From Rolex watches to an ancient Gita, gold biscuits to ivory coffee tables—the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) official 'Toshakhana' records analysed by News18 open a rare window into the glittering and often surprising world of diplomatic gifting
From bottles of imported wine, a snake plush (toy), exclusive sarees to ivory crafted tables, gold-diamond-crystal jewelleries, models of temples, Bhagavad Gita and high-end Rolex watches with other collectors' items, the Toshakhana—India's official repository of diplomatic gifts—has items that always intrigue the masses.
The value of a single gift item, as received, may range from a mere Rs 200 to over Rs 50 to 60 lakh. Complying with the policy and administrative decision, the government takes a call on what will stay as 'submitted' and what is to be 'returned' to the recipient.
The official lists, available with the ministry, show the range and scale of these offerings, formally submitted by ministers and diplomats to the repository in accordance with government rules.
Among the standout names, the prime minister, minister of external affairs and the foreign secretary across governments emerge as the dignitaries with the highest number of declared gifts, followed by several other Indian envoys and senior officials. The entries range from modest—like a small leather pouch worth Rs 200 or a Jacob's Creek wine worth Rs 800 or Red Label Whiskey of Rs 1,000—to opulent Rs 25-40 lakh Rolex watches, gold biscuits, royal-mint gold coins, ivory-inlaid tables, and other high-value curios handed over by foreign guests and groups.
However, the most intriguing entries in the MEA's Toshakhana log are a bundle of high-value items received from anonymous givers in 2018. The gifts include gold biscuits of 20 grams each, silver coins, Hindu scriptures and wooden globes. This list also includes a fascinating Bhagavad Gita model worth Rs 36,000, a peacock figurine, and a wooden Veena replica to the high offices—all without traceable origins.
While the gifting culture is steeped in protocol and diplomacy, the records reveal an eclectic collection that would not look out of place in a high-end auction. These gifts are assessed and often retained or auctioned depending on their value, yet the list itself offers a fascinating peek into the soft power circuits of international relations.

NMC to deploy teams of ex-military men to curb littering, garbage burning

Nashik: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to recruit 72 ex-servicemen to be deployed across the city's six divisions to tackle issues like littering, garbage burning, and use of banned plastics. Twelve teams with six ex-military men each are to be set up for NMC's six divisions. The teams will impose monetary fines on people indulging in littering, garbage burning and spitting. Even those not segregating waste at source and putting up illegal hoardings and banners will also be penalised. The civic body has already decided on the amount of fines for different violations, besides putting out an advertisement for the appointment of ex-military men for this purpose. The selected ex-military men are to be appointed on an honorarium basis. NMC plans to pay their honorarium through the amount collected from fines. NMC's general body recently gave its approval to the proposal of the civic administration to deploy ex-military men to take monetary action against erring people in the city. "The squads will impose a fine of Rs 10,000 each if any resident is found littering in public places, while those burning garbage, plastics or rubber in the open will be fined Rs 5,000 each. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2 BHKs starts at ₹ 72.6 Lakh | No Floor rise | Zero PLC Mahindra Happinest Tathawade Get Quote Undo A fine of Rs 25,000 will be imposed on people burning garbage on a large scale," an official said. Mahto and his daughter, a Class 10 student, were given a cheque of Rs 1.20 lakh, and a separate cheque of Rs 21,000 for their contribution in forest promotion and conservation on the occasion of 76th Van Mahotsav in Ranchi. 2 coaches of the Muzaffarpur-Sabarmati Jan Sadharan Express derailed near Kanpur

Kanpur, Aug 1(PTI) Two coaches of the Muzaffarpur-Sabarmati Jan Sadharan Express derailed near the Panki area between Kanpur and Tundla on Friday, railways said. The incident, which occurred on the busy Delhi-Howrah route, caused a major disruption to train services. According to railway chief public relations officer Shashi Kant Tripathi, the sixth and seventh coaches from the engine came off the tracks with a loud jolt. 'The train was travelling at a low speed at the time, which averted a major tragedy," he said. A few passengers sustained minor injuries and were given first aid at the scene, he added. Passengers who witnessed the incident reported feeling the coaches being suddenly tilted, causing panic. Technical teams and a medical van were immediately dispatched to the site to begin rescue and restoration operations. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Dinesh Tripathi deployed a team of police force police to supervise the rescue efforts and control the crowd. The derailment disrupted train movement on the Delhi-Howrah route, forcing the North Central Railway (NCR) to divert multiple trains. Normal train movement is expected to resume following the completion of track clearance and a thorough safety inspection, Tripathi said. The railways has formed a committee to investigate the cause of the derailment. PTI COR CDN VN VN view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
