Jamie Murray voices Wimbledon warning after Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek wins

Daily Mirror4 days ago
Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek claimed maiden titles at Wimbledon, less than a year after they both served suspensions for doping breaches, and that is problematic for tennis
Tennis has an image problem after Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek triumphed at Wimbledon, according to Jamie Murray. Sinner and Swiatek claimed maiden singles titles at the All England Club less than a year after serving doping suspensions, reigniting a debate about how their cases were handled.

Swiatek demolished Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 before Sinner overcame Carlos Alcaraz in a four-set match the following day. It was Swiatek's sixth Grand Slam title and Sinner's fourth and with the duo 24 and 23 years old respectively, they are likely to dominate the sport for years to come.

That poses a potential problem for tennis, given their recent misdemeanours. Swiatek served a one-month suspension last year after testing positive for trimetazidine (TMZ), a drug normally used as heart medication for its ability to enhance blood flow, while Sinner failed two drug tests after banned steroid clostebol was found in his system.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency accepted Swiatek's explanation that a batch of melatonin, a supplement she uses to manage jet lag, had become contaminated with TMZ. Her short ban was because the ITIA put her at the bottom of their 'no significant fault or negligence' range.
Sinner claimed the presence of clostebol, which is a steroid that can be used to build muscle mass, was the result of contamination from his physio, who had been using a spray to treat a cut on his own hand. Nick Kyrgios has been among those to voice their concerns about the process and seven-time doubles Grand Slam champion Murray agrees.
'It's not a great look, right? The two champions of potentially the most prestigious tennis event having served doping bans,' he told Mirror Sport.

'It's more just the fact that it's not announced straight away that this is what's going on, so then of course people think there are cover-ups and conspiracy theories are going all over the place. Maybe I'm naive. I don't want to believe that people are cheating and trying to get an edge. I don't really want to think that about the sport that I'm in.
'I'm sure there will always be people that will try to bend rules and stuff but, the thing with tennis is it's such a skilled sport. If I started taking drugs tomorrow it's not like I'm suddenly going to be number one in the world. Of course, for those guys who are already at the top, like every little gain can make a big difference but I don't know. To be honest, I try not to think about it and to stress myself about it.

'Only they know if they did right or wrong, but I think it's probably not the best look. Stuff happens and if they're innocent then they obviously deserve to be out there competing. They served the suspensions that the relative authorities set for them. That's that. You have to move on and keep competing.
'The tour goes on, the show goes on, but it's not ideal having the number one athletes in men's and women's tennis both getting caught out with doping stuff. It's a shame. But I don't know in the larger picture how much effect that's having on them or on the sport.'

Murray is still competing on the doubles circuit at the age of 39 and has no plans to retire, with the love of competing still burning bright. Things didn't go to plan at Wimbledon, where he suffered two first-round exits with Rajeev Ram and Emily Appleton, but the Scot recently earned himself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
He and fellow Brit Laura Robson managed a rally of 101 shots while strapped to the roof of a car travelling up to 29mph down an airfield runway. 'It was a cool experience and obviously not something I'd ever done before so I didn't really quite know what to expect,' Murray said.
'We had to figure out how best to do it because we're both left-handed, so naturally you would hit forehand to forehand, but that means one of us would have to hit backwards against the direction the car is moving, so we had to figure that out. But I guess we did a decent job.'
Jamie Murray and Laura Robson broke a Guinness World record by completing a rally of 101 consecutive shots as the Lexus NX became the latest court for the stars to play on.

The Open 2025: People are only just realising how old Scottie Scheffler actually is

