Pilots ‘waved to children' before aircraft ‘crashed head first' into ground at Southend Airport
Essex Police said they were alerted shortly before 4pm on Sunday to 'reports of a collision involving one 12-metre plane' at Southend Airport and that they remain on the scene of the 'serious incident'.
Images posted on social media show a plume of fire and black smoke coming up from the crash site.
John Johnson, who was at the airport with his children and wife, said he saw a 'big fireball' after the plane crashed 'head first into the ground'.
Mr Johnson, from Billericay, said: 'We all waved at the pilots, and they all waved back at us.
'The aircraft then turned 180 degrees to face its take-off, departure, powered up, rolled down the runway.
'It took off and about three or four seconds after taking off, it started to bank heavily to its left, and then within a few seconds of that happening, it more or less inverted and crashed just head first into the ground.'There was a big fireball. Obviously, everybody was in shock in terms of witnessing it.
As a precaution because of their proximity to the incident, police said they evacuated the Rochford Hundred Golf Club.
A bartender at the golf club, which is next door to the airport, said he felt a 'big heat wave' before looking up to a 'massive fireball' in the sky.
James Philpott told the BBC: 'I was just basically in a hut like in the middle of the course and I didn't even see any plane go down or anything and I just felt like a big heat wave come through and I looked up and there was just a massive fireball basically 100 foot in the sky.
'It was more the heat really just kind of hit me as I was sitting there, just like, feel like I'm baking.'
He continued: 'I think everyone was just quite shocked to be honest. People were sort of running towards it to see if anyone was injured or anything.'
Mr Philpott said he and others were collected from the course and taken back to the clubhouse where they remain now at a 'safe distance' with the club closed.
Transport secretary Heidi Alexander said her 'thoughts are with all those involved' in the crash and she is 'receiving regular updates'.
In a post on X, she said: 'The emergency services are on scene and are advising the public to avoid the area where possible.'
In a statement, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: 'We were called to an incident involving a light aircraft at Southend Airport today at 3.58pm.
'Crews from Southend (two), Rayleigh Weir and Basildon (two), along with off road vehicles from Billericay and Chelmsford attended.
'We are continuing to work at the scene with our emergency services and aviation partners.'
The East of England Ambulance Service said four ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, four hazardous area response team vehicles, three senior paramedic cars and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance have been sent to the incident.
According to the airport's website, four flights scheduled to take off on Sunday afternoon have been cancelled.
Southend Airport said in a statement: 'We can confirm there has been a serious incident at London Southend Airport this afternoon involving a general aviation aircraft.
'We are working closely with the local authorities and will be able to provide more information as soon as possible.'
Essex Police said they remain on the scene alongside fire and ambulance services.

"No one has forgotten his infamous 'Newsnight' interview or the photograph with Epstein… He continues to be seen as an entitled imbecile." "He can only be seen with the royal family inside a church without attracting fiercely negative comment," Fitzwilliams said. "[But] unless he accepts that he has been found guilty in the court of public opinion and… [shows] some repentance or, at the very least, something positive which helps others, at his best, his future is well behind him." Fox News Digital obtained a two-page internal Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI memo that says that Epstein, a late American financier and convicted pedophile, died by suicide, and there is no list of clients who were involved in exploitation. "This systemic review revealed no incriminating 'client list,'" a portion of the memo read. "There was also no credible evidence found that Epstein blackmailed prominent individuals as part of his actions. We did not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties." The memo also stated that Epstein died by suicide in 2019 in the Metropolitan Correctional Facility in New York City. A source claimed to The Sun that the son of Queen Elizabeth II has been abroad only "once" since his controversial connection to Epstein came to light. "He has always been very nervous about going abroad and felt he'd always be looking over his shoulder as he could be subject to civil action or, at worst, being arrested," the source claimed to the outlet. "Hopefully with this out of the way it means he can at least leave the country," the insider continued. "What's he supposed to do with the rest of his life? He hasn't been convicted of any crime and can't sit around doing nothing at Royal Lodge forever." A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace previously told Fox News Digital they don't speak for the duke, as he's no longer a working royal. However, British royals expert Hilary Fordwich pointed out to Fox News Digital that it's likely Andrew will continue to keep his head down to avoid further humiliation and scrutiny. "While Andrew might be feeling a sense of relief and cautious optimism, being now technically able to travel, both his personal and public prospects remain constrained by the enduring negative fallout, as well as his frightfully tarnished reputation from the Epstein scandal," she explained. "The media will [still] be relentless and most certainly not positive. They will also be more likely to be hostile, as well as embarrassing to the royal family, if he does travel to the U.S. He is not likely to ever regain public favor either nor return to any prominence." Fitzwilliams also questioned "what is the point of him?" referring to any contributions Andrew can make as a royal. "He isn't doing anything useful, although a job could be found helping to run the royal estates," he said. "He may well cling on to the thirty-room Royal Lodge if he can afford the upkeep… He has a 75-year lease [that] he took out in 2003." "It's noted that he did not offer to help with the FBI investigation, although he had originally offered to do so," said