Ukraine's Operation Spider Web has rewritten the rules of combat. Many think drones have become even more important than fighter jets. But this is just one piece of new-age warfare which bridges the gap between reality and fiction.

A dogfight is an aerial battle between fighter aircraft conducted at close range. Now, dogfights have reached space too where satellites fight like fighter jets.

Identifying the satellites involved in the reported military exercise in space, a US military spokesperson confirmed that the 'dogfights' took place in 2024. The officer added that there were five satellites involved with three of them Shiyan-24C experimental satellites while the remaining two were experimental spacecraft, the Shijian-605 A and B.
Two months later, in May, it was reported that India too practised a sort of dogfight in space. India quietly pulled off a historic space manoeuvre of its own -- one that married sophisticated scientific finesse with nuanced strategic signalling. On its
SPADEX
(Space Docking Experiment) mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully executed a high-speed satellite rendezvous in space, showcasing not only technical capability but future preparedness in the new frontier of orbital defence.
The SPADEX mission was first initiated to develop autonomous docking and undocking of two satellites, the manoeuvres which are the backbone of long-duration space missions, space station activities and servicing satellites. When the main mission was accomplished, ISRO engineers observed that the two satellites had almost 50% of fuel left, owing to accurate launch calibration and cautious fuel management. This created the possibility for an unintended but ambitious second phase: testing high-speed coordinated manoeuvres in orbit.
The two satellites were manoeuvred into synchronised, high-speed contact at orbital speeds of 28,800 kmph -- approximately 28 times the speed of a commercial airliner. Flying at such velocities, even the slightest miscalculation can result in disastrous consequences, and hence, this was an accomplishment of gigantic technical sophistication. Similar to fighter jets' aerial combat training, the satellites gradually closed in on each other under controlled conditions, pushing the boundaries of orbital control, real-time communication, and autonomous control systems. Although no weapons were used, the exercise replicates the manoeuvring accuracy that would be required in future space wars.
In 2019, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
made a special announcement that India had successfully tested its first anti-satellite missile system, code-named 'Mission Shakti'. "India has entered its name as an elite space power. An anti-satellite weapon ASAT successfully targeted a live satellite on a low Earth orbit," PM Modi said. He also stated that shooting down a LEO satellite is a rare achievement and was completed successfully within three minutes of launch.
India is only the fourth country after the US, Russia and China to have such a space warfare capability. Though it lags the three countries in this domain by far, it is making rapid progress. It is working on a "military space doctrine" that will be brought out in a few months, amid China continuing to develop weapons - direct ascent anti-satellite missiles, co-orbital satellites and electronic warfare - to contest or deny access to space.
Space warfare: Fiction becomes reality
Space warfare has evolved from a theoretical concept, and the stuff found in science fiction, into a critical component of modern military strategy. As of 2025, nations like the United States, Russia, China, and India have developed sophisticated capabilities to leverage, defend, and contest space assets.
Space warfare encompasses military strategies and operations conducted in or through outer space. It involves three key parts: space control, to ensure the freedom of operation in space for one's own forces while denying adversaries the same; space denial, to disrupt or destroy an adversary's space assets to degrade their military capabilities; and space exploitation, to utilize space-based assets for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and communication.
Key domains of space warfare include orbital warfare, engaging in actions to destroy or disable satellites; cyber operations, targeting space-based communication and control systems; electronic warfare, jamming or spoofing satellite signals; and kinetic operations, which means physical destruction of space assets using missiles or other projectiles.
America's 'Golden Dome' is the next frontier in space warfare
America's proposed 'Golden Dome' marks a dramatic shift in space warfare. Projected to cost $175 billion, the system aims to create a space-based missile defense shield that can detect, track and intercept missiles -- including nuclear ones -- before they reach US soil. If implemented, it would become the world's first active combat infrastructure deployed in orbit, fundamentally altering the nature of space warfare.
Unlike earlier space systems that were passive -- satellites for communication, navigation or surveillance -- the
Golden Dome
envisions satellites equipped with sensors, interceptors and potentially directed-energy weapons such as lasers. These platforms would neutralize threats in their boost or mid-course phases, forming a constant orbital shield over the US and its allies.