Scottie Scheffler won The Open Championship on Sunday, and there are people who are only just starting to realise the world No.1's actual age following his victory at Royal Portrush Scottie Scheffler winning The Open has led some more casual golf fans to come to a realisation about his age. The American stormed to victory at Royal Portrush to claim the fourth major title of his career. ‌ Scheffler carded three-under-par on Sunday to maintain his overnight four-shot lead and claim The Open Championship. He ended the weekend on 17-under and is now a US Open title away from completing a career Grand Slam, having also twice won the Masters and clinched the PGA Championship. ‌ That list of achievements is made even more impressive by the fact that he won his first major as recently as April 2022. Scheffler could dominate the sport for many years, as his victory at The Open has led many fans to realise that the world No.1 is still only 29 years old. ‌ A section of fans were left surprised by Scheffler's age due to his prowess on the golf course and more mature appearance. One fan posted on X: ' Scottie Scheffler feels like the oldest 29-year-old ever.' A second said: 'How is Scottie Scheffler 29? Man looks about 45. What a golfer though.' A third shared their surprise: 'I struggle to believe Scottie Scheffler is 29. That is a 45-year-old man. Still very handsome tho.' A fourth fan discussed his potential legacy within the sport: 'Scottie Scheffler is only 29, in golf terms that's young. He's on his way to eventually being called the greatest golfer of all time.' ‌ A fifth fan echoed those thoughts: 'Scottie Scheffler is the most dominant golfer since Tiger. He's just smoking this field. How long can he keep this pace up? He just turned 29, still really young.' Another posted: 'I was surprised to find out recently that Scheffler is still only 29. He's still got another good 20 years left.' Scheffler recorded his best-ever score at a major on day two, carding seven-under on his way to another victory. The four-time major winner successfully navigated the conditions at Portrush and finished seven strokes ahead of Rory McIlroy, who finished T7 and was heavily supported by the crowd in Northern Ireland. ‌ "Thank you so much to the fans this week for all the support,' Scheffler said after his win. 'I know I wasn't the fan favourite today, but I did hear a lot of 'USA' and 'Dallas, Texas' chants, so I appreciate you guys for coming out to support. "Overall, it's been a great week. The fan support all week was tremendous. It was a ton of fun to get to play here – I got to play with Shane [Lowry] the first couple of days, and for you guys to come out and support Shane the way you did was special, and it was a really fun week to get to play in front of such a great crowd." Scheffler's ascendency has begun to ignite discussions over whether he could be the golfer to equal Tiger Woods' legacy. However, as Scheffler admitted, he still has some way to go to match Woods' tally of 15 major championships. ‌ "I still think they're a bit silly,' Scheffler said of the comparisons. 'Tiger won, what, 15 majors? This is my fourth. I just got one-fourth of the way there. I think Tiger stands alone in the game of golf. "He was inspirational for me growing up. He was a very, very talented guy, and he was a special person to be able to be as good as he was at the game of golf. I don't focus on that kind of stuff." McIlroy, who completed his career Grand Slam by winning the Masters in April, has conceded that Scheffler is currently the man to beat. Speaking ahead of the final round, McIlroy said: "Whenever you're trying to chase down a guy like that, it's hard to do. He's incredibly impressive. Yeah, look, Scottie is, it's inevitable."

Tragic life of Dog the Bounty Hunter - tortured childhood, wedding horror and shock deaths