Fitzwilliams. King Charles' younger brother stepped back as a senior royal in 2019 following his nuclear televised interview with BBC's "Newsnight" about his ties to Epstein. At the time, the royal said he regretted his relationship with the 66-year-old. In January 2022, the queen, who died in September of that year, stripped her second son of his military titles and patronages. At the time, the father of two attempted to have a sexual abuse lawsuit made by Virginia Giuffre dismissed. Andrew settled with Giuffre for an undisclosed sum, agreeing to make a "substantial donation" to her survivors' organization. A statement filed in court said that the prince acknowledged Epstein was a sex trafficker and Giuffre "an established victim of abuse." Giuffre said Epstein trafficked her and that she had sex with Andrew three times: in London during her 2001 trip, at Epstein's New York mansion when she was 17, and in the Virgin Islands when she was 18. She took her life in April of this year at her farm in Western Australia, her publicist confirmed. She was 41. It is believed that Andrew first met Epstein in 1999. Andrew claimed he cut ties with Epstein shortly after the pair were photographed taking a stroll through Central Park. Epstein killed himself while awaiting trial on U.S. federal sex trafficking charges involving dozens of teenage girls and young women, some as young as 14. The charges came 14 years after police in Palm Beach, Florida, first began investigating allegations that he sexually abused underage girls who were hired to give him massages. Epstein's partner in crime, Ghislaine Maxwell, was convicted in 2021 on federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges. The British socialite, 63, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Kinsey Schofield, host of the To Di for Daily podcast, previously told Fox News Digital that Andrew's reputation is forever tarnished. At this point, she argued, he should never be seen or heard from again as there's nothing he can do to redeem himself publicly. "Andrew needs to avoid being seen or heard for the rest of King Charles' reign," said Schofield. "If you want to attend church with your family, fine — stay 100 feet behind them when photographers are around. Otherwise, he should continue… horse riding privately on the property that King Charles asked him to surrender. Whether he's innocent of the initial accusations is irrelevant. He's guilty by association with Jeffrey Epstein."

Police using metal detectors in Stoke-on-Trent schools in knife crime crackdown
Police are taking a knife arch into Stoke-on-Trent schools - to try to raise awareness of the dangers of carrying blades. Birches Head Academy is the latest secondary school to take part in the Staffordshire Police operation. It saw pupils walk through the knife arch at the start of the school day. No blades were seized. It comes as one parent has complained to StokeonTrentLive about the use of the knife arch. He labelled the operation a 'joke'. This is a growing issue in communities across the country, and it is right that we do all that we can to educate and raise awareness about the dangers of carrying a bladed item. "During the campaign, we had some brilliant external speakers come to present to our students, alongside some insightful class discussions and lessons. We also wrote to parents several times over about how we would be one of many schools who would allow police to use a metal detection system one morning when students arrived at school known as a knife arch. However, for obvious reasons, we didn't name the exact date or time when this would be taking place. "While we appreciate that the knife arch can be unnerving, it was heartening that pupils went through it. There was one individual who initially refused, but shortly afterwards opted to go through the arch. No items were uncovered and no child was searched." Staffordshire Police say the crackdown was 'part of pre-planned engagement activity'. A police spokesman said: "We installed a knife arch as part of the engagement, to educate pupils as to the dangers of knives and what support is available to them if they feel they need it. No knives were recovered. We continue to engage with our communities to ensure people feel safe and secure across Staffordshire." Mum of Sutton Park drowning victim says new teen death ‘brought back such painful memories'
The mother of a teen drowning victim said a new tragedy in the same lake brought back "painful memories". Frazer Amiss died after getting into difficulties in Powell's Pool in Sutton Park on July 29, 2001. The 15-year-old was said to have been trying to swim to a sea cadet boat moored in the pool when he drowned. READ MORE: Kids risk their lives in Sutton Park lake days after teen tragedy The alarm had been raised at 7pm that Sunday evening but, with no water rescue team nearby, one had to come from Nottingham and Frazer's body was not recovered until the following morning. The incident is tragically similar to the death of Daniel Drewitt, 16, who was lost in the same pool at around 6pm last Thursday. The alarm was raised and emergency crews were called. His body was found shortly after 10pm. Daniel's heartbroken family paid tribute to a 'handsome, funny and talented boy with a beautiful spirit'. His grandmother said he was her 'beautiful grandson who had his whole life ahead of him'. His school, Colmers School & Sixth Form College in Rednal, also paid tribute to the teenager saying: 'Daniel was a young man who brought light and character to our entire school community.' Now Frazer's mum, Julie, has spoken of the moment she heard the news of another death in Powell's Pool some 24 years after her son's. Julie said: 'I was stunned and deeply saddened to hear the heartbreaking news of another teenager losing his life at Powell's Pool. 'It's devastating news, and it has brought back such painful memories for us as a family and Frazer's friends, especially those who were with him on that hot July day in 2021. A day eternally etched into our hearts. 'My heart goes out to Daniel's family and everyone who knew and loved him. 'I truly wish there were more comforting words I could say to ease the pain they're feeling. 'I hope they can find the strength to comfort and support each other through the pain and sadness during this incredibly sad time.' Frazer's friend, Ricky O'Neill, told BirminghamLive that the moment he heard the news it 'brought memories flooding back.' "We continue to hold Daniel and his family and friends in our prayers."