Supporters argue this is the next logical step in deterrence, especially in an age of hypersonic missiles and unpredictable adversaries. However, the plan has triggered intense concern globally, with rivals such as Russia and China warning that it could dangerously destabilize strategic balance. The most serious worry is that the Golden Dome undermines the principle of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD), a cornerstone of nuclear deterrence. If the US can reliably intercept retaliatory missile strikes, it might be perceived as having a first-strike advantage -- a perception that could provoke an arms race.
Russia has responded with sharp criticism, calling the plan a 'dangerous fantasy' that could dismantle existing arms control agreements. Moscow has accelerated the development of hypersonic weapons like the Avangard system, designed to bypass missile defenses. Similarly, China sees the Golden Dome as a direct challenge to its strategic deterrent and is likely to expand its own space and nuclear forces. Beijing has already invested heavily in anti-satellite weapons, maneuverable co-orbital satellites, and electronic warfare systems targeting space assets.
In an increasingly militarized orbital environment, India too is striving to increase its offensive and defensive capabilities in space.

OpenAI's policies prohibit use of its popular AI chatbot and models to assist with fraud, scams or cyberattacks. The company regularly suspends ChatGPT accounts it says are in breach of its rules. The release of ChatGPT to the public in late 2022 ushered in a wave of investments from companies willing to bet on a technology that is changing the way people do research, learn and work, though its growing capabilities also raise concerns about their weaponization for fraud, influence operations and other illicit activities. OpenAI said in a letter to the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy in March that AI needs common-sense rules to shield users and that it was committed to preventing authoritarian regimes from using its models to amass power, threaten or coerce other states, carry out covert influence operations or malicious cyber activity. The recent arrest of a Chinese researcher and charges against another for smuggling a dangerous crop-killing fungus into the United States have brought renewed attention to the threat of agro-terrorism. At the heart of the case is Fusarium graminearum, a potent plant pathogen capable of devastating cereal crops and disrupting national food supplies. US officials allege the two researchers, one of whom worked at a University of Michigan lab, intended to conduct unauthorized research on the fungus—raising fears of deliberate attempts to compromise American agriculture. The incident, unfolding amid heightened US-China tensions and trade disputes, highlights how scientific collaboration can be exploited to target a country's most vulnerable infrastructure: its food system. What is agro-terrorism? Agro-terrorism is the intentional use of biological agents—such as plant pathogens, pests, or contaminants—to attack a country's agricultural infrastructure. It targets food production systems with the aim of causing economic devastation, food insecurity, and public panic. The fungus not only decimates yields but also produces a toxin called vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol), making the grain unsafe for human and animal consumption. According to the US Department of Agriculture, this disease causes over $1 billion in crop losses annually in the United States alone. Vomitoxin can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever in livestock and people, further amplifying its public health impact. The case: Chinese researchers charged Two Chinese nationals, Yunqing Jian (33) and Zunyong Liu (34), have been charged by US federal prosecutors with smuggling Fusarium graminearum into the United States—without proper permits and under false pretenses. Jian, who works at the University of Michigan, is currently in US custody. Liu, her boyfriend and a researcher in China, is believed to be in China and remains at large. According to the FBI, Liu carried baggies of the fungus into the US via the Detroit airport and initially lied about them. He later admitted he intended to use them for research in a Michigan lab. Jian allegedly received Chinese government funding for similar research and has expressed loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). US Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. described the smuggling as a 'national security' concern, emphasizing the CCP ties and the threat to America's food supply. Why this matters Although Fusarium graminearum already exists in the US, the unauthorised import of foreign strains is dangerous. Variants may be more virulent, pesticide-resistant, or adapted to new climates—making them harder to contain. Bringing them in without the proper biosecurity controls risks new outbreaks or genetic mutations that existing defenses can't manage. FBI Director Kash Patel warned that this could have "grave consequences... putting American lives and our economy at serious risk." He emphasised that this case illustrates how state-backed actors may attempt to infiltrate US institutions and compromise critical sectors like food security. Wider context: US-China tensions This incident comes amid deteriorating relations between Washington and Beijing. US-China trade talks stall after Geneva tariff truce Trade negotiations between the United States and China have stalled, just weeks after both sides agreed in Geneva to a 90-day cooling-off period by reducing tariffs. The agreement had seen China cut tariffs on American goods from 125% to 10%, while the U.S. proposed lowering its tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%. However, progress has faltered amid renewed tensions. U.S. President Donald Trump reignited the dispute on May 30, accusing China of 'totally violating' the Geneva deal, though he did not provide specifics. 'So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!' he wrote on social media. Tesla is being eaten alive by Chinese rivals it inspired
