Pastor honors Eddie Shed, killed while saving others at South MS church event
Eddie Shed, a security guard and deacon at Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, a Gulfport church, died in a shooting Saturday when he tried to intervene in a domestic violence dispute that turned physical at a church event, authorities confirmed Saturday. Police have taken three people into custody and additional details have not been released.
The church made the following statement:
It is with heavy hearts that we, the Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, address the tragic events that unfolded during our Family Easter Egg Hunt at Prudie Circle earlier today.
Our beloved Deacon Eddie Shed was taken from us in a senseless act of gun violence. Deacon Shed epitomized the virtues of a hero, displaying selfless courage and bravery that ultimately saved others from harm. He paid the ultimate price for his valor, and we are deeply saddened by this loss.
Deacon Shed was a pillar of strength within our community and a beacon of light and hope. His unwavering faith, kindness, and dedication to serving others have left an indelible mark on all who knew him. We extend our heartfelt prayers and condolences to Doris, Jaylen, Kaleb, KaMya, Neloise, Derrick and his family and friends who grieve this profound loss.
We want to reassure everyone that this tragic act was not carried out by a member of Empowerment Ministries Christian Center. What began as a beautiful day filled with laughter and joy was overshadowed by a criminal act and we are all heartbroken by this senseless violence.
In this time of sorrow, we remain steadfast in our mission to be a light in the midst of darkness. Our faith gives us hope and strength, and we draw comfort from the assurance that we will one day be reunited with Deacon Shed. We continue to lift in prayer those affected by this tragedy and stand together as a community, united in love and resilience.
Let us hold each other close, support one another, and continue to be beacons of hope and love in our world.

Empowerment Ministries Christian Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, identified the deacon as Eddie Shed and said he died on April 12 while trying to "save others from harm" at the church's Easter egg hunt at Jack and Florence Goldin Park in Gulfport. The Gulfport Police Department said the shooting stemmed from a "child custody dispute" and that two people who tried to "deescalate the fight" were hit by gunfire, as well as the suspect. Shed was pronounced dead at the scene and another person was airlifted to an out-of-state hospital. The following day, police arrested Tyran Deion Gable, 24, of Saucier, Mississippi, on charges of murder and aggravated assault, according to the Gulfport Police Department. Gable was hit by gunfire during the shooting and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said. In a statement posted to social media, the church said Shed was killed "in a senseless act of gun violence." 'I wouldn't expect nothing less from him to do something like that, nothing less. He was just a hero,' longtime church member Shatondria Ball told WLOX. 'He died a hero doing what he does best, and that's protecting and that's loving and that's looking out for everyone,' fellow church member Alexis Weathersby told the outlet. 'He was just a wonderful man that was willing to do any and everything for anyone.' Gregg S. Magee, senior pastor of Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, described Shed in a statement as "a pillar of strength within our community and a beacon of light and hope." "His unwavering faith, kindness, and dedication to serving others have left an indelible mark on all who knew him," the pastor said. Shed is survived by his wife and three children. A GoFundMe for his family has raised nearly $16,000 as of April 15.

Man arrested for deadly shooting at Easter egg hunt in Gulfport
GULFPORT, Miss. (WJTV) – Gulfport police announced a man was arrested in connection to a fatal shooting during a church Easter egg hunt. WXXV reported the incident occurred at the sports complex off of Prudie Circle on Saturday, April 12. According to investigators, the shooting stemmed from a child custody dispute. Body of missing 6-year-old girl found in Mississippi Police said Tyran Gable, 24, shot two people who were trying to deescalate the situation. One victim, who was identified as church Deacon Eddie Shed, died at the scene. The second victim was airlifted to an out-of-state hospital for treatment. According to officers, Gable was also injured during the shooting and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault.
