Bennerley Viaduct visitor centre should open by autumn

BBC News2 days ago

A £1.1m visitor centre being built at a historic viaduct on the Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire border should be open this Autumn, volunteers behind the scheme have said.Bennerley Viaduct on the River Erewash has a new visitor centre under construction as well as an accessible ramp and nature reserve. When complete the visitor centre will include exhibition and educational spaces, a cafe, outdoor seating and bicycle parking. While an exact date for opening is "impossible" to set, Friends of Bennerley Viaduct chair Nick Tooley told the Local Democracy Reporting Service the group is "hoping" it will be open to visitors in October.
He said: "Bear with us, this project has lasted longer than it should have, there have been some technical issues we are hopefully getting around now. "We think we're on the final run and we do desperately hope we will have it open, with the help of the council, this October."He added the group had assembled a lot of archive material about the site. The centre is at the eastern end of the 60ft (20m) tall viaduct, a Grade II* listed bridge which stretches nearly a quarter of a mile (430m) over the River Erewash between Ilkeston and Awsworth. It is known as the Iron Giant. He said: "We've been speaking to people who remember going over the viaduct when it was open in the '60s, on holiday, on the trains."It actually means an awful lot to a lot of people."
'A lasting tribute'
The Victorian viaduct reopened to the public as a walkway and cycle path in 2022 after being closed for 54 years.Broxtowe Borough Council leader Milan Radulovic said he hoped the visitor centre would help attract tourists to the area.He said: "The wealth we enjoy and the standard of living were built on the backs of working-class people, and this area has a proud heritage of mining, steel work, and industrial work."This will be a lasting tribute and memorial to the sacrifices that they made for the freedoms and benefits we enjoy today."

Newlywed Dani Dyer reflects on THAT postcard meltdown which broke the then-record for highest number of complaints in Love Island history

Love Island series 12 is just around the corner, but on Sunday night, ITV2 pulled out all the stops with an anniversary special, celebrating 10 years of the show. Love Island: A Decade of Love featured chats and iconic moments from past winners and contestants, including newlywed, Dani Dyer. The reality star, 28, famously appeared on the show back in 2018 and went on to win with then-partner Jack Fincham, 32. But despite taking home the huge prize money, one of the moments Dani is most remembered for, is her reaction during season four's Casa Amor twist. The girls were given a video postcard showing what their partners were getting up to in the other villa, with Dani left inconsolable after she was shown a clip of Jack coming face to face with his ex-girlfriend Ellie Jones, implying there was something unsavoury afoot. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. As she watched the footage back, she was joined on the sofa by former contestant Samira Mighty, and reflected on her outburst saying: 'I went from zero to a thousand really quickly didn't I? 'I really really thought... I think it's cos his reaction was so like [gasps]'. Samira agreed saying the whole situation was 'crazy' before giving her friend a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder. Despite the drama and upset, Jack had actually barely spoken to Ellie, remaining loyal to Dani throughout. However the way the clips were shown 2,525 viewers complained, with the then Love Island host, the late Caroline Flack justifying the producers' actions by saying the point of the show is to 'test relationships.' Although Ofcom didn't investigate they confirmed that it broke records at the time for the highest number of complaints about a single issue in Love Island history. Earlier this year, appearing on Jessie Ware's podcast, Table Manners, Dani's dad, actor Danny Dyer admitted he was enraged by the scenes. He said: 'They did a really mean thing on it as well, where they sort of made it look like he was cheating on her. I was fuming. I was like I want numbers, I want f**** numbers. The clip broke records at the time for the highest number of complaints about a single issue in Love Island history and despite the drama, Dani and Jack went on to win the show, but ended up going their separate ways nine months later 'They pretended he was sleeping outside on a bed, and she was crying her eyes out, and I knew this was gonna happen to me. How could you do it to this poor child?' 'So, yeah, really hard to watch, but she came out. She really just went with it. She got a clothing range. She's such a beautiful kid. I'm so proud. I'm proud of all my babies.' Elsewhere in Love Island: A Decade of Love, Dani revealed that her new husband Jarrod Bowen's mother, voted for her and her ex Jack to win Love Island back when they were on it in 2018. After tying the knot with footballer Jarrod on Saturday, Dani confessed that her in-laws were among the thousands of fans who voted for her to take the crown. The mum-of-three was among a slew of past Islanders watching back clips of their time on the show. Sitting with pal Samira, Dani revealed that her now mother-in-law had watched her series and been a fan even back then. She told a shocked Samira: 'You know Jarrod's mum voted for us to win? So my mother-in-law voted for me and Jack to win Love Island.' It comes after Dani shared the heartwarming moment she danced with her dad at her recent lavish wedding. The emotional father-of-the-bride moment saw proud Danny slow dance with his eldest daughter, after walking her down the aisle. In a behind-the-scenes wedding reel shared to Instagram, Danny looked like he could burst with pride as he embraced daughter Dani on the dance floor. The 50 guests watched on as the father and daughter duo slow-danced under a dazzling chandelier. Calling it 'the best day of my entire life,' Dani told fans it was a memory she'd cherish always, adding: 'A day that I will want to re-live forever.'

