KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- DAP National Deputy Chairman Nga Kor Ming has welcomed the Cabinet's decision to guarantee matriculation programme placements for all students who achieved 10As and above in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, as announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) yesterday.
He said the decision reflects the MADANI Government's commitment towards meritocracy, equal opportunity, appreciation of local talents and the empowerment of young Malaysians in pursuing quality education.
'This inclusive policy, which applies regardless of race or background, recognises the outstanding efforts of our top-performing students.
'The government is sending a clear message that academic excellence will be rewarded fairly and consistently and every Malaysian is being appreciated,' Nga said in a statement today.
The Housing and Local Government Minister added that the decision aligns with the commitment made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year and strengthens public confidence in the national education system.
He expressed that the new policy ensures that no outstanding student is left behind and respects the government's assurance that the existing Bumiputera quota system for matriculation will remain intact, ensuring a balanced and inclusive approach.
'DAP remains committed to promoting policies that celebrate academic achievement while also advancing social equity. We believe that education is the greatest empowerment and tool towards building a fairer, more progressive and educated nation,' he said.
Yesterday, MOE issued a statement saying all students who obtained 10As and above in last year's SPM examination and applied for the Matriculation Programme will be offered places, regardless of race or background.
MOE said the decision was agreed upon at the Cabinet Meeting held earlier in the day.

Kota MADANI To Offer Savings Of Up To RM1,000 A Month For Civil Servants

PUTRAJAYA, June 26 (Bernama) -- The Kota MADANI smart city project here is expected to help civil servants save up to RM1,000 a month in living costs, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. She said that through this project, civil servants would be able to reside in government quarters at minimal cost, with salary deduction for housing totalling only around RM400 per month. 'Their children's schools are nearby and accessible on foot. They can go to and return from school safely as the area is equipped with an advanced security system. 'Fuel costs can also be saved. So they can set aside money for the future,' she said in her speech at the launch of the Kota MADANI development project in Putrajaya's Precinct 19, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today. Dr Zaliha said the government is developing the MADANI concept grounded in reality, not merely as a slogan. Responding to claims that the project would replace Putrajaya, Dr Zaliha clarified that Kota MADANI covers only 0.8 per cent of the entire area of Putrajaya and is a small part of a larger urban planning initiative. 'Putrajaya was built as a symbol of modern and planned administrative capital. Kota MADANI is a continuation and realisation of this vision, with emphasis on a liveable, inclusive, and secure ecosystem,' she said. Kota MADANI is designed as a 'walkable' development with short distances between buildings, integrated with MADANI and CHASE principles — namely integrated development, pedestrian-friendly environments, artificial intelligence (AI) technology, and sustainable and inclusive growth. According to Dr Zaliha, 10,000 units of quarters for civil servants will be built under the project to address the acute shortage currently faced.

PM Anwar Calls For Consistent Grassroot Engagement, Not Pre-election Showmanship

PUTRAJAYA, June 26 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reminded all elected representatives to consistently engage with the public, rather than only making appearances ahead of elections. Speaking at the launch of the Kota MADANI smart city project in Precinct 19 here today, Anwar said the practice of meeting people on the ground should be a continuous year-round effort, not a pre-election showmanship. 'I don't want them to just show up two months before the election, and start kissing babies, walking into local warungs and stalls, making house visits. I want to put an end to that culture,' he said. Also present were Federal Territories Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. Anwar said the Malaysia MADANI approach is not a political gimmick, but a genuine focus on addressing the needs and livelihoods of the majority, especially low- and middle-income groups. 'That's why, every Friday, I make it a point to eat at a local warung or stall for 15 to 20 minutes before Friday prayers. 'It's the only way to see for the (level of) cleanliness, accessibility, and conditions that directly affect 80 per cent of the country's population,' he explained. The Prime Minister also reiterated that Kuala Lumpur no longer needs more iconic skyscrapers, given the presence of landmarks such as the Merdeka 118 Tower and the Petronas Twin Towers. 'Enough is enough. If you ask me, what we need now are clean and decent eateries,' he said.

PM Anwar urges consistent public engagement over election showmanship

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today emphasised the need for elected representatives to maintain continuous engagement with the public instead of only appearing before elections. Speaking at the Kota MADANI smart city project launch in Precinct 19, Anwar criticised the culture of politicians making sudden appearances in communities just ahead of polls. 'I don't want them to just show up two months before the election, and start kissing babies, walking into local warungs and stalls, making house visits. I want to put an end to that culture,' he said. Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Chief Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar were also present. Anwar stressed that the Malaysia MADANI approach is not a political gimmick but a genuine effort to improve the lives of low- and middle-income groups. He shared his personal practice of visiting local warungs weekly to assess cleanliness and accessibility, highlighting their importance for 80 per cent of Malaysians. 'That's why, every Friday, I make it a point to eat at a local warung or stall for 15 to 20 minutes before Friday prayers,' he said. The Prime Minister also questioned the focus on skyscrapers like Merdeka 118 and Petronas Twin Towers while neglecting small eateries. 'Enough is enough. If you ask me, what we need now are clean and decent eateries,' he said, noting that warungs serve the majority, unlike upscale restaurants catering to only 20 per cent.
