It's not a sound commonly associated with birds.
But a colony of flesh-footed shearwaters 'crack and crunch' because they've consumed so much plastic, experts have revealed.
Lord Howe, a small volcanic island off Australia's east coast, is home to around 44,000 shearwaters – also known as mutton birds.
Once born, their chicks are in their burrows for 90 days and should be getting a diet of fish and squid from their parents.
But mum and dad are accidentally feeding them meals of plastic – including balloon clips, pieces of LEGO, pen lids, bottle tops and wheels from a toy car.
Scientists once found a record 778 pieces of plastic in an 80-day-old seabird chick.
And they say every single bird now has 50 or more pieces in their stomach.
Dr Alex Bond, senior curator in charge of birds at the Natural History Museum, has been documenting threats to the island's bird life since 2009.
'The parents lay one egg a year and that hatches in late January,' he said.
'The parents then spend the next three months going out into the Tasman Sea, collecting food or plastic, bringing it back and feeding the chick.'
Plastic can account for up to 10 per cent of the chick's total body weight, leaving no room for real food.
Dr Bond explained that plastic can also absorb toxins in the ocean, end up in a bird's stomach and release these toxins into the bloodstream.
Along with scientists from the Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation and the University of Tasmania, he has been measuring contaminants in the birds' blood and feathers.
They also study tissue damage to the birds' internal organs, and examine plastic from inside their stomachs.
Sadly, they find dead or dying birds on Lord Howe Island's beaches most mornings.
Once chicks emerge from their burrows they head for the water. Those which are too weak to face the ocean can easily be rolled by the waves and drown.
The team take the birds back to their lab and empty their stomachs – most of which are filled with countless large chunks and pieces of plastic.
They also flush the stomachs of living birds by gently pumping seawater into them, which causes the bird to vomit it back up into a bucket.
Anything they have eaten that is lodged in their belly – such as plastic – comes back up with it.
'These are chicks that have been accidentally fed all this plastic by their parents,' Dr Bond said.
'They haven't even fledged the nest yet by the time this amount of rubbish accumulates in their systems, but they will eventually be expected to migrate from Australia to Japan on their own.
'With that amount of material inside them, many will never make it.'
He said in some instances, he can feel and hear 'crunching' when holding the birds.
Previous studies into the birds have found that those with the most plastic in their stomachs have higher concentrations of toxic contaminants in their tissues.
In 2023 Dr Bond and his team came up with the name 'plasticosis' to describe the disease where plastic repeatedly digging into the bird's stomach can cause irritation.
Population data suggests that the number of flesh-footed shearwaters on Lord Howe island has dropped significantly.
The Natural History Museum says people can help by cutting down on single-use plastics like water bottles and coffee cups, and recycling where possible.
Concerned citizens should report birds tangled in plastic or other debris to help scientists understand more about the scale and spread of plastic pollution.
HOW DOES PLASTIC KILL TURTLES?
Sea turtles live in the ocean and feed on vegetation and algae floating in the waters.
Unfortunately, many pieces of litter discarded by humans pollute these waters and resemble food.
The sea turtles mistake them for nutrition and consume them.
This plastic then enters their digestive tract and causes havoc to the animal's innards.
A study in 2018 found eating a single piece of plastic increases the turtles chance of death.
Researchers found there it caused a one in five chance of death - rising to 50 per cent for 14 pieces.
Turtles have a digestive tract which means they are physically incapable of regurgitation.
Once something has been eaten, it stays in the animal unless it can be defecated.
Once inside the animal, if a piece of plastic covers an organ or blocks a key canal, it can create a fatal blockage.
Plastic blockages stopping the passing of food or faeces can kill turtles, but harder pieces can also inflict fatal internal injuries.

