Often undervalued or overlooked in favor of technical expertise, soft skills are increasingly essential in every profession. From entry-level careers to the C-suite, mastering soft skills opens up leadership opportunities.
Soft skills influence how you lead teams. According to a LinkedIn Global Talent Trends report, 89% of recruiters say that when a hire doesn't work out, it typically comes down to a lack of soft skills. Additionally, employers increasingly look for emotional intelligence and communication over technical credentials alone.
As the CEO of Tilting Futures, Erin Lewellen is accustomed to change and the skills it takes to lead through it. Formerly known as Global Citizen Year, the organization rebranded and expanded its mission in 2022 to create immersive learning experiences that prepare young people to become globally engaged leaders. Under Lewellen's leadership, Tilting Futures has focused not only on what students learn but also on how they grow, particularly through the development of soft skills.
'Every single high-stakes business situation I can think of absolutely requires adept deployment of soft skills,' Lewellen states.
She emphasizes three areas as critical for today's up-and-coming leaders:

It's not about constantly compromising; it's about engaging in constructive conversations even when opinions differ. Leaders who master this skill are able to challenge assumptions, test ideas and arrive at better decisions without damaging relationships.
Lewellen notes that disagreeing well is more than just managing conflict. It's about showing respect while challenging ideas. 'When a leader can disagree with her team in a way that shows fundamental respect for the team and for the goal at hand, all ships rise,' she explains. This skill, rooted in emotional intelligence and trust, is increasingly valued by employers who recognize that innovation depends on diverse perspectives and open dialogue.

Adaptability is key to both personal resilience and organizational success. This trait involves the willingness to shift approaches and remain open to new ideas. This skill set is another trait Lewellen sees as non-negotiable. 'We don't live in a linear, slow-paced world,' she says. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tilting Futures had to pivot dramatically. Rather than closing its doors, the team launched new programming that met the moment—growing its reach and impact. 'Had we become too attached to our original, single story, we would have missed opportunity in ways we hadn't yet imagined.'
How to develop it:
Strong decision-making requires critical thinking. Leaders who make sound decisions can solve complex problems, balance risks and move forward with clarity. Importantly, they also know when to involve others and when to lead decisively.
Decision-making, often overlooked as a soft skill, is the thread that ties it all together. Lewellen believes well-informed decisions come from unpacking problems strategically and understanding stakeholders. 'This skill encompasses so many others like empathy, creativity and collaboration,' she reflects.
How to develop it:
Lewellen practices these skills herself and coaches her team to do the same. She fosters a culture where leaders are encouraged to ask difficult questions, share context freely and let ideas develop over time. She urges, 'Put the idea on the table and discuss—and disagree, please disagree—so we make the best possible decision together.'

Agencies were told that the 5% of funding in reserves "are unlikely to be released" on top of earlier budget cuts. (Getty Images) The Braun administration has directed agencies to withhold 5% of their funds from specific budget line items — rather than allowing department heads to identify areas for reserves. This is in addition to appropriation cuts already enacted in the state budget passed in April. In previous years, the Office of Budget and Management traditionally directed agencies to reserve funds but gave agency leaders more discretion in how to achieve the savings. The change appears to stem from a General Assembly addition to the 2025 budget, rather than Gov. Mike Braun. 'For the first time in recent memory, nearly every agency across all three branches of government finds itself entering the first year of a new biennium with fewer resources than it had the year before,' reads a letter from OMB director Chad Ranney dated June 2. 'At the same time, the costs for the state's major programs continue to increase at unsustainable rates. Overcoming these challenges will require each of us to place a renewed focus on fiscal responsibility as well as collective commitment to budget discipline.' The letter goes on to say that 'the amounts withheld are unlikely to be released,' meaning that agencies might need to operate with essentially a 10% budget cut. Ranney asks agencies to identify areas that could be targets for reversions, or mid-year transfers from fund to fund. Such moves were popular prior to COVID-19, when the federal government sent billions to states to avert economic disaster. That state is projected to maintain between $2.25-2.5 billion in reserves throughout the biennium. Budget line items run the gamut from the governor's office and residence to the Indiana State Fair Commission. Even agencies that got a slim budget boost in the 2025 budget — the Department of Correction and the Department of Child Services — were directed to reserve funds related to salaries and general operating funds. Braun defends IU trustee removals, appointees Those agencies were allocated scarce budget dollars due to a shortfall of funds for local jails holding state inmates and increased child caseloads. The state's higher education institutions also weren't spared. Indiana University, Purdue University, Indiana State University, the University of Southern Indiana, Ball State University and Vincennes University all will have funds held back, including specific cuts to satellite campuses. That's on top of lawmakers cutting their appropriations in the two-year budget beginning July 1. The directive follows a grim revenue forecast earlier this year that projected the state would have $2 billion less to spend in the next two-year budget, prompting lawmakers to institute 5% agency cuts largely across the board. The budget bill included another provision, instructing the state's budget director 'to withhold not less than 5% of any appropriation to a state agency to be used for salaries or other wages for state agency employees or general operating expenses of the state agency.' Earlier in May, Cramer said: 'Now, not that long ago, we dropped in on a monster Home Depot store management meeting in Vegas where we heard about some great ideas for spring gardening season, which by the way, kicks into overdrive this weekend. Unfortunately, these big weeks for lawn and garden have been overshadowed by stubbornly high interest rates and no rate cuts from the Fed, not to mention tariff worries. Now I've watched this stock since it came public, and there are plenty of times that Home Depot doesn't actually march to the tune of interest rates, but instead is levered to repair and renovation. As so many people are stuck in their homes, I'm willing to trade up because that would force them to give up that low mortgage rate that they may have gotten during the COVID period. Now we own the despot for the Charitable Trust, and while I'm not expecting a blowout by any means, I have to tell you I like it long term, and it's down 2% for the year, well, off its highs… Home Depot stock is a great one to own because, like Walmart, these guys have the scale to cope with the tariffs that are going to be put on so many foreign-made goods that they sell at Home Depot. The little guys we know, they don't have that kind of flexibility.' Overall, HD ranks 10th on our list of stocks that Jim Cramer discusses.
