Japan tech giant SoftBank Group sees better fortunes on surging AI stocks

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese technology conglomerate SoftBank Group Corp. posted a 421.8 billion yen ($2.9 billion) profit in the April-June quarter, rebounding from a loss a year earlier as its investments benefited from the craze for artificial intelligence. Quarterly sales at Tokyo-based SoftBank Group, which invests heavily in AI companies like Nvidia and Open AI, rose 7% to 1.8 trillion yen ($12 billion), the company said Thursday. SoftBank's loss in April-June 2024 was 174 billion yen. The company's fortunes tend to fluctuate because it invests in a range of ventures through its Vision Funds, a move that carries risks. The group's founder Masayoshi Son has emphasized that he sees a vibrant future in AI. SoftBank has also invested in Arm Holdings and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Both companies, which produce computer chips, have benefitted from the growth of AI. 'The era is definitely AI, and we are focused on AI,' SoftBank senior executive Yoshimitsu Goto he told reporters. 'An investment company goes through its ups and downs, but we are recently seeing steady growth.' Some of SoftBank's other investments also have paid off big. An example is Coupang, an e-commerce company known as the 'Amazon of South Korea,' because it started out in Seoul. Coupang now operates in the U.S. and other Asian nations. Goto said preparations for an IPO for PayPay, a kind of cashless payment system, were going well. The company has already held IPOs for Chime, a U.S. 'neobank' that provides banking services for low-credit consumers, and for Etoro, a personal investment platform. ___ Yuri Kageyama on Threads:

Sony's In-Demand Games and Music Help Allay Trump Tariff Fears

(Bloomberg) -- Sony Group Corp.'s shares had their best day in two weeks after the Japanese company lifted its profit forecast on growth in its entertainment divisions, easing investor fears about possible US tariffs on chips. All Hail the Humble Speed Hump Mayor Asked to Explain $1.4 Billion of Wasted Johannesburg Funds Three Deaths Reported as NYC Legionnaires' Outbreak Spreads Major Istanbul Projects Are Stalling as City Leaders Sit in Jail PATH Train Service Resumes After Fire at Jersey City Station Momentum in the music and games segments bolstered the Tokyo-based company's outlook, Sony said on Thursday. The number of monthly active users on its PlayStation platform rose 6% from a year ago, alongside an increase in total hours played. That's while the Sony Music segment logged a 5% revenue increase despite a hefty forex impact. The Japanese entertainment group raised its operating income forecast for the year ending March to ¥1.33 trillion ($9 billion), up 4% and roughly in line with analyst estimates. Back in May, in the midst of uncertainty around Washington's new import tax regime, Sony had warned its profit would take a ¥100 billion hit. Following Japan's trade deal with the US, Sony said it now sees a tariff impact of around ¥70 billion. Shares in the company erased earlier losses to rise 4.1% in Tokyo on Thursday. 'From the second quarter onward, we expect uncertainties such as US tariffs to become more pronounced, and we intend to proactively address these risks,' Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao said on a call after the release of the company's fiscal first-quarter report. Sony is closely monitoring the situation and preparing with various scenarios in mind, she added. The Japanese company produces image sensors used in Apple Inc.'s iPhone cameras and across the wider smartphone industry, which would be caught up in any additional levies on semiconductors. US President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 100% tariff on chip imports and another possible levy on products containing them weighs on Sony and other hardware makers. The declared tariffs, if implemented, may force a rejig of supply chains with far-reaching implications for exporters. Confidence in Sony has been strengthened by resilient growth in the groups less likely to be caught up in export taxes. It plans to rein in costs and focus on profitability with the PlayStation group, which will release Ghost of Yōtei, a sequel to Sony's hit game Ghost of Tsushima, in October. 'The PlayStation business is performing quite well, and the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers is growing faster than expected, said Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda. 'Additionally, the anime and smartphone game business has seen major hits and large-scale events, further fueling expectations for strong growth in this unit.' Income from Sony's hit anime operations is expected to increase in the months to come, with the new, record-setting Demon Slayer movie earning ¥17.6 billion and drawing 12.6 million viewers in Japan as of Aug. 3, Sony said. Subsidiary Aniplex Inc. also operates Fate/Grand Order, a hit smartphone game that is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The music unit has grown to be a reliable pillar of growth for Sony, bringing in a steady flow of revenue as opposed to the company's more prominent but fluctuating consumer electronics and image sensors. Royalty income from music streaming operators remains strong, and popular anime works produced under the Sony umbrella are helping catapult in-house artists into the mainstream. 'Our anime titles have received extremely high acclaim,' Tao said. 'As for Demon Slayer, given its status as a highly popular IP, we have already factored its success into our earnings outlook.' --With assistance from Mark Anderson. Japan cuts growth forecast on US tariffs drag, weaker consumption

By Makiko Yamazaki TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan's government cut its growth forecast for this fiscal year on Thursday as U.S. tariffs slow capital expenditure and persistent inflation weighs on private consumption, threatening a fragile economic recovery. In revised estimates presented at a meeting of Japan's top economic council, the government cut its inflation-adjusted gross domestic product growth forecast for the year ending in March 2026 to 0.7% from 1.2% projected in January. The new forecast, still above private-sector forecasts for 0.5% growth, reflects worries that U.S. tariffs will make Japanese companies more cautious about capital expenditures and drag down exports, both key drivers of Japan's economic growth. The outlook for private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan's economy, was also lowered as inflation continues to squeeze households. The private-sector members of the economic council warned that inflation could further dampen consumer spending if it accelerates. "The Bank of Japan should pursue its price stability mission and sustainably and stably meet it's 2% inflation target," the members said. For the next fiscal year from April, the government projected growth to pick up slightly to 0.9%, retaining its view the economy will sustain a domestic demand-led recovery as it predicts wage growth will outpace inflation and boost private consumption. The government maintained its outlook for delivering a primary budget surplus in fiscal 2026 for the first time in decades, predicting even a larger surplus of 3.6 trillion yen ($24.39 billion) thanks to higher tax revenues. The primary budget balance, which excludes new bond sales and debt-servicing costs, is a key gauge of the extent to which policy measures can be funded without resorting to debt. But the rosy outlook has not factored in potential tax cuts and cash handouts that the government has been considering amid growing pressure from the opposition for more aggressive spending to ease rising living costs. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's grip on power has been further weakened by a bruising defeat for his ruling coalition this month in upper house elections after having lost its lower house majority last October.
