New Delhi [India] June 17 (ANI): The Ministry of Labour & Employment-led welfare schemes have extended support to over 50 lakh unorganised workers across India, particularly in the Beedi, Cine, and Mining sectors, the Ministry of Labour & Employment said in a release.
"With a direct impact on over 50 lakh workers and their families, these schemes form a cornerstone of the government's inclusive and compassionate labour welfare strategy," the Ministry added.
The Labour Welfare Organisation (LWO), functioning under DGLW, administers these schemes across the country through a well-coordinated network of 18 Welfare Commissioners, who oversee implementation at the regional level.
The LWO's goal is to provide social protection, health services, financial assistance for education, and housing support to workers often located in remote and underserved regions.
One of the key components of the welfare framework is the Education Assistance Scheme, which provides annual scholarships ranging from ₹ 1,000 to ₹ 25,000 for the wards of Beedi, Cine, and non-coal mine workers.
The scheme, implemented via the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), receives over one lakh applications every year, with direct benefit transfer (DBT) ensuring transparent and timely disbursement.
Healthcare support under the Health Scheme includes outpatient services through a national network of dispensaries, as well as reimbursement for specialised treatments for critical illnesses such as heart disease, kidney transplantation, cancer, tuberculosis, and minor surgeries.
The financial assistance ranges from ₹ 30,000 for minor surgeries to ₹ 7.5 lakh for cancer treatment, ensuring access to life-saving healthcare for low-income workers.
Although the Revised Integrated Housing Scheme (RIHS) introduced in 2016 has now been sunset and merged with Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), the Ministry continues to disburse pending instalments to eligible beneficiaries until 31 March 2024.
The Ministry said that these targeted schemes not only improve the quality of life and social security of unorganised sector workers but also underscore the government's vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas in action. (ANI)

Earlier, PM Modi held brief pull-aside meetings with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis. Before leaving for the summit, PM Modi had said he would be discussing important global issues and emphasise the priorities of the Global South as he meets world leaders at the G7 Summit. This is PM Modi's first visit to Canada in a decade. The high-profile summit, which began June 16, marks PM Modi's sixth consecutive participation in the G7, and is part of his ongoing three-nation tour, which began in Cyprus. According to India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the summit will feature exchanges between leaders on key global challenges, including energy security, technological innovation, and emerging areas like artificial intelligence and quantum technologies. PM Modi's arrival in Canada follows an invitation from PM Carney, who took office in March after Justin Trudeau's resignation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The visit is seen as a step toward mending strained ties after tensions over the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India had recalled its diplomats and accused Trudeau government of encouraging pro-Khalistani activity, while Canada alleged Indian involvement in Nijjar's death. Diplomatic contacts have since resumed, with both sides exploring a reset. The MEA called India and Canada 'vibrant democracies' and termed Modi-Carney talks an 'important opportunity' to rebuild trust. Trade, immigration, and diaspora ties are also key. Bilateral goods trade stood at $8.6 billion in 2024. Canada hosts 1.8 million people of Indian origin, including nearly one million NRIs. Maruti's Manesar railway siding to cut 65,000 truck trips annually
By Shailesh Yadav Manesar (Haryana) [India], June 17 (ANI): Maruti Suzuki's new railway siding at its Manesar plant will eliminate approximately 65,000 truck trips annually, translating to 232 fewer truck journeys per day based on 280 working days, Senior Executive Director, Corporate Affairs, Rahul Bharti announced on Tuesday. Speaking to ANI at the Manesar facility, Bharti highlighted that the railway terminal will dispatch seven popular models including Celerio, WagonR, SPresso, Dzire, Brezza, Ertiga and XL6, while export vehicles will be transported to Pipavav and Mundra ports through the new facility. The Manesar railway siding represents India's largest automobile GatiShakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal, capable of dispatching 450,000 vehicles annually at full capacity. Spread across 46 acres within the Manesar facility, the terminal features a fully electrified 8.2-kilometer corridor with four full-length tracks plus one engine escape track, a two-floor station building, and comprehensive support infrastructure. The project, executed through a joint venture with Haryana Orbital Rail Corporation Ltd (HORCL) at a total cost of Rs 1,170.91 crore, marks the company's second such facility following the Gujarat plant's inaugural railway siding. Maruti Suzuki's green logistics transformation has been remarkable since FY 2014-15, with railway dispatches growing nearly eight-fold from 5 per cent to 24.3 per cent of total vehicle dispatches in FY 2024-25. The company dispatched a record 5.18 lakh vehicles through railways last fiscal year, contributing to a cumulative 25 lakh vehicles transported via rail since the initiative began. Currently operating over 40 flexi-deck rakes with 300-vehicle capacity each, the automaker serves more than 600 cities across India through 21 distribution hubs. The environmental impact of this logistics strategy is substantial, with the Manesar facility alone expected to avoid 175,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions and save 60 million litres of fuel annually at full capacity. As Maruti Suzuki prepares to scale production to 4 million units by FY 2030-31, the company plans to increase railway usage to approximately 35 per cent of total dispatches over the next five to six years, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable transportation and reduced carbon footprint in the automotive sector.