Former glamour model who dated host of stars before settling down with Rose West's son reveals what it's like to be the serial killer's 'daughter in law'

A former glamour model has revealed what her life is like after having another child with Fred and Rose West 's son. Emma Bradley ignored concerns from her family to settle down with Stephen West, 51, and the pair most recently welcomed a baby girl named Eden. The former topless model is said to be so besotted with her fiancee Stephen that she is planning to marry him this August at the Celtic Manor hotel in Newport. Emma's family are believed to have raised the alarm over the fact that Stephen, who once said 'there's a bit of my dad in me', had spent jailtime for seven counts of underage sex with a 14-year-old girl. But Emma moved in with Stephen to a home in Abbeymead, Gloucester, just five miles away from the 'House of Horrors' at 25 Cromwell Street where his parents committed mass murder. She has also switched careers after modelling for magazines like Nuts and Zoo in her early 20s for her current job as a nurse at Gloucester Royal Hospital. After reports of Rose being in ill health in HMP New Hall, West Yorkshire, Emma told The Sun that neither she or Stephen were aware as they have cut ties with the serial killer. She said: 'Stephen doesn't want to say anything because his main priority is the little ones. He is adamant, at this time of his life he's got a young family to protect.' Emma's family are said to have raised the alarm over the fact Stephen (above) had spent jailtime for seven counts of underage sex with a 14-year-old girl Emma shares four girls with Stephen - the eldest being 17 years old - and says they 'don't know about the family history'. She believes they are 'old enough to be aware but too young to understand'. One inside source told the newspaper that Emma's family were 'uncomfortable' with her relationship to Stephen due to his family and 'where he comes from'. They also say that Stephen, a former builder, is currently unemployed and drives a Motability Scheme car due to one of his daughter's being disabled. Another source said Emma is only with Stephen because she 'wanted attention' and added that 'she has always been like that'. The former model reportedly dated ex-Arsenal striker Paul Merson and singer Dane Bowers before settling down. Fred West (above, left) died by suicide in 1995 while awaiting trial while Rose West (above, right) is in HMP New Hall, West Yorkshire, where she is spending a life sentence Stephen was jailed for nine months in December 2004 after having an eight month affair with the 14-year-old girl, during which time he arranged for her to have an abortion. He claimed his harrowing childhood led to psychological trauma which had been a factor in the relationship. The now-51-year-old has been married twice before his engagement to Emma and has eight children in total. He is also a grandfather. He grew up in the 'House of Horrors' and cut all ties with his mother and 1999, saying 20 years later it was 'important that I did that'. Rose had blamed Stephen for her and Fred's the horrific campaign of rape, torture and murder - which included their killing of his older sister Heather - and said it was his fault that she had ended up behind bars. Stephen added: 'She rang me in 1999 with hate, blaming me for everything. She said I should have died when I was born and that I was a disgrace to the family. 'You don't need enemies when you've got family like that.' At 14 years old, his father Fred told him to dig a hole in his garden that would be used for a fish pond. But it was to be used for his 16-year-old sister's grave. The couple would often tell their other children they would 'end up under the patio like Heather' if they did not behave. Of Fred and Rose's 10 children, only seven are still alive today. Four of them are believed to have moved to other parts of the UK to begin new lives, away from the 'House of Horrors' - but three, including Stephen, have remained in Gloucester and live around ten minutes away from each other.
