Nagpur: With a voice filled with pride along with a hint of fatigue, Suresh Guhe, who retired as a sanitation worker, said, "We cleaned what others didn't even want to look at — plastic-strewn roads, clogged drains, overflowing bins.
And even now, the city hasn't learned to keep itself clean."
On Saturday, Guhe and 39 other retired sanitation workers were honoured for the first time by the Solid Waste Management Department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in a heartfelt ceremony that acknowledged decades of unglamorous, back-breaking work that often went unnoticed.
Held at the Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Standing Committee Hall, the event marked a historic shift in the way the civic body treats its sanitation staff.
Each worker was presented with a tulsi sapling, a shawl, a coconut, and a certificate — small tokens that carried the weight of long-overdue gratitude.
Among those honoured was Kavita Samundre, who retired after 32 years of service. She recalled the daily grind with a quiet strength. "People think cleaning is a lowly job, but we did it with dignity," she said.
"Rain or shine, even during the Covid lockdown, we were on the streets before the city even woke up.

Recognition like this for the first time fills us with a sense of pride," she added.
For decades, these workers swept streets, cleaned open drains, and managed public waste under difficult and often hazardous conditions. Many did so without adequate protective gear, and almost always without public appreciation. "There were days when we did the cleaning during heavy rains or festivals, without any leave or acknowledgement," said Chhayatai Mahajan, who discharged her duties in Dharampeth zone.
"Getting recognised at the headquarters today feels like our efforts to keep the city clean were appreciated," she added.
Deputy municipal commissioner Rajesh Bhagat, who presided over the ceremony, praised the retirees for their dedication, saying, "Cleanliness is not just a department's job — it's a city's character. But the character of our sanitation workers has been exceptional."
Chief sanitation officer Dr Gajendra Mahalle also acknowledged their indispensable role in keeping Nagpur's public health infrastructure intact.
"Nagpur has a new identity today because of their service. It's only right we honour them," he said.
Though the event was celebratory, many retirees expressed concern over the persistent lack of civic sense plaguing the city — widespread littering, garbage dumping in open spaces, and an utter disregard for sanitation rules.
"We've retired, but the mission for a clean city isn't over," one honouree said. For once, these men and women found themselves in the spotlight — not as invisible workers now confined to the margins of the society, but as the custodians of public hygiene who upheld the city's health, one broomstroke at a time.
The honour, though symbolic, marked a step towards restoring the dignity of a workforce too long ignored.

Charges framed against AAP MP Sanjay Singh in model code violation case; next hearing on Jul 5
Singh's advocate, Madan Pratap Singh, said that the AAP leader appeared in court on Tuesday as it turned down his application for discharge and accepted the charge-framing petition, proceeding to formally frame charges against him. The court also rejected Singh's discharge plea and scheduled the next hearing for July 5. Sultanpur (UP), Jun 3 (PTI) A special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur on Tuesday framed charges against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh in a case related to violation of the model code of conduct and COVID-19 guidelines four years ago. The matter was then posted for next month due to the absence of two other accused in the case. The case dates back to April 13, 2021, when, during the panchayat elections, Singh was accused of holding a public meeting without permission in Hasanpur village under Bandhua Kala Police Station limits. The politician was then allegedly campaigning for AAP district panchayat candidate Salma Begum. Police then filed an FIR against Singh and 13 named and 45 unnamed people for allegedly violating the model code and COVID-19 protocols, the lawyer said. While the other named in the case secured bail earlier, a bailable warrant was issued against Singh for failing to appear in court. He surrendered in July 2024 and was granted bail on furnishing two sureties of Rs 20,000 each along with a personal bond, the lawyer said. Following the investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet in the court naming Maksood Ansari, Saleem Ansari, Jagdish Yadav, Maksood, Sukai, Dharmraj, Zeeshan, Sahban, Sikandar, Jaleel, and Ajay – all of them natives of Hasanpur — as co-accused in the matter, he added. KTR assures support for Indian students in US
Hyderabad: Assuring Indian students studying in the United States that the BRS would stand by those facing difficulties for various reasons, BRS working president KT Rama Rao stated that many students travel to the US for higher education with great hopes. If they unknowingly make mistakes due to a lack of awareness, the BRS' US wing would work to provide the necessary legal assistance. He acknowledged the emotional toll experienced when students are forced to return under such circumstances, affecting not just the individuals themselves but also their families. Therefore, a decision was made to support them, he said. KTR also advised that students must understand US laws, societal changes, and adapt accordingly. Every student should be well-informed about local laws and social dynamics. He also interacted with students at the University of Texas at Dallas on Monday and responded to several questions posed by them. He emphasised that pursuing education in the US involves significant effort and financial investment, but noted that the world is changing rapidly and new opportunities are emerging. He also pointed out that US education has become more accessible to many. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Volks-Treppenlift in Baden-württemberg: So kosten Treppenlifte fast nichts Treppenlift-Vergleich Mehr erfahren Undo KTR urged students to focus not only on ranks and grades, but also on broader life goals. He remarked that life passes quickly and that one should strive to realise their dreams and aspirations within this short span. Even in the face of obstacles or detractors, he encouraged students to move forward with dedication. He stressed that students should not aim solely for employment, but aspire to bring about positive change in society and the world. KTR highlighted the pace of global innovation and underscored the importance of India competing in this space. He encouraged Indian students in the US to concentrate on innovation. He cited the life of K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) as proof that dreams can come true when one is willing to take risks. He recalled how KCR, at an age considered young in politics (early 40s), gave up official positions to fight for the creation of Telangana. Though many ridiculed him at the time, after 14 years of determined struggle, he succeeded in achieving statehood, earning respect from across society. The former minister answered several questions from students and encouraged them to return to India after completing their studies to start their own ventures. Despite numerous challenges, he reminded them that India is full of opportunities. He expressed concern over the ongoing brain drain and urged Indian youth abroad to contribute to the development of India and Telangana.
