Costa Smeralda's trip reinforces Oman as a global cruise destination
Muscat: Khimji Ramdas Shipping LLC (KR Shipping), an integrated shipping and multimodal logistics service provider in Oman, successfully facilitated the maiden season of Costa Smeralda in the Sultanate, reinforcing its role as a key player in the region's cruise industry.
The vessel, a flagship of the Costa fleet, made its first visit to Oman on December 19, 2024, after circumnavigating Africa from the Mediterranean before commencing its scheduled operations in the Arabian Gulf.
Throughout the season, Costa Smeralda operated one-week round-trip cruises from Dubai, with scheduled stops in Muscat (Oman), Doha (Qatar), and Abu Dhabi (UAE).
On March 3, 2025, the vessel departed from Muscat, embarking on a 37-day voyage back to the Mediterranean. En-route to its final destination in Genoa, Italy, scheduled for April 7, 2025, the ship will make calls in Mauritius, South Africa, Namibia, the Canary Islands, Morocco, Spain, and France (Corsica).
KR Shipping played an instrumental role in managing the ship's operations, ensuring efficient port services and smooth logistical support for each call at Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat.

Costa Smeralda is the largest ship ever commissioned by Costa Crociere and a true celebration of Italian design, culture, and craftsmanship. As part of the Carnival Corporation & plc, the world's largest cruise group, the ship has set new standards in maritime innovation.
Built in 2019 by shipbuilder Meyer Turku in Finland, Costa Smeralda is the first LNG-powered cruise ship in the Costa Cruises fleet, underscoring the company's commitment to sustainable cruising.
With a capacity for approximately 6,600 passengers and 1,678 crew members, the ship spans 323.6 metres in length and 37.2 metres in width.
It offers 1,550 cabins, a variety of entertainment events, two swimming pools, a health club, and 11 diverse restaurants, ensuring a luxurious and immersive experience for its guests.

Coach Inzaghi to leave Inter Milan
ROME: Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi is leaving after four years by "mutual agreement", the club announced on Tuesday, as Italian media reported he was moving to Saudi Arabia. "The club and Simone Inzaghi are parting ways. This is the decision taken by mutual agreement," Inter said in a statement. Both Inter and Inzaghi said the decision had been made at a meeting involving the coach and club President Giuseppe Marotta on Tuesday afternoon. The parting came just days after Saturday's 5-0 thumping by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. Talk had already been swirling about his exit, and last month Inzaghi played down rumours about a two-year deal with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal worth 50 million euros. Italian media said Tuesday this reported had been confirmed. Inzaghi took over Inter in 2021 and had a contract until 2026. The 49-year-old guided the club to one Serie A title — Inter's 20th — and two Italian Cups. He led the team to two Champions League finals in the past three seasons but lost both. On track to repeat the treble heroics of 2010 just a few weeks ago, Inter ended the season trophyless after falling away in each competition. In its statement, the club said Inzaghi's management was "characterised by great passion, accompanied by professionalism and dedication". His trophies had "brought the club back to the top of Italian and European football", it said. Marotta thanked him "for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today's discussion, which led to the common decision to separate our paths". "Only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day, can we have a frank dialogue like the one that happened today," he said. Ancient tombs unearthed along Oman-UAE railway route
Suhar – An Omani-Italian archaeological team found 28 ancient tombs during an excavation in Suhar along the route of the planned Oman-UAE railway line. The excavation carried out in Sohar Free Zone was jointly conducted by Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and Sapienza University of Rome as part of a salvage operation aimed at protecting heritage sites potentially affected by the railway connecting Suhar to Abu Dhabi. 'We identified around 28 graves in the route of the railway,' said Francesco Caputo, an archaeologist from Sapienza University. 'One of the tombs contained a substantial collection of human bones. We also recovered a variety of grave goods, including stone and shell beads, bronze rings and bangles, and fragments of ancient glass vessels.' The artefacts provide insight into burial practices and social structures of ancient communities that once inhabited the region, adding to growing evidence of continuous settlement in Oman since prehistoric times. Ismail Salim al Mutrafi, Head of Archaeological Survey Department at the ministry, noted the collaborative nature of the project. 'A large number of ministry staff are actively involved in this excavation, working alongside our Italian counterparts,' he said. 'This effort is not just about discovery – it's about skills transfer and building national capacity in the field of archaeology.' According to the ministry, it is currently working with archaeological teams at 68 sites across the sultanate. Findings contribute to efforts to protect Oman's cultural heritage and support its tourism sector. 'The ministry is committed to protecting archaeological sites and maximising the value of these resources as key elements of our tourism product,' said Mutrafi. 'Findings from excavations like this one help enrich the collections of National Museum and other regional museums under the ministry's umbrella.' He also emphasised the role of such artefacts in promoting international cultural exchange, citing their inclusion in exhibitions abroad. 'This is a reminder that beneath our modern infrastructure lies an ancient world waiting to be rediscovered,' Mutrafi added. 'Each find is a story, a memory and a connection to people who walked this land long before us.'
