Brumbies go top, Moana Pasifika celebrate
The ACT Brumbies are top of the Super Rugby Pacific table with a 24-14 win over the Queensland Reds, but defending champions the Blues slipped out of the knockout qualification places after a first-ever loss to Moana Pasifika.
The Brumbies, who have played a game more than the teams around them near the top of the table, have 43 points from 13 matches, ahead of the Waikato-based Chiefs and Crusaders (Canterbury), who both have 41.
There are two regular season rounds left to play.
Tries from Alan Alaalatoa, Andy Muirhead and Tom Wright, the latter two early in the second half, secured a fifth successive victory for the Brumbies over the Reds in Canberra on Saturday night.
The game had been level at 7-7 at halftime following Tim Ryan's early score for the visitors. Replacement hooker Josh Nasser also crossed for the Reds.
The Crusaders dished out a 48-33 defeat to the New South Wales Waratahs that hit the beleaguered Australian side's hopes of reaching the knockout stage and prompted coach Dan McKellar to question his team's commitment.
The defeat on Friday at Sydney Football Stadium leaves the Waratahs in eighth on 22 points, six adrift of the final berth available for the post-season competition, which is currently filled by Moana Pasifika.
"A pretty passive display," said McKellar. "Didn't want to fold around the corner, guys loping on the short side, losing collisions and they took advantage of it.
"We've just got to run hard, tackle hard and show that we actually care."
The Crusaders' dominance in the opening 40 minutes saw them storm clear, with the visitors establishing a healthy 31-7 lead before tries from forwards Langi Gleeson and Miles Amatosero saw the Waratahs reduce the deficit early in the second half.
However, a record-equalling try from Sevu Reece allowed them to regain their composure, the centre sprinting almost half the length of the field to touch down for the 65th time in Super Rugby and tie the mark held by TJ Perenara.
"Feels good to get that try, it got to a point this season where I didn't think I was going to score a try," Reece said.
The Blues slipped out of the qualification places for the knockout rounds as captain Ardie Savea inspired Moana Pasifika to a 27-21 win over the Auckland-based side on Saturday night at North Harbour Stadium.
Centre Kyren Taumoefolau scored a hat-trick of tries, including two in the second half that swung the game in Moana's favour as Tana Umaga's team climbed into the top six with their first-ever win over the Blues.
"I'm proud of the efforts of the boys, for standing up against a quality Blues side and I'm just happy to get the win," Savea said.
Cam Roigard dived across the line after the hooter for the Wellington Hurricanes that secured the hosts a 24-20 win over the Otago Highlanders on Friday.
The win takes the Hurricanes to 30 points and fifth place, while the Highlanders dropped to the bottom of the standings after the Fijian Drua won 38-7 against the Western Force.
Forward Elia Canakaivata scored two tries at Churchill Park in Lautoka to take Glen Jackson's side above the Highlanders.

Former Irish prop to coach stags
New Southland Stags coach Nathan White will have a hectic start to his provincial coaching career. White, a former Irish prop, who played for Waikato and the Chiefs, was named as co-coach for the side in something of a surprise move. He is expected in the South sometime later this month. No firm starting date could be provided. Rugby Southland in a statement last week said head of performance and Stags co-coach Matt Saunders was moving on. He was taking up an opportunity with Foodstuffs and operating the Otatara Four Square. Saunders, who had been in the role since 2022, previously operated the Tapanui Four Square. White is a former Toyota Verblitz forwards coach, having worked alongside former All Black coaches Ian Foster and Steve Hansen. White will be the co-coach with James Wilson. Union pathways manager Scott Eade has been promoted to assistant coach for the side, with responsibility for defence. Speaking on Saunders' departure, Rugby Southland chief executive Hua Tamariki acknowledged the mixed emotions within the organisation. "While we're gutted to see Matt go. He leaves with my full support and that of everyone involved in our union," Tamariki said. He said the timing was far from ideal, but the situation was outside Saunders' control. "We've had to act quickly to ensure we maintain continuity and momentum heading into this year's NPC campaign." Tamariki paid tribute to Saunders and said he was a steady and dependable leader. Eade had the full support of the union. "He's self-driven, an exceptional planner, and possesses a unique ability to connect with players across all levels. His inclusion in the Stags' coaching group was always a matter of when, not if," Tamariki said. Tamariki said White should fit in easily. "Originally from Waikato, Nathan has a deep connection to provincial rugby and will fit seamlessly into our community. His skills and leadership will be a great complement to James and the entire coaching group as we move closer to NPC kick-off." White played for Waikato and the Chiefs. In Ireland, he played for Leinster and Connacht. He played 13 tests for Ireland in 2015-16 before retiring because of concussion in 2016. He started his coaching career by helping out at Connacht. Rugby Southland also confirmed last year's forwards coach, Kane Thompson, would be unable to return in 2025 due to international coaching commitments with Manu Samoa. Daryl Thompson will be the set piece coach and Marty McKenzie the skills coach. Southland's first game of the NPC is against Otago in Invercargill on August 2.— APL

Rugby: Chiefs captain extends stay and targets 100 game milestone
Luke Jacobson captain of the Chiefs. Photo: Jeremy Ward Chiefs captain Luke Jacobson has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby for another two years. The loose forward made his Chiefs debut in in 2018 and has earned 88 caps for the side. After making his All Blacks debut the following year, he has played 23 games for New Zealand. Currently in his second year as Chiefs captain, Jacobson has guided the Super Rugby Pacific side through back-to-back finals campaigns and is excited about what the team can achieve together in the coming years. "It's not just the results that keep you around - it's the environment and the team culture. Between the coaches, management, and the players, there's a good group of people here and they make it pretty hard to leave," Jacobson said. "I really enjoy my rugby here. I'm able to grow my game and grow my leadership. I grew up supporting this team and after playing with them for eight years, it's a team that continues to really align with my values. "I'd love to play 100 games for the Chiefs, it would be a huge milestone for me and one I would be really proud to achieve." Outgoing Chiefs head coach Clayton McMillan said Jacobson's leadership had been key in shaping the character of the team. "He leads with integrity humility, and total commitment to the jersey and that's respected by everyone. His decision to re-sign speaks volumes about the culture we've built and the direction we're heading."
