KOTA KINABALU: The strategic relationship between Sabah and China is set to grow stronger with ongoing diplomatic and development partnerships, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He stated that various development initiatives are being planned, with Sabah committed to creating a conducive, investor-friendly environment to attract more Chinese companies to the state.
He made these remarks after receiving a courtesy call from the newly appointed Consul General of China in Kota Kinabalu, Dr Zhu Xinglong, on Wednesday (June 18).
'We are confident that the existing relationship will only be strengthened,' said Hajiji.
During the courtesy call, he congratulated Dr Zhu on his appointment, expressing confidence that it will boost new two-way relations between Sabah and China, especially in investment, trade, tourism, education, and other sectors.
This is Dr Zhu's first visit to Hajiji after replacing the former Consul General of China in Kota Kinabalu, Dr Huang Shifang.
Dr Huang, who held the post from 30 May 2022 until the end of March this year, is now the new Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Mauritius. She arrived in Mauritius on 2 May.

Miti probes alleged breach involving Nvidia-powered AI chips

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/File Photo KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) is verifying with relevant agencies to see whether any local laws have been breached following reports of a Chinese company using Nvidia-powered artificial intelligence (AI) chips for Large Language Model (LLM) training in Malaysia. In a statement today, MITI said that servers using Nvidia chips and AI chips are not classified as controlled goods under the Malaysian Strategic Trade Act 2010 (STA 2010). "However, Malaysia will cooperate with any government that requires assistance in monitoring trade in sensitive goods under the export control of their respective countries,' it said. Guided by the principles of transparency, good governance and the rule of law, businesses, including data centres operating in Malaysia, are free to make their own commercial decisions, provided that they operate within the scope of Malaysian laws and regulations, said MITI. "The development and regulation of the Malaysian data centre industry and ecosystem is also actively and jointly managed by MITI and the Ministry of Digital through the Data Centre Task Force,' it said. The ministry said that Malaysia stands firm against any individual or company that attempts to circumvent export controls or engage in illicit trade activities. "MITI remains committed to facilitating legitimate trade and fostering a secure and responsible investment and trade environment, ensuring that all technology-related investments and trade align with international best practices as well as with multilaterally agreed commitments,' it said. It also emphasised that Malaysia remains committed to upholding international trade regulations and ensuring full compliance with global export control measures. "MITI will always act firmly against any company operating in Malaysia that violates Malaysian and international trading regulations, including those involved in the semiconductor and AI industries,' it said. MITI added that while Malaysia maintains a neutral position on unilateral sanctions, companies operating here have been advised to adhere to other countries' unilateral export controls which apply to their international business activities to avoid any secondary sanctions on their businesses. - Bernama

Ascend Commences Orderly Wind Down of HMD Production Facility in Lianyungang

All other facilities continue to operate as usual; shipments and product delivery to continue in normal course Remains on track to emerge from Chapter 11 this fall HOUSTON, June 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Ascend Performance Materials, a leading producer of high-performance and durable engineered materials for everyday essentials and new technologies, announced today its decision to initiate a wind down of operations at its hexamethylene diamine production facility in Lianyungang, China. This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of the facility's long-term viability amid evolving market dynamics and regulatory landscapes. 'Ascend has made significant strides improving the business as we continue to focus on driving operational effectiveness,' said Phil McDivitt, President and CEO of Ascend Performance Materials. 'In April, with the support of our lenders, we initiated a financial restructuring process to reduce our debt and position Ascend for the future. As we evaluated the market conditions and ongoing trade disputes, we determined that the LYG production facility is no longer the best way to support our customers in the region. Accordingly, we have made the decision to wind down the facility.' He continued, 'Decisions that impact our people are never easy. The people in our LYG plant showed excellence and dedication in everything they did, and we thank them for their contributions to Ascend, and this decision is not a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the team in LYG. We are committed to supporting our impacted team members, and we are committed to making this a smooth transition process for our customers and partners.' Ascend remains steadfast in its commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance throughout the wind down process. The Company will work closely with local authorities to ensure that decommissioning activities meet all applicable environmental and safety standards. The Company expects to complete the wind down process over the next several months. Master Tec signs MoU with China's YOFC Marine to promote submarine and high-voltage cables in Malaysia

MASTER Tec Group Bhd (MTG) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China-based Yangtze (Jiangsu) Marine Technology Co Ltd (YOFC Marine) to explore collaboration in the marketing, sale, and technical development of advanced cable technologies in Malaysia. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, MTG said the MOU, signed on the same date, grants the company the rights to promote and sell YOFC Marine's products within Malaysia. Support for the regional market may also be extended by YOFC Marine on a mutually agreed basis. YOFC Marine is a specialist in marine engineering and the production of submarine composite power cables and a full range of fibre optic cables. Under the MoU, the parties intend to work together on product development and technical collaboration involving submarine composite power cables, optical ground wire cables, specialised low-sag high-capacity overhead conductors, and high voltage underground cables rated at 132kV and above. YOFC Marine will provide design specifications, technical expertise, machinery recommendations, and testing protocols to support MTG's efforts. The Chinese company may also second its technical expatriates to MTG, with all related costs, including accommodation and allowances, to be borne by MTG, subject to further agreement. The MoU has an initial term of three years and may be extended upon mutual agreement. MTG noted that the MoU is expected to contribute positively to future earnings. The board and management of MTG said they are of the view that the MoU is in the best interest of the company. — TMR