As Dog the Bounty Hunter's step-grandson dies in a 'tragic accident,' we take a look at the personal heartbreaks the US TV star has endured throughout his life American TV personality Dog the Bounty Hunter is in mourning after his step-grandson Anthony Zecca was killed in an horrific accident at the weekend. ‌ The shocking incident in which the 13 year old boy - the son of Dog's stepson Gregory - was shot and killed i s believed to have happened at around 8pm on Saturday July 20 in an apartment in Naples, Florida. ‌ Dog and his wife Francie released a statement to TMZ through a representative. It read: "We are grieving as a family over this incomprehensible tragic accident and would ask for continued prayers as we grieve the loss of our beloved grandson, Anthony." ‌ Gregory, who is Francie's child from a previous marriage, is part of Dog's bounty hunting crew. He became part of Dog's personal life when he married Francie in 2021. Gregory has previously shared his passions for guns in social media posts. In one he is seen showing Anthony how to use a rifle while at a shooting range. ‌ This latest tragedy is not the first Dog, whose real name is Duane Chapman, has endured. Here we take a look at the heartbreak and drama that has filled the 72 year old's eventful life. Childhood abuse Duane was raised with his three siblings by their church minister mother and their father who was a US Army officer in Denver, Colorado. In his 2017 memoir, You Can Run But You Can't Hide, he claimed his dad abused him with beatings which he thought was to toughen him up and was a normal way to be treated. "Because of my religious upbringing, I thought my dad was punishing me for being a terrible sinner," he wrote, according to The Express. "Until very recently, I never understood that none of his abuse was my fault. I just thought that was how all dads treated their sons." ‌ He said he was expected to take the beatings like a man: "But I wasn't a man. I was a young boy looking for love and approval from my father. I was desperate for his affection, so I ignored the pain," he wrote. Murder sentence Back in 1976 a young Dog was convicted of first-degree murder relating to the death of Jerry Oliver in Pampa, Texas. He was waiting in a car when his friend shot and killed an alleged drug dealer while trying to buy cannabis. ‌ Despite Duane not directly being involved in the murder, the law in Texas states that anyone indirectly involved can be charged. He was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to five years in prison but only served 18 months. Commenting on the conviction he said: "It's something that follows you the rest of your life, no matter who you become or who you are. I'm not proud of it." ‌ Afterwards he chose to pursue a career upholding the law through bounty hunting. He shot to fame starring in A&E show Dog The Bounty Hunter, which followed him as he tried to catch bail jumpers. The show ran for eight seasons from 2004. However because of his conviction he is forbidden from using firearms, which is why he uses a taser instead of a gun in his work. Daughter's tragic death ‌ On the morning of his wedding to fifth wife Beth Smith, Dog was told his 23-year-old daughter, Barbara Katie Chapman, had died the day before in Alaska. She was a passenger in a stolen SUV that crashed into a tree after leaving the road. The driver also died in the accident and authorities suspected drugs or alcohol may have been a factor. The family decided to go ahead with the wedding to honour Barbara's memory. She left behind a nine year old son Travis Drake Lee. ‌ Grandson's 'abuse' Dog was temporarily given custody of Travis after a tape was handed to court which allegedly contained evidence Travis was being physically abused by his father, Travis Mimms. The TV star previously said: "To hear the audiotape of my grandson being abused was torture." Dog and wife Beth took care of the child but insisted they didn't want to take him away from his dad: "I want him [Mimms Sr.] to take parenting classes. We had to get Travis [Jr.] out of that situation," he said. ‌ Long lost son In 1994 Dog discovered he had a son he knew nothing about with ex-girlfriend Debbie White. Christopher Hecht was born in 1972, while Duane was in prison. After Debbie died by suicide in 1978, Christopher was adopted by Keith and Gloria Hecht. ‌ She said she initially told Dog to keep away but that he contacted him anyway. "He then reached out to Christopher for the first time when he was 19," she told The Sun. "When he learned Duane was his father, he was ecstatic. They started a relationship." Christopher has had his own share of struggles and scrapes with the law. In 2021 he was sentenced to three years in jail in Colorado for a menacing charge. Dog vowed to help his son when he was released from prison. Death of beloved wife Beth Chapman In 2017 Beth was diagnosed with stage two throat cancer. Her battle with the disease was documented in A&E special Dog & Beth: Fight of Their Lives. After initial treatment she was given the all-clear, but the cancer returned in 2018. ‌ On June 26 2019, Beth was put into a medically induced coma and died aged 51 at The Queen's Medical Centre in Honolulu. Dog announced her death on Twitter. He wrote: "It's 5:32 in Hawaii, this is the time she would wake up to go hike Koko Head mountain. Only today, she hiked the stairway to heaven. We all love you, Beth. See you on the other side." ‌ Although he vowed to never marry again, less than a year after she passed, Dog had proposed to his new girlfriend, Francie Frane. The couple connected through their shared grief - Francie's husband Bob had died not long before Beth. "We understood the pain that the other one was feeling and [in] those tough days and moments, we helped each other stand up," Francie told Entertainment Tonight. "We could cry with each other and talk about what we were feeling. We were able to walk alongside each other through the pain and heartbreak and it brought us together in this amazing way." They married in 2021. Death of colleague David Robinson was a member of Dog's crew. He died suddenly aged 50 in 2022 while on a Zoom call. His ex wife later confirmed the cause of death was critical coronary artery disease. Dog said he was "shocked and saddened" by his co-star and "right-hand man's" passing.
