Amazon shifts its podcast strategy, eliminating 100 Wondery jobs

Amazon disassembled its podcast company Wondery on Aug 4, announcing a reorganisation that reflects the industry's broader upheaval in recent years. Wondery's audio-only podcasts – such as the true-crime hits 'Dr. Death' and 'Dirty John' – will be now be overseen by Audible, the audiobook arm of Amazon, and earn money primarily through subscriptions. But its splashy video shows, such as the Kelce brothers' 'New Heights' and Dax Shepard's 'Armchair Expert,' will operate within a new Amazon division called Creator Services. Amazon will continue selling advertising for these hosts, but will also explore other revenue streams, such as e-commerce. Wondery will still exist, housed under Creator Services, although its CEO, Ms Jen Sargent, is departing the company, according to a staff memo sent on Aug 4 by Mr Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games at Amazon. Ms Sargent, who has been CEO since 2021, will not be replaced, according to a spokesperson. In total, more than 100 jobs were eliminated, although some Wondery employees were reassigned. Podcasting emerged in the 2000s, propelled by radio veterans devoted to audio and narrative storytelling. But today, many of the most popular and lucrative podcasts are video shows, hosted by chatty personalities with large social media followings. Amazon is betting that these two categories require different business models. 'They didn't make sense to have under a single roof anymore,' Mr Boom said in a phone interview on Aug 4. For narrative shows, 'the person telling the story isn't the product,' Mr Boom said. 'The story is the product.' But video podcasts, with their 'borderline explosive growth,' he continued, are the opposite: It's all about the talent, their fan bases and their franchise potential. 'It's about building an audience and then finding lots of different ways to monetise that audience,' Mr Boom said. In 2024, for example, the Wondery children's science podcast 'Wow in the World' began selling educational toys. Mr Boom emphasised Wondery was not being shuttered. 'It's not that Wondery is gone, it's that we're really focusing Wondery in one direction,' he said. That direction underscores Amazon's interest in building a stable of stars to feed its many platforms. Their video podcasts will be streamed on Prime Video; their wares will be sold on Amazon's website; they will appear at company marketing events and in ad campaigns. Wondery, which was founded in 2016 and purchased by Amazon in 2021, has already been pursuing this strategy. In March 2025, it acquired a basketball podcast from LeBron James to complement Amazon's nascent billion-dollar streaming agreement with the National Basketball Association. Three months later, James starred in the company's Prime Day commercials. THE NEW YORK TIMES

Amazon to cut Wondery staff, reorganise audio business

[NEW YORK] is breaking up the operations of its Wondery podcast network as part of a broad reorganisation of the business. About 110 people will lose their jobs because of the move, according to a source familiar with the plans. In addition, Wondery chief executive officer Jen Sargent will exit the company, according to a memo to staff viewed by Bloomberg News. Existing Wondery series will either be moved under Amazon's Audible banner or become part of the company's new 'creator services' team, which will become home to personality-driven shows, including Jason and Travis Kelce's podcast. The Wondery brand will still exist on some of these creator services-run shows. The moves are an acknowledgement that Amazon's big push into podcasts has not worked out as planned. Despite signing up some of the biggest names in the business, the online retailer is shifting strategies to compete better with platforms such as Spotify Technology and Alphabet's YouTube as podcasts shift to video formats from audio-only. 'The podcast landscape has evolved significantly over the past few years,' Steve Boom, vice-president of audio, Twitch and games, wrote in the memo. 'The rise of video has also blurred the lines on what it means to be a podcast creator.' The Wondery+ team will now report into Audible, the memo states. Wondery's narrative-driven studio, which creates shows including the Dr Death series, will merge with Audible, and Wondery chief content officer Marshall Lewy will join Audible in a new role. BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up Meanwhile, Wondery's tentpole shows with major talent, such as Dax Shepard, will start working with the creator services team, a move designed in part to do a better job of selling large sponsorships and integrations across the Amazon platform. The company has created a blueprint of sorts with LeBron James, who hosts a podcast, Mind the Game, and has worked as a Prime Day spokesperson, a role in which he promoted his line of male-grooming products. Wondery's advertising and sponsorships organisation will form a new team that handles similar deals across Amazon Music and the creator-led programmes. The Wondery+ app will continue to exist for the foreseeable future, said the source who asked not to be identified, discussing non public information. 'These changes will not only better align our teams as they work to take advantage of the strategic opportunities ahead but, even more crucially, will ensure we have the right structure in place to deliver the very best experience to creators, customers and advertisers,' Boom wrote. In 2020, at the height of the podcast boom, Amazon purchased Wondery for roughly US$300 million, according to media reports at the time. Amazon allowed Wondery to operate independently, running its own subscription app. Lately, the podcast industry has been struggling to adapt to a video-first approach, driven by YouTube's dominance of the medium, which rewards streamlined, personality-driven operations. In June, radio conglomerate Audacy shut down Pineapple Street Studios, its audio-centric podcast business. Several of Wondery's biggest shows have moved elsewhere. Sirius XM Holdings announced recently that it's licensing Morbid, a popular true-crime programme that had been a Wondery partner. Another former Wondery show, SmartLess, also now works with SiriusXM. All told, the number of people consuming podcasts continues to grow. This year, an estimated 158 million Americans ages 12 and up listened to a podcast monthly, according to Edison Research, with 48 per cent of US audiences having listened to and watched a podcast. Amazon overhauls Wondery podcast studio, cuts 110 jobs

is restructuring the Wondery podcast studio by shifting its award-winning narrative podcasts such as "Business Wars" to Audible and consolidating creator-led shows into a new unit, according to a memo seen by Reuters. About 110 employees will be laid off as part of the process, while many Wondery employees will transition to other parts of Amazon, the company said in an emailed statement on Monday. Wondery CEO Jen Sargent will depart the company following a transition period, the memo said. Intense competition in the expensive podcast industry as well as a growing focus on creator-led video content have prompted audio streaming companies including Spotify to diversify their podcasts as they look to lower costs and attract more users to their platforms. "As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series," Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games at Amazon, wrote in the memo. Wondery was acquired by Amazon in 2021 and has seen podcast revenue quadruple since then as the studio expanded its slate to include video podcasts and creator-driven series, according to the memo. Under the new structure, Wondery's narrative podcast studio - home to shows such as "Dr. Death" and "American Scandal" - along with the Wondery+ subscription service, will move to Audible, the e-commerce giant's audio platform. Its creator-focused podcast team that produces shows including "Mind the Game", "New Heights", and "Armchair Expert" will join a new Creator Services group within Amazon's Talent Services division. This new team will continue to operate the creator-focused podcast studio under the Wondery brand. "By making these changes, we can better support creators in monetizing their content across multiple channels," Amazon said.
