Revenue officers seize almost €3 million worth of cannabis at Shannon Airport

Revenue officers have made a major drugs seizure at Shannon Airport.
As a result of routine operations, Revenue officers seized 149kgs of herbal cannabis at the Co Clare airport on Friday morning.
The illegal drugs, which have an estimated value of €2,980,000, were discovered in parcels originating from Canada and was destined for an address in Clare.
Investigations are ongoing, a Revenue spokesperson said.
This seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting organised crime groups and the importation, sale and supply of illegal drugs. If businesses, or members of the public have any information, they can contact Revenue in confidence on 1800 295 295.
It is the latest in several major seizures made by either gardaí or Revenue over the past two weeks.
On Friday, Gardaí seized €210,000 of suspected cocaine as part of an operation targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs in the Dublin Metropolitan Region South Central area.
The seizure was made during the course of a search of a residence in the Dublin 8 area. The drugs seized are now subject to analysis by Forensic Science Ireland.
Two men, aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested in connection with the investigation. They have since been charged with offences under the misuse of drugs act, and appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice (CCJ) this afternoon, Saturday, 24 May.
Meanwhile, Gardaí seized a number of weapons, including knives, baseball bats and a firearm, alongside a quantity of drugs in Dublin on Thursday.
Officers attached to the Serious Crime West and DMR North Units and the Ballymun Community Response Team seized the weapons, which consisted of four knives, two baseball bats and a gun with ammo, following a search operation in Ballymun.
Alongside the weapons, Gardaí seized a number of bags of cannabis as well as cocaine and heroin.
Earlier this month, a teenager was arrested and charged after she was found with over half a million euros of cannabis in Dublin Airport.
Revenue officers seized the 26.10kgs of herbal cannabis, with an estimated value of approximately €522,000, in Dublin Airport on Thursday, May 15, as part of an intelligence-led operation.
The cannabis was discovered concealed in vacuum-packed packages within the baggage of a passenger who had disembarked from a flight from Abu Dhabi.
A female in her late teens was subsequently arrested by An Garda Síochána in relation to the seizure and was detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at a Dublin Garda Station. She has since been charged and has been before the court.

Grandmother handed three-year restraining order over online abuse of daughter and grandchildren

A JUDGE HAS imposed a three-year restraining order on a Dublin grandmother, barring her from posting online about her daughter after she allegedly harassed her and wished death on her grandchildren. The young woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, resorted to using anti-stalking laws and applied for the order at Dublin District Court. However, her estranged mother did not attend the scheduled hearing to contest the claims against her. 'My mother is harassing me,' her adult daughter told Judge Anthony Halpin, adding that she had been subjected to online abuse, including 'she hopes my kids die'. Asked why this happened, the woman, in her twenties, explained that she had been taken into care when she was young and there had been a fractured relationship since. She told the court that the posts started nine weeks ago after five years of no contact. Advertisement The woman believed her mother was 'retaliating for having no contact with or access to her grandchildren'. On reviewing printouts of the posts, Judge Halpin stated he was satisfied the woman had made a reasonable case for a civil restraining order barring unwanted contact and online posts about the applicant. He held that it was appropriate to compel the respondent from harassing or placing her daughter in fear. Judge Halpin said gardaí would serve the order on the grandmother, and the court had a wide range of sanctions available if she broke the terms. Breaching them can result in the subject of the order being brought to court, jailed for up to a year and a maximum €4,000 fine. The restraining orders were introduced in the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023 as a remedy for people seeking protection. The District Court may issue an order to prevent the respondent from violence or threats, stalking, harassing or approaching the applicant's home, work, or school. It can run for up to five years, but may be shorter depending on the presiding judge's assessment.

Louth man smashed up car owned by ex partner's new boyfriend ‘in fit of rage'

Keith Shelbourne, Avenue One, Yellowbatter, Drogheda, came forward on a signed plea of guilty to a charge of criminal damage at Ellwood, Ballymakenny Road, Drogheda, on October 29, 2023. The car he targetted, a 2017 Audi A5, was written off by insurers. He handed over €10,000 compensation. The court heard that Mr Shelbourne and the lady had broken up. They had a child together. On this occasion he turned up at a house in the early hours of the morning after seeing her in a car with someone else. He began kicking the Audi and shouted for the other man to come outside. The defendant hit the car with a rock, smashing its windows. He used a child's scooter to smash the rest of the windows and break off the wing mirrors. All the while the victim was videoing the incident which was reported to Gardaí at 1.05am. Gda Dara Quinn said that Mr Shelbourne, who has no previous convictions, accepted that he smashed up the vehicle. He didn't express much remorse. The €25,500 vehicle was written off by the insurance company. The witness agreed with counsel that this occurred 'in a fit of rage'. There was no indication of any violence in the defendant's previous relationship, while the two men were not known to each other and had no further contact. The compensation was accepted. ADVERTISEMENT In a Victim Impact Statement, the man said that he had recently purchased the car. As a result of what happened he had to buy a cheap van to get to work. His insurance premium had more than doubled from €450 to €950. It was stated on behalf of the accused that he had shared access to his son and that the relationship with the boy's mother was amicable again. He wrote a letter of apology. He regretted the harm he caused. Mr Shelbourne was in full-time work and the sole carer for his mother who had suffered a stroke. It was a substantial amount of compensation for him to put together. He was willing to pay more. Judge Dara Hayes remarked that the context of this was a concern. "An attack on a former girlfriend's new boyfriend. I find that troubling and concerning. She's entitled to move on.' It was a particularly serious offence. Although the word had not been mentioned, he described it as jealousy, The judge said he would seek the guidance of the Probation Service and adjourned sentencing for a report on October 7.
