Proposed landfill reclamation creates perception of ‘selling out' to China, says NGO
GEORGE TOWN : An NGO has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to reject outright the proposed 70-acre reclamation project at the Jelutong landfill, arguing among others that it creates the perception of 'selling out' to China.
In a meeting with residents of the Karpal Singh Drive area today, Protect Karpal Singh Drive action committee (ProtectKarpal) chairman AD Chandrasekaran called for the matter to be discussed in the state assembly.
'The DAP-led Penang government and its role in the (ruling) federal coalition risk severe backlash as this arrangement feeds directly into long-standing public concerns about foreign influence.
'If the project is approved, it would confirm critics' accusations against DAP's ethnic Chinese leadership of prioritising China's interests over Malaysian sovereignty, public health and environmental protection.
'Transferring this strategic location to a company directly controlled by the Chinese government raises serious national security implications that cannot be overlooked.
'The state and federal governments must demonstrate their commitment to protecting Malaysian interests,' the NGO also said in a statement.
At the centre of the controversy is a land-for-works arrangement involving China Railway Engineering Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd (CRECM), a unit of the China Railway Group.
PLB Engineering Bhd's joint development agreement with the Penang government and Penang Development Corporation grants PLB 75% of the 90-acre dumpsite and 70% of any additional reclaimed land in exchange for landfill rehabilitation.
A memorandum of understanding between PLB and CRECM also allows the China entity to fund and execute RM1.01 billion of rehabilitation work in return for 90% of PLB's entitled land.
Chandrasekaran said under the project, continuous construction and recycling machinery noise is projected to exceed the threshold of 65dB(A) during the day and 60dB(A) at night, thus disrupting sleep, impairing cognition and lowering the quality of life for thousands of residents in the area.
He added that the four-year recycling, reclamation and subsequent 20-year development plan would choke local traffic, displace small businesses along Karpal Singh Drive and erode the area's appeal as a recreational and dining precinct.
Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, who was present at the meeting, said he would bring the matter up with Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow and Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim.

For the Malaysian ringgit, a significant near-term risk remains the ongoing trade talks with the US. As Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz recently confirmed, negotiations are intensifying to reduce an impending 25% US import tariff to below 20% before the August 1 deadline. A 'no-deal' outcome from these discussions could exert considerable downward pressure on the ringgit. Given the data-heavy week and the politically sensitive trade negotiations, currency analysts expect elevated volatility for the USD/MYR pair, anticipating it to trade within the 4.20–4.25 range. Over 100 Chinese enterprises target Zambia's premier show to boost business
LUSAKA, July 25 (Xinhua) -- About 100 Chinese companies are expected to exhibit at the 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show to boost business ties, the Zambia Chinese Association (ZCA) revealed on Friday. The enterprises will showcase their products and services under the Chinese Pavilion organized by the ZCA, during the event scheduled to run from July 30 to August 4 in Lusaka, the Zambian capital. This year's show will be themed "Adapting to Climate Change." ZCA General Secretary Wang Chunyan said the delegation will include about 80 enterprises already operating in Zambia, along with around 20 companies from China's Jiangxi Province. "It is a great platform to support China-Zambia economic cooperation and help Chinese companies grow," Wang said. She noted that the association has participated under the Chinese Pavilion for the past three years, a move that has yielded positive results for participating companies and strengthened business cooperation between China and Zambia. Bernard Moonga, president of the Agricultural and Commercial Cooperative Society of Zambia Limited, the organizer of the event, commended the ZCA for its sponsorship. According to Moonga, China is among the countries with the largest exhibitors at this year's show. Cambodia PM agrees to ceasefire proposed by Anwar
PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has agreed to the ceasefire proposal with Thailand suggested by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a Facebook post today, Manet said he agreed to the ceasefire because Cambodia did not initiate the fighting. "The key to resolving the current armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia is the genuine willingness of the Thai side to accept a ceasefire, which is the first step towards finding further solutions between the two countries," Manet said in his posting. Manet clarified that there was unclear reporting by various international media regarding the proposed ceasefire talks initiated by Anwar, the current Asean chair. Manet said he only agreed to the ceasefire after hearing from Anwar that Thailand's acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, agreed to peace talks. But regrettably, the Thai side changed their position on the issue, he said in his posting. "However, it is regrettable that just over an hour later, the Thai side informed that they had reversed their position from agreeing to the ceasefire," said Manet. Anwar said he spoke to both prime ministers on resolving the ongoing conflict on Thursday. The border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand escalated after soldiers from both sides engaged in a clash on Thursday morning along the Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear areas.
