Proposed landfill reclamation creates perception of ‘selling out' to China, says NGO

GEORGE TOWN : An NGO has urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to reject outright the proposed 70-acre reclamation project at the Jelutong landfill, arguing among others that it creates the perception of 'selling out' to China.
In a meeting with residents of the Karpal Singh Drive area today, Protect Karpal Singh Drive action committee (ProtectKarpal) chairman AD Chandrasekaran called for the matter to be discussed in the state assembly.
'The DAP-led Penang government and its role in the (ruling) federal coalition risk severe backlash as this arrangement feeds directly into long-standing public concerns about foreign influence.
'If the project is approved, it would confirm critics' accusations against DAP's ethnic Chinese leadership of prioritising China's interests over Malaysian sovereignty, public health and environmental protection.
'Transferring this strategic location to a company directly controlled by the Chinese government raises serious national security implications that cannot be overlooked.
'The state and federal governments must demonstrate their commitment to protecting Malaysian interests,' the NGO also said in a statement.
At the centre of the controversy is a land-for-works arrangement involving China Railway Engineering Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd (CRECM), a unit of the China Railway Group.
PLB Engineering Bhd's joint development agreement with the Penang government and Penang Development Corporation grants PLB 75% of the 90-acre dumpsite and 70% of any additional reclaimed land in exchange for landfill rehabilitation.
A memorandum of understanding between PLB and CRECM also allows the China entity to fund and execute RM1.01 billion of rehabilitation work in return for 90% of PLB's entitled land.
Chandrasekaran said under the project, continuous construction and recycling machinery noise is projected to exceed the threshold of 65dB(A) during the day and 60dB(A) at night, thus disrupting sleep, impairing cognition and lowering the quality of life for thousands of residents in the area.
He added that the four-year recycling, reclamation and subsequent 20-year development plan would choke local traffic, displace small businesses along Karpal Singh Drive and erode the area's appeal as a recreational and dining precinct.
Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, who was present at the meeting, said he would bring the matter up with Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow and Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim.

Social media is as a major contributor to the flex culture,' says Assoc Prof Chinnasamy, who is a political and social media analyst at the university's communication and media studies faculty. Prof Dr Sara says social media platforms are saturated with content creators pushing new trends, selling must-have items, and flaunting luxury hauls. She adds that social media platforms often fuel money dysmorphia by promoting unrealistic financial comparisons, especially among impressionable youths. 'For younger users, who are still forming their financial identities, this constant exposure can be especially damaging. Seeing peers or influencers their age seemingly thriving financially can lead to feelings of inadequacy or failure. 'The curated nature of social media can hide the reality behind the scenes – credit card debt, brand sponsorships, and staged content. Yet the emotional impact is real.' According to her, social media platforms are saturated with content creators pushing new trends, selling must-have items, and flaunting luxury hauls. 'And that's where money dysmorphia comes in. The onslaught of these videos may leave some feeling financially inadequate and pressured to recreate these lifestyles. 'The consumerism and neverending comparison traps can lead to anxiety, overspending, and growing fears around financial stability.' She reminds young people that influencer lifestyles often don't reflect reality. 'Unfortunately, many individuals are ensnared by this charm, striving to project an extravagant image to friends, often at the expense of financial feasibility. This involves indulging in pricey dining experiences and acquiring designer items, constructing a facade that doesn't necessarily align with their financial truth.' This trend, she warns, often leads youth to unintentionally accumulate debt in an effort to maintain a certain image. A major driver of this is the growing sense of obligation to uphold a particular lifestyle, resulting in heightened expenditure. 'The products and lifestyles influencers showcase are often sponsored or gifted by brands, who also pay them for endorsements. It's important to remember that what we see online isn't always the full picture – especially as we navigate our own finances.'

Feature: Chinese-built hydropower projects foster talent development in Cote d'Ivoire
by Xinhua writers Sun Yi, Zhang Jian ABIDJAN, June 7 (Xinhua) -- As the rainy season settles over southwestern Cote d'Ivoire, the Sassandra River swells with renewed vigor. In the early morning mist, workers in uniforms and hard hats move with purpose through the Gribo-Popoli Hydroelectric Power Plant, inspecting spillways, monitoring water levels, and checking equipment. Among them is 32-year-old Bassirou Konate, a quality inspector who began his career nearly a decade ago. "When I first joined the Chinese-built hydropower project, I could barely read the blueprints," Konate recalled. "But a Chinese mentor was assigned to me. Step by step, he taught me everything." Konate began his career in 2016 at the Soubre Hydroelectric Power Plant, a project also built by the Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina). Since then, he has contributed to several major infrastructure initiatives and become a key member of the team building the Gribo-Popoli hydropower plant. "What I learned in school was theory," he said. "It was these projects that gave me hands-on experience. Now, I can support my family. I see a future not only for myself but for my community." Situated on one of Cote d'Ivoire's major rivers, the Gribo-Popoli station is part of a series of hydropower projects. The Sassandra River, with its abundant flow and favorable elevation gradients, holds vast potential for renewable energy. After completing the Soubre Hydroelectric Power Plant in 2017, PowerChina saw all three generating units at Gribo-Popoli come online by November 2024, unlocking even more hydropower capacity for the country. Yet, the energy these projects generate extends beyond electricity -- it is also empowering the growth of local talent. Dozens of Ivorian workers who began their careers at Soubre, like Konate, have since stepped into critical roles at Gribo-Popoli as quality inspectors, technicians, and supervisors. Their growing expertise is powering a new chapter in national infrastructure, one driven not just by machines, but by the skilled hands of local professionals. Hou Bing, chief engineer of the Gribo-Popoli Hydroelectric Power Plant, said the project created roughly 2,000 direct jobs during its construction phase and supported an additional 1,000 through related industries. "These projects are more than worksites. They are schools, places where Ivorian workers gain skill and confidence," Hou noted. "Knowledge is passed on along with the trust between our peoples. Together, we are building not only dams but bridges of friendship." Yao Michel N'Guessan's story mirrors that of Konate. Fresh out of school when he joined the Soubre project, N'Guessan began with little more than textbook knowledge. "Chinese engineers taught me how to install and maintain electrical systems," he said. Through on-the-job training, he steadily mastered the complexities of construction. Today, he leads a construction team at Gribo-Popoli. "What I gained from my Chinese mentors wasn't just skills," he said. "They taught me discipline, responsibility, and precision. We're not just workers anymore. We're nation-builders." As night falls, lights flicker on across the Gribo-Popoli Hydroelectric Power Plant, casting a warm glow over the Sassandra River.
