OPAZ signs 7 pacts to launch Economic Zone at Dhahirah
Signed by Dr Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Chairman of OPAZ, and contracting companies, the agreements include a RO22.3mn construction contract for main roads and a surface water drainage system. The 24-month contract was awarded to an Omani-Saudi consortium.
OPAZ also signed a strategic MoU with Sohar International Bank to provide financial solutions for investors. The agreement includes preferential offers for businesses, capital structuring services and access to OPAZ's investor platform.
Two service level agreements were signed with Al Watanyiah United Engineering (Oman) and Dar al Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), engaging them to prepare architectural, structural and infrastructure designs for investor projects in EZAD, provide technical advice and feasibility studies, and assist with approvals.
Additionally, three MoUs were signed with Sohar International Bank, Poly Products and Naseem Ibra Company, expressing investment interest in the zone.

'In cooperation with the Economic Cities and Special Zones Authority of Saudi Arabia, OPAZ has completed the master plan for EZAD,' Zadjali said. The first phase of development covers 20sqkm, including an urgent implementation area of 7.5sqkm within the total allocated 388sqkm.
Zadjali added that the long-term vision for the zone is to become a centre for advanced industrial sectors, with particular focus on clean energy as a core driver of development. 'It will also serve as a logistics hub featuring an inland port and include a residential area designed with focus on environmental sustainability and community well-being, offering modern living amenities and essential services for both residents and workers.'
The RO22.3mn road and drainage contract includes construction of 17km of roads, solar street lighting, storm water channels and a 6.3km diversion channel for wadi protection. The scope of work includes box culverts, road reconstruction and safety infrastructure such as roundabouts and signage.
The agreement mandates that at least RO1.23mn of the works be awarded to SMEs and requires an Omanisation rate of at least 30%, including in technical roles, to promote local workforce development.

South Batinah mango farms strengthen Oman's food security
Barka – Mango cultivation and production projects in the wilayats of Barka and Musanaah in South Batinah governorate are vital initiatives that bolster food security, increase local production, provide promising investment opportunities, and reduce reliance on imports. These projects also have the potential for future export to foreign markets, which enhances the competitiveness of Omani products in regional and global markets. Over 80 projects within the food security portfolio are being implemented in the governorate. Their products vary, and they span vast areas across the governorate's wilayats. The projects are under the continuous supervision and follow-up of the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in South Batinah Governorate. This is to overcome difficulties and address challenges that may arise during the implementation stages and ensure work proceeds according to the planned schedules. These projects aim to plant over 35,000 mango seedlings of various varieties on an area of 373 acres in the wilayats of Barka and Musanaah. The planting will be carried out in separate batches to ensure the highest success rates. The expected production capacity upon project completion and the start of commercial production will reach 3,382 tons annually. Eng. Amer Humood Al Shebli, Director General of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in South Al Batinah Governorate, stated: 'The mango projects in Barka and Musanaah come within the framework of the Ministry's efforts to diversify agricultural production and enhance the national food security system. This is achieved by utilizing natural resources, adopting modern farming methods that ensure sustainable and high-quality production, and making the best use of available resources.' He also said that in the next phase, the Ministry is working to expand the introduction of new mango varieties known for their high quality and excellent productivity. It will also focus on research and development programs to improve production and enhance the efficiency of farmers and workers in this field through continuous training. The Ministry is also placing great importance on opening diverse marketing channels, whether in local markets or through agricultural exhibitions and events, to ensure the long-term continuity and viability of these projects.

SMART FARMING TRANSFORMS OMAN
Oman's agricultural sector is undergoing a significant transformation through innovation and technology, in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is spearheading efforts to enhance food security and environmental sustainability by promoting smart farming, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and modern irrigation techniques. The Ministry supports small-scale innovative projects through technical and financial assistance, while funding initiatives and awareness programmes are provided via the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund and digital platforms. Collaboration with universities, research centres and international organisations such as FAO and AOAD further strengthens these efforts. Emphasis is being placed on integrating technology in agriculture, including IoT-based smart farms, disease prediction and crop improvement. Legislation such as the Intellectual Property Protection Law encourages innovators to register advancements in agricultural technologies, biofertilisers and irrigation systems. Recent research from Sultan Qaboos University highlights the potential of the Harmal plant (Peganum harmala) in combating crop diseases. Supervised by Buthaina bint Harith al Busaidyah and Dhia bint Ibrahim al Rashdiyah, the study found that Harmal extracts inhibit harmful fungi, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. The research team developed a practical solution derived from Harmal that demonstrates high efficacy against pathogenic fungi, offering an environmentally safe option for Omani farmers. Innovative companies are also contributing to sustainable farming solutions. Hawra bint Rashid al Omraniyah from the University of Al Sharqiyah showcased AZDARA, a company producing organic pesticides and fertilisers in biodegradable smart soil packs. These packs nourish the soil as they decompose and include natural products derived from animal shampoo, providing safe pest control while improving animal health. Omar bin Fathil al Daree from UTAS Ibri introduced the Smart Agriculture Cultivator (SAG 1), a sensor-equipped device that analyses soil conditions in real time, measuring moisture, pH, temperature and nutrient levels. The system alerts users to issues such as salinity or nutrient deficiencies and removes impurities like stones, weeds and plastics automatically, improving both efficiency and soil health. The Ministry stressed that investing in agricultural innovation is a strategic necessity to secure a food-safe future amidst global challenges like climate change, resource scarcity and population growth. By encouraging private-sector partnerships, promoting research and supporting startup initiatives, Oman is building a resilient and sustainable agricultural framework.