At first it looked like a great silver streak on the sand. An oarfish, fantastically long and rarely seen, had washed up on Tasmania's rugged west coast. Oarfish, one of the ocean's longest fish, are astonishing creatures that grow up to eight metres long. Nicknamed the 'king of herrings' or more unkindly the 'doomsday fish', some legends and stories consider the animals to be harbingers of disaster. Sybil Robertson made the unusual discovery while walking on Ocean Beach near Strahan, on Monday. 'When I go out there, I'm the only person on the beach,' she said. 'It's really wild. There's nothing between here and Argentina.' On Monday, she walked in a different direction than usual and noticed a group of sea eagles inspecting the fish, which she estimated was around three metres long, on the sand. 'I'm five foot nine, and I've got a reasonable stride, [it was] a good three-and-a-bit paces,' she said. 'It was fantastic,' she said, although not realising what it was. 'I just knew it was something unusual and weird.' But her find was quickly identified as an oarfish when she posted a photo on the Citizen Scientists of Tasmania social media page. 'Its exceptionally unusual to see anything like that,' said assoc prof Neville Barrett, a marine ecologist at the University of Tasmania. Oarfish are an 'epipelagic' species, he said, living in the open ocean at mid-water depths of 150 to 500m, from where they are rarely seen or caught. 'We're just not out there,' Barrett said. 'We're not looking, we're not diving, we're not even fishing in that part of the ocean.' Oarfish are 'a phenomenally big fish' he said, which can weigh more than 400kg. He described them as a lazy fish with very little muscle that tends to float around, often vertically in the water, eating various types of plankton. 'They're not active feeders. They don't chase their prey. They're just nibbling on whatever's there. So they don't have to be very strong, or great swimmers,' he said. Very few people have seen an oarfish in the wild. Marine biologist Jorja Gilmore is 'one of the lucky ones'. In 2022, she was leading a small tour group of snorkelers on the Great Barrier Reef near Port Douglas when they spotted something strange in the water below them. This one was a juvenile, long and thin like a ruler, with tendrils that made it look a bit like a giant lure, Gilmore said. 'It was so bizarre', she said, 'like something from the deep sea'. The incredibly rare encounter is thought to be the first recorded with this species on the east coast of Australia. 'It's still the best thing I have seen in the water to this day,' Gilmore said. Robinson feels fortunate to have come across the fish in such good condition. A few hours later the head was gone, and the body was already decimated by crows and eagles, she said. 'It's just so interesting what you can find if you just keep your eyes open whilst you're looking around. It's just amazing.'

Thousands of humpback whales have begun their migration from Antarctica to Australia, with a pod appearing in the Sydney harbour on Monday and momentarily halting ferry services. A group of three to four whales surfaced near Manly Wharf on Monday afternoon, causing the Freshwater ferry service to pause for about five minutes, according to Transport for NSW. The sighting follows several other appearances in the harbour over the weekend and comes during the annual migration of humpback whales. The migration sees up to 40,000 humpback whales journeying from the cold feeding grounds of Antarctica to the warmer waters off Queensland and Western Australia to breed and give birth. The northward migration, often referred to as the "humpback highway," covers almost 10,000km and is one of the longest migrations of any mammal. The migrating whales tend to swim closer to the shore, making them more visible to onlookers. 'Anywhere you can see the ocean, you have a chance of spotting a whale,' Dr Vanessa Pirotta, a marine scientist, told The Guardian, adding that peak migration season was 'pretty much like whale peak hour' along Australia's east coast. Researchers are now seeing changes in the humpback migration pattern, however. A recent study, published in Frontiers in Marine Science, notes humpback calves being born much further south than expected, including off the Tasmania coast and New Zealand 's South Island, which are not traditionally considered calving grounds. They say the shift may be linked to the waters getting warmer due to rising ocean temperatures. Although the humpbacks continue to recover from near-extinction due to commercial whaling, with latest estimates of their population ranging from 30,000 to 50,000, conservationists say the species remains vulnerable to human impact, especially during the migration season. Entanglement in fishing gear is one of the biggest threats. In an effort to reduce such risks, OceanWatch Australia and similar groups are running initiatives like the East Coast Whale Entanglement Mitigation Programme, which is trialling modified gear designs. The humpback migration typically peaks in June and July but is expected to continue through to October, with the whales returning south with newborn calves. Scientists say this year's observations will be key to understanding how these iconic mammals are adapting to a warming ocean.
