanish police co-ordinated raids in Madrid and the northern towns of Santoña and Torrelavega. During the searches, officers seized 10 mobile phones, a forged passport and documents related to flight bookings. Spanish police say the investigation remains ongoing.
