China's Chery, BYD may have to repay subsidies after audit finds irregularities
The audit documents did not lay out any penalties or mention reimbursement, but the government has previously said automakers will have to repay subsidies for vehicles found not to have met mileage requirements.
The audit found 21,725 vehicles should not have received subsidies that totalled 864.9 million yuan ($121 million), documents published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology last month showed.
Chery had 7,663 vehicles disqualified while BYD had 4,973.
The ministry, Chery and BYD did not reply to requests for comment.
Repaying subsidies has the potential to exacerbate pain for China's automakers as the industry grapples with excess capacity and the fallout from a prolonged and fierce price war that has hit profitability and set dealers and suppliers at odds with manufacturers.
China's top leaders have pledged to increase regulation of pricing and support the orderly phasing out of outdated production capacity, state media reported this month.
China provided generous subsidies for new energy vehicles between 2009 and 2022 to promote the adoption of electric, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles.
That worked and sales of such vehicles began surpassing gasoline-powered car sales on a monthly basis since March.
The ministry report collated audits by local governments, which are now doing more audits for 2021 and 2022.

The newest model was presented at Goodwood Festival of Speed over the weekend. Tiggo 8 is the first 7-seater from Chery to be sold in Britain. MODEL SPECIFICATIONS The hybrid vehicle combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 201bhp and 269lb ft of torque. According to Chery, it can travel up to 765 miles on combined power sources, with an 18.4kWh battery providing an additional 56 miles of EV range. The sophisticated interior is enhanced by chrome grills and a rear that has a slight resemblance of the Kia Sportage. The interior sports a dual screen, and standard specifications include a panoramic sunroof, a 12-speaker Sony sound system, and adaptive cruise control. The model is an electric crossover designed to rival the Skoda Elroq, Kia EV3, and Renault Megane. Geely said the EX5 has been assessed by Lotus Engineering to evaluate whether it requires retuning for European roads. Meanwhile, Solihull's International Motors has started importing Xpeng's new G6 car which could undercut the Tesla Model Y. Chinese firm Xpeng's new motor has been designed by the world-renowned JuanMa Lopez who was responsible for leading on the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. Decision on Stockton market's future set to be put on hold
A decision on the fate of a market hall could be delayed after pressure from concerned business owners and at Stockton Shambles said having to move could mean "the end of the road" after they were notified that Stockton Council's cabinet was due to vote on proposals to market the hall as a "food and beverage opportunity".Matt Vickers, Conservative MP for Stockton West, raised the issue in the Commons on Tuesday claiming it was an "absolute disgrace".Councillor Richard Eglington, cabinet member for regeneration, said he would recommend the decision on Thursday be delayed until "thorough engagement" had taken place. Vickers said the council's proposal was "a shameful betrayal" of hard-working businesses who had kept the high street alive, according to the Local Democracy Reporting service."To be told out of the blue that they are being thrown out of their premises, with barely a day's notice of the meeting, is an absolute disgrace," he said. 'Unclear future' Chris McDonald, Labour MP for Stockton North, has also written to council leader Lisa Evans, requesting a "pause and review". He said the issue had "rightly" become emotive, with a "significant" toll on business owners."These are businesses who've served our town loyally through tough years," he said."Many of them feel anxious about what comes next and, in several cases, unclear on whether they have any real future in the town centre at all."The proposal was set to be considered with a raft of other plans for the town and the council said it remained committed to the regeneration of the authority added that it would provide "tailored support" to the six affected traders to explore relocation options and help develop their business said: "We appreciate the uncertainty that the businesses will be feeling at the moment but we want to reassure them that there is plenty of time for us to work constructively together and help them develop plans for the future."
