Woman seeks INR 12 Cr alimony, BMW, luxury flat after 18-month marriage: SC says, "You're educated, earn yourself

In a strong and thought-provoking observation, the Supreme Court of India recently emphasized that financially qualified women should aim to be self-reliant rather than seeking large sums in interim maintenance from their spouses—especially when the marriage was short-lived. The statement came during the hearing of a high-profile alimony case. The woman involved, an IT professional with an MBA degree, had sought an expensive apartment in Mumbai, ₹12 crore as maintenance, and even a luxury BMW car—after just 18 months of marriage. Her demands raised eyebrows in the courtroom. Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud—while addressing her plea—highlighted her educational and professional background, pointing out that someone with her qualifications was more than capable of earning a living. "You're an IT person. You've done your MBA. You're in demand in cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad... Why don't you work?" he asked during the proceedings, as reported by NDTV. The CJI also commented on the property she demanded, and further said, 'But that house is in Kalpataru, one of the top builders. You also want a BMW after 18 months of marriage?' He questioned whether it was fair to expect such a high standard of living without making an effort to be financially independent. In response, the woman said that her husband is wealthy and had filed for annulment, citing mental health grounds, including schizophrenia. But the bench was clear, 'Either you get a flat free of all encumbrances, or nothing,' said the CJI, reiterating that a highly educated person choosing not to work of her own volition cannot expect endless support. Similar incidents in the past This isn't the first time Indian courts have taken a stand on the issue. In March 2025, the Delhi High Court stated that Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC)— which deals with maintenance— is meant to provide protection, not to reward unwillingness to work. The court added, 'A well-educated wife with the ability and past work experience should not remain idle solely to claim maintenance.' Similarly, in another landmark judgment in December 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that a wife cannot demand alimony simply to match the husband's wealth after divorce. The bench clearly said that a husband cannot be expected to maintain his ex-wife as per his improved financial status for life. The message from India's top courts is clear: Maintenance laws exist to support those who genuinely need it— not to enable luxury lifestyles when one is capable of self-sufficiency. In today's evolving world, education and professional skills are empowerment tools—and the courts are encouraging women to use them. Answer these 11 questions before marrying someone

Techie demands flat, Rs 12 cr maintenance, and BMW from rich husband after 18-month marriage; SC says earn yourself

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that qualified women should support themselves financially and not rely on interim maintenance from their husbands. The observation came during a hearing in an alimony case, where a woman had demanded a luxury apartment in Mumbai, Rs 12 crore as maintenance, and a BMW car—following just 18 months of marriage. According to reports, Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai strongly questioned the woman's demands, pointing out that she is well educated and can earn for herself. The CJI noted that the woman is an IT professional with an MBA degree, and pointed out that such qualifications make her employable in major tech hubs like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. 'You're an IT person. You've done your MBA. You're in demand... Why don't you work also?' he asked. "But that house is in Kalpataru... one of the good builders. You are an IT person. You have done your MBA. You are in demand in Bengaluru, Hyderabad... Why don't you work?" the Chief Justice was quoted as saying by the NDTV. "You had a marriage for just 18 months. And you also want a BMW?" CJI added. The woman, in response, claimed her husband is "very rich" and had filed for annulment of the marriage on the grounds that she is schizophrenic. 'Either you get a flat free of all encumbrances or nothing,' the CJI was quoted as saying by Bar and Bench. 'When you are highly educated and decide not to work out of your own volition…' Live Events This case echoes a similar ruling by the Delhi High Court in March this year. Justice Chandra Dhari Singh had stated on March 19 that the law does not support idleness. Interpreting Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC)—which provides for maintenance of wives, children, and parents—the judge emphasized that it aims to ensure fairness and protection, not to encourage non-working behavior among qualified individuals. In that verdict, the High Court said, 'A well-educated wife, with experience in a suitable gainful job, ought not to remain idle solely to gain maintenance from her husband. Therefore, interim maintenance is being discouraged in the case as this court can see potential in the petitioner to earn and make good of her education.' In another case in December 2024, The Supreme Court has ruled that a wife cannot seek alimony to equalize the wealth of her partner in the event of a divorce . 'It cannot be expected of the husband to maintain [his wife] as per his present status all his life. If the husband has moved ahead and is fortunately doing better in life post-separation, then asking him to always maintain the status of the wife as per his own changing status would be putting a burden on his personal progress,' a Supreme Court bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Pankaj Mithal said then.

Why don't you earn? Supreme Court on Rs 12 crore, Mumbai flat, BMW alimony demand

The Supreme Court on Tuesday pulled up a woman who demanded Rs 12 crore and a BMW car from her husband in alimony and observed that well-educated women should earn for themselves rather than depending on husband's money for their maintenance. Chief Justice of India BR Gavai was hearing an alimony case where a woman demanded a house in Mumbai and Rs 12 crore as maintenance in alimony after getting separated from her husband within 18 months of Justice of India BR Gavai, while hearing the alimony battle, said, 'Aap itni padi likhi hai. Aapko khudko mangna nahi chahiye aur khudko kama ke khana chahiye. (You are so educated. You should earn for yourself and shouldn't ask for it)."During the hearing, CJI Gavai questioned the scale of her demand, stating, 'Your marriage lasted only 18 months, and now you want a BMW too? One crore every month?' Highlighting the woman's qualifications, an MBA and experience as an IT expert, the Chief Justice remarked that she should not depend on alimony. 'If you are educated, you should not beg for yourself. You should earn and eat for yourself,' he woman countered that her husband is very wealthy and has even sought an annulment of the marriage by alleging she suffers from schizophrenia. 'Do I look like a schizophrenic?' she asked the advocate Madhavi Divan, appearing for the husband, argued that alimony cannot be claimed in such an extravagant manner. She pointed out that the woman was already living in a Mumbai flat with two parking spots and could generate income from it. She said, "She has to work also. Everything cannot be demanded like this."'The BMW she is dreaming of is 10 years old and has been discontinued,' Divan Gavai noted the husband's past income, Rs 2.5 crore salary and Rs 1 crore in bonuses during his employment, and directed both parties to submit complete financial documents. The bench also emphasised that the woman could not claim rights over property of her husband's woman alleged that the husband's actions led to her job loss and that he had filed a false FIR against her. To this, CJI Gavai assured, 'You file the FIR, we will cancel that too. We will direct that no party will initiate any criminal proceedings against each other.'As the hearing concluded, the court offered the woman two options — either accept a burden-free flat or Rs 4 crore and seek employment in IT hubs like Pune, Hyderabad, or Bengaluru. 'There is demand in IT centers,' said the CJI.- Ends