The biggest story swirling around Tesla Inc. right now concerns Chief Executive Elon Musk 's sudden, if unsurprising, break with a leader who is as calm and unassuming as he is, President Donald Trump . The important story concerns what is happening far from these shores: China. Shipments from Tesla's Shanghai factory fell by 15per cent in May compared with a year before, according to preliminary data from China's Passenger Car Association. That marks eight straight months of declining output from Tesla's single biggest electric vehicle factory, accounting for around 40per cent of its global capacity. These figures don't break out which of those EVs get sold in China or get exported from there, but this trend is not Tesla's friend. Through April, its share of China's battery EV market had fallen by more than half over the past four years, according to data compiled by New AutoMotive, a UK-based research firm. The numbers also suggest deteriorating economics. On a simple, calendar-day basis, they imply Shanghai factory utilization of 76per cent in May. That isn't terrible, but it's down significantly from last May. So far this year, excluding the month of February when Tesla was retooling for the refreshed Model Y, implied utilization is running 10 points lower than the same period in 2024. Speaking of that updated Model Y, it isn't a good sign that Tesla has already offered incentives like zero-percent financing in China. Taken together, lower capacity utilization, implying higher fixed costs per vehicle, and higher discounts, meaning less net revenue, point to a continuing problem with what was all too apparent in Tesla's first quarter results: Crushed profit margins in its main business. Unlike Tesla's weaker EV sales in other important markets such as California and Europe, the slide in China has nothing to do with Musk's politics. Tesla's reputation within China remains high, viewed as an essential catalyst in revolutionizing the quality and scale of the country's auto sector. Except that 'catalyst' isn't quite the right word, because the beauty of catalysts is that they spark transformations but don't get used up in the process. In this case, it would be more accurate to call Tesla a reactant, because the domestic Chinese EV industry spurred on by its example is now eating it alive. While Tesla's share of China's battery EV sales is down to about 10per cent so far this year, that drops to 5.8per cent when you include other so-called 'new energy vehicles' such as plug-in hybrids, according to figures compiled by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Competitors including BYD Co. Ltd., which holds about 27per cent of China's NEV market, are now delivering the sort of excitement that Tesla used to in terms of looks, range and driver assistance features — and at lower prices. Xiaomi Corp., the smartphone maker, is in the process of launching the YU7, a high-tech, fast-charging electric SUV that resembles a Porsche or Ferrari but is perhaps best pictured as a Model Y-seeking missile. In an alternate dimension, China would serve as a hothouse laboratory for Tesla to hone world beating, profitable EVs that might even be exported to its home market. In the dimension we've got, Musk has seemingly lost his ambition to develop brand new, affordable EVs that can compete across the world. Tesla's last genuinely new model, the Cybertruck, is certainly big but only about as 'beautiful' as the Trump tax bill that Musk now openly derides as an 'abomination.' While Tesla sits apart from the legacy automakers in the US, Germany and Japan in many respects — certainly in terms of valuation — it has, like them, seen its position in China eroded rapidly. And regardless of Musk's latest posts on X, he worked hard to secure the election of a president and Congressional majority intent on crushing EV sales in the US. With the end of the second quarter approaching, and the sales figures emanating from China and Europe portending another set of weak earnings, it is perhaps little wonder that this narrative is crowded out by all manner of other things. Musk, who ditched Tesla's public relations team and routinely denounces the media as 'propaganda' has nonetheless plunged into a media blitz of late, and has now whipped up a new political intrigue. Is the break with Trump real? My litmus test: watch out if @elonmusk posts a picture of a taco. Plus, of course, we have the imminent launch of Tesla's self-driving cars in Austin. Whatever they actually turn out to be, with the always dubious narrative of Musk's White House job boosting Tesla's fortunes now played out, those robotaxis constitute the main pillar supporting Tesla's triple-digit earnings multiple. Certainly, that number has nothing to do with what's happening in the biggest EV market on the planet.
